- Dankoozy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Calvin Klein was a kernel developer?
- vfrex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22If you want to find a discussion of intelligence on this topic, just go ahead and take a look at yesterday's /. article.
- spindrift, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Versatile. Responsive. Stable. Free. Linux, Calvin Klein.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I suspect they mean an OS level scheduler for multitasking or task sharing, not a scheduling application, although that is based solely on the headline and description.
- UKsHaDoW, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15My GUI is unstable now? News to me.
- acidkore, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13But Ingo already stole all of CK's best stuff! It will be as if he never left!

And for the lazy, here is a link: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/10/2335217 - Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11+1 funny
Only on Digg would Slashdot be considered intelligent discussion. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7RTFA.
- polyGone, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Unstable? Are you high? I use XP for my school stuff, only because of 3DS Max and Flash, and it crashes constantly, is extremely slow, and the interface ***** up more often than not. I use Ubuntu FF on my slower older laptop and it runs perfectly. The only reason I use XP at all is because Adobe won't port to linux. Luckily Maya has, though, and hopefully 3DS soon.
- mikm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, because all the kerenel developers do the same thing at once. You want better wifi and graphics card drivers? Blame the hardware manufacturers or vote with your pocketbook and only buy hardware from manufacturers that give good Linux support (most Intel stuff does).
- cheeze_ballz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9what? batch files don't work any more in windows? when did that happen?
(that was sarcasm) - Langford, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I already thought my Linux system was pretty responsive. Altering a good thing makes me apprehensive, but the promise of more responsiveness is tempting.
- Wyzard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"For the love of god, stop dicking around on stuff like this which has no impact, which nobody except the geeks who wrote it care about. How about investing some time writing video or 802.11x drivers that don’t utterly suck?"
You mean like the Nouveau project that's building an open nVidia driver, or the new DeviceScape 802.11 stack that's also going into 2.6.23 alongside CFS?
You deride a new feature because you don't see a use for it -- though many others do -- and then berate a developer who's volunteering his time, for not working on what you want him to work on. What have you done that's constructive? - Hermmunster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I admire the folks that can make a great product better. Adding this capability to an already outstanding superior product is fantastic. I love the Linux industry.
- dystopianray, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This scheduler is not in 2.6.22, it will be in 2.6.23
- Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I dunno who CK is, but for some reason, I kinda feel sorry for him!
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ever heard of Monad? In fact Microsoft is releasing the next Server 2008 with an option to have only the CLI. I just made you crap in your pants didn't I?
- ostracize, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Model 1: I don't want to be just like everyone else...
Model 2: But I don't want to be different
Model 1: I just want to be...
Peter: What was the name of the bad guy from Tron? Man this is going to drive me nuts. - DangerCollie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4My first thought as well. Just switched over to Kubuntu and it's positively springy. I really like it. Updating is a breeze, many great tools.
I'm also with you on the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" feeling. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I hate to say this... but it should be buried for being inaccurate. That's not entirely true. Please refer to http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/10/2335217 if you want to know anything about the topic. Also... on the subject of windows. First of all this will be built into the kernel (hence out of the box) and second of all Linux doesn't suffer from the slow Windows death thanks to the registry and other junk that slowly strangles windows.
- vfrex, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7You mean that blue screen with crazy codes running across it is a GUI?
- mikm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1A new wifi stack that has WPA is in the 2.6.22 kernel. Of course, wifi card drivers will have to be changed to take advantage of it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1good for you
- stockjones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Is this 1981?
- shadowspawn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I thought it was from the video drivers. 3d apps work nicely, wonder if games (quake-type engines) can benefit from this? I'm ignorant about much of the linux core OS, btw, because I rarely broke it. 3d stuff, always breaking it, but no idea how it relates to the core.
- ericthegreat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wasn't the same thing said a few years ago about the scheduler that was added to the 2.6 kernel? I really didn't notice much of a difference from 2.4 to 2.6 on the desktop responsiveness.
- SuperFarStucker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Aside from extreme edge cases where the old scheduler performed poorly (which are few and far between, almost all are specifically crafted to demonstrate weaknesses in the current scheduler) the only difference you're likely to notice is through carefully crafted benchmarks. People who claim otherwise probably run gentoo and have the custom kernels which expose a billion knobs in kconfig for 'twiddling.' It truly is the equivalent to sticker derived horsepower.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You need to work on your Linux skills. Perhaps you are using a livecd... or you are working with generic 2D graphics drivers. Considering how fast windows pop currently (I couldn't time it), I believe the speed improvement will be negligible on anything but large apps (The Gimp, OOo, Google Earth, etc).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not really, the CFS just assigns equal CPU priorities to each task. It's vastly simpler than the previous scheduler.
- FKnight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And don't forget ... to a Pro-Linux person, "good Linux support' from hardware manufacturers means taking the work of their paid driver developers and giving the source away to everyone. God forbid Linux should have something basic like a unified driver model or hardware abstraction layer which other OS's seem to have figured out years ago.
- FKnight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Monad is called Powershell now. And as far as the "CLI only" option in Windows Server 2008 .. it's true that you can boot it to a command line --- unfortunately, it's a command line in a window on top of the GUI which just happens to not load Explorer.
- Monk22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah i just sit there all day and rotate through my awsome collection of pattern tiles, your such a loser. lmao
- Monk22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3i havent seen a bsod in years my friend maybe you just suck at windows
- maninblac1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Simple doesn't mean better.
- staan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I contribute to PEAR, and I'm a former Debian developer. What have you done?
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bad 2D drivers will screw you regardless, but for those of us with solid drivers there are some edge cases that the new scheduler should make a bit smoother. If you are having driver issues, I strongly suggest replacing your hardware - there's no reason to have hardware that doesn't run your software right.
- sloppychris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I haven't noticed this at all.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1WPA2 works pretty damn good with the current selection of Linux flavors. You don't even need to use the terminal for some. If your system is sluggish on a click-to-front... there is something vastly wrong with your Linux knowledge.
- ninja0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1linux can get faster?... :| news to me.
- Axed33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Intelligent? Maybe.
But it sure is funny. - strangelove42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0does it have sugar in it?
- FreedomSpanker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0nothing like pure speculation on something the scheduler "may" do
- beatryder, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I tried the new kernel. If you are using any kind of a laptop with wireless drivers that are not in the kernel, or using any video driver (such as nvidia) I would suggest waiting for updates before migrating to 2.6.22.1.
Just my 2cents - bincoder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0It would be nice if my linux would open a window in the blink of an eye the way windows always has.
I haven't seen one yet (linux) that is as 'fast' as linux is supposed to be compared to windows.
Best one i've tried opens a window after a less than 1 second delay, which is faster than 10 seconds like i've also seen in the past, but 'instantly' is still faster. - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You probably don't do much on windows beside changing the wallpaper.
- Wootery, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Not for me. I find Firefox in particular to be shamefully slow.
- bkool, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3"Completely Fair" is very misleading. The best schedulers should give priority to certain time sensitive tasks (UI responsiveness, etc). Everyone having "fair" (equal?) access would lead to so many problems.
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0ALL Linux desktops, and spontaneously.
