sounds hot.
pics?
preferably redhead. - isuisorisuaint, on 07/08/2008, -0/+40http://regmedia.co.uk/2007/06/06/asus_eeepc_2.jpg
- MattBD, on 07/07/2008, -0/+30I think that most people are just happy to use whatever's installed and they'll go for whatever's cheaper. After all, what does a housewife want out of her Eee PC that Linux can't do? She won't want to use CS3 or play Crysis. And if it's already set up it's no harder to use than Windows or OS X.
- WCL23, on 07/08/2008, -9/+35In soviet russia, the kernel compiles YOU!
- armo, on 07/08/2008, -1/+26or virtualise.
- YodaJones, on 07/07/2008, -4/+26As if Ziff-Davis has a clue. They have had their heads up their asses for almost a decade.
- Wonderama, on 07/08/2008, -0/+17My wife is a complete computer novice; she's on Ubuntu. I have a buddy who's one of those guys who knows enough about computers to be dangerous. He's constantly attracting viruses, malware, installing apps that bog down his machine with services, etc. I got tired of supporting him and he finally let me switch him to Ubuntu when every single application icon on his desktop turn into an unchangeable pic of a naked woman (his wife and 13 yr old daughter were none too pleased.)
Linux may be considered geeky, but it's a great way to protect novices from themselves. - wiresjr, on 07/07/2008, -2/+18Interesting. I'd have thought that, particularly in the case of the ASUS entries, going Linux would be more common for the geeks, as you get greater storage, and it's not that difficult to install XP on them afterwards.
The reason these are selling so well is probably largely due to the fact that sub-12" notebooks have always been prohibitively expensive. I'd have had such a thing last decade if I didn't think paying upwards of a grand was ridiculous. - BlackJackJester, on 07/08/2008, -7/+23If she's on the computer, she's not cooking or cleaning. Buried as inaccurate.
- sk11, on 07/08/2008, -0/+16It's actually for both.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -3/+18Developers Dual Boot.
- Hockey13, on 07/08/2008, -4/+16FTA: "Retailers and contract manufacturers '''IN TAIWAN''' say that novice PC users there, like students and housewives, tend to buy the Linux version of the Eee PC701, while geeks go for Windows XP."
One country, totally different culture. Taiwanese stats may not be indicative of worldwide trends. Sensationalist headline. Poorly presented. - Renian, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11Geeks get XP because then they can immediately set up a Linux dual-boot.
- fanboydcs, on 07/08/2008, -0/+10what? Linux is for Geeks, and can be extremely dumbed down so its great for novices.. like grandmothers and house wifes. The Eee Interface is very very simple, and anyone can pick it up and start using it. Geeks love linux because of its power and they love it because they can make it simple enough their grandma can use it.
Most true Geeks are into Unix, and are running some type of Unix variant on their machine, BSD, linux, osx, etc..
Most people that are learning stick with Windows since it allows them to get their feet wet, and allows them to play 99% of the games for PC. These people are either to green to try unix or they are not Geeky enough to care...
I know I will be dugg down for this post since there are alot of Windows users that think they are Geeks... - MattBD, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9Proof that anyone can use Linux if it's the right distro and it's preinstalled.
- JasonCox, on 07/08/2008, -6/+14If I had a wife I'd put her on Linux; if only so I didnt have to fix the computer every 5 #$@%ing minutes!!
- stretch611, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8Dude... Don't you know the RIAA is going to sue you for that copyrighted material. (And no, they don't care how old it is.)
- krinn, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8Asus just announced new pricing for the Eee PC. $399.99 for a 1024x600 8.9" display and 16GB SSD. Quite a usable computer for not a lot of money.
- neko, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8Games. On the Asus Eee PC.
- crownedgriffin, on 07/08/2008, -1/+8I'm not surprised. While Diggers are all pretending to use Linux (I know most of you don't!), the majority of people actually prefer Windows. It's what they are used to. "Housewives" don't even know what Linux is; they just get it because it's cheaper. Once they get it, they probably just think of it like the OS on their cell phones. It doesn't matter what it's called or how it works, just so long as it works.
- MRintheKeys, on 07/08/2008, -1/+8Yes, actually November 5th, 1955 Marty.
- nicko68, on 07/08/2008, -1/+8The Linux that is built into the Asus is very simplified though. Just a few tabs across the top of the screen, each with a page with a handful of big icons with things like "Web", "E-mail", etc.
Add to this a very easy recovery system in case something goes wrong (press F9 during boot, pick "Restore to Factory"... done).
Asus did a very good job of providing a simple, idiot-proof experience for basic browsing, e-mail, etc. - Greengoo, on 07/08/2008, -1/+7That's only because they don't have stovetop PC's yet.
- BlueSkyfish, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6Forget about stability or open source ideology. Just show off the spinning desktop cube. People will be buying Linux PCs by the dozen.
- PDF84, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6didnt know vacuum cleaners came with linux.
- stretch611, on 07/08/2008, -3/+8Many applications are available for linux. I can't think of one major application that is not available. A specific title may not work in linux, but there are many alternatives.
No Microsoft Office, but there is OpenOffice, and KOffice.
No Yahoo Messenger, but there is Pidgin and Kopete.
No Outlook, but there is Thunderbird and Evolution.
No Quicken, but there is GnuCash.
No Photoshop, but there is GIMP.
No Dreamweaver, but there is BlueFish.
No Internet Explorer, but there is Firefox, Opera, Konqueror, and Galleon.
There is definitely no shortage of desktop apps in linux. Even if there is one that you can't live without and you do not like the available alternatives just use Wine and chances are it will work. (Word and Adobe CS work with wine.) - dopplerdog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5I feel a little nostalgic for the old days. I'm a linux user since '92, when I downloaded the SLS distribution on a handful of floppies. Every year or so I used to look forward to installing a new distribution, and spending the next week or so "tinkering" with the source and adding s/w to make it do what I wanted, sometimes doing all-nighters.
I installed Ubuntu the other day... walked away from the PC, came back about 30 mins later... and found there wasn't anything further I wanted to add. Everything worked. :-(
l - dougle, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5Written on linux for windows, i bet Bill is bashing round on ubuntu these days
- jugglingjon, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Wait. Strike that. Reverse it.
- P373Y, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3windows doesent work. what world are you from.
- RonBurgundy76, on 07/08/2008, -4/+7Heh, you dumbasses. My wife uses CS3 quite often to touch up family photos and do other creative things with them and has been doing so for quite awhile. I would wager that she knows more about using CS3 than most of you wankers.
I know that MattBD was just being a little facetious, but get real. There are plenty of girls out there that can probably 'out-computer' a lot of you guys. And the real shocker: some of them are hot. So don't be hatin' just because you married a chick that doesn't know how to use a computer. - cros, on 07/08/2008, -4/+7"Housewives"? Please, what is this, 1955?
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Because there is still housewives. Even if they do still work during the day.
- nicko68, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Whoa, this is heavy.
- josephbloseph, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Isn't the reply button great?
- rockefeller2, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3What?!?!?
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Its easy for the housewife to set up a laptop on her bed, making it easier to video sex chat while hubby is at work..
- MattBD, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2OK, I should probably have said that a typical housewife won't want to play Crysis or use CS3, there are no doubt some who do. You get my point, though. The average non-technical user is happy to use whatever came on it.
- gkiltz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2And Vista for Microsoft!
Who is more deserving?
It's their turd! - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Sol.exe just isn't the same unless it's Microsoft's version.
- jay019, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2> Besides, these are housewives with wrinkles, liver spots and stretch marks. Unless you've spent a duration in prison, most guys with any dignity would pass them up even if they were single. In closing, ***** you.
Sorry to hear you have a hideous wife. Doesnt mean that all wives are as bad. - rockefeller2, on 07/08/2008, -2/+4NOOOOO!!!! Put an end to this!!!!!
- Greengoo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2I feel like I'm required to make a comment in response to the vacuum comment about how "Linux Sucks", but I can't really put forth the effort to string one together.
- wattersm, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2It's all about games. Yes, I'm aware that some will run in wine.
- silfiriel, on 07/08/2008, -3/+5so not true....
linux for housewives and their IT gigolos, XP for geeks - Aleksej, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Apparently that's currently more true for Taiwan than for Russia. The Walmart-like shopping network that sells EeePC seems to only be selling Windows XP ones (not sure). OTOH, maybe it is the same as in the U.S. — they are unfair (EeePC was almost 10000 roubles in the beginning. Now it is over 11 and there is a discount so it is near 9400) and are hiding stuff.
Yes, there is GNU/LinuxCenter and probably other retailers who sell EeePC with other OSes. Anything but Xandros is, of course, more expensive. - Giga, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Just so you know, & is ampersand, not @.
- 3leggedHorse, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2It is actually because they are white, which matches the rest of the kitchen appliances. ,
