- Maynym, on 10/10/2007, -5/+239The real news here is not that Linux passed W98, but that anyone still uses W98.
- Kanna, on 10/10/2007, -13/+210So, Linux just won the OS special olympics?
- khoa1708, on 10/10/2007, -12/+168of course linux has more users than windows 98, who do you know that still uses 98? that's like saying linux has more users than DOS
- Arfie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+129The fact that people still use Windows ME makes me want to cry.
- crackah, on 10/10/2007, -6/+120ahaha, its like a penguin swimming past a sloth..
- ZephyrNinety, on 10/10/2007, -0/+95I think the word would be "surpasses", not bypasses.
- zervic, on 10/10/2007, -8/+102It also loox like 1280x1024 is gunning for 1024x768 and Latvia is coming up behind teh UK. Rawk.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -9/+76These stats don't mean much (for so many reasons... http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3687616 )
- apologeticus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+67It's very sad that someone is bragging about this. In other news, the Zune "bypasses" the eight-track...
- Salgat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+57Actually, 98 has had so much popularity that Microsoft stopped supporting 98 just last year(it was extended from 2004). You have to remember that many people have no idea how to install an operating system, and since many people have no reason to upgrade(why buy a new computer when your old one works for internet and word processor?), 98 has had decent retention thus far.
- theoallardyce, on 10/10/2007, -10/+62Congratulations, you've just surpassed a 10 year old piece of software.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+47Sorry, you're happy that Linux is used as much as a 10 year old OS? I use Linux and love it but this is nothing to be proud of, I thought the percentages were higher than this.
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43I just wanna say 'bypassed?'
- WraithTDK, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39Sadest. Brag. Ever.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32Only we can prevent forest fires.
- veriix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Lets party like it's 1999!!!
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29The fact that people ever used Windows ME makes me want to cry. Or that it was ever released. I'm glad I never so much as saw it. I switched to NT after about 6 months of Windows 95.
- odevans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24Not until it beats Windows ME.
- glibby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Must have meant 'surpass'.
- Stunto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23"Overtaken" would have confused me so much less.
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25While I hope it will, it will probably not happen before Vista is an old operating system, just like 98 is today. I think Vista will get a huge boost when SP1 is released. Many more will probably switch to Vista then.
- neveroffline, on 10/10/2007, -6/+27Did you just digg this or did you actually read the statistics? I wouldn't boast 1.34% vs 1.34% as anything that special (esp since 98 isn't supported anymore), but I would like to mention Vistas been out since January 2007 with a 0% userbase and it's already trippled Linux - and they god paid for it. God this digger is an idiot.
- CYR1X, on 10/10/2007, -9/+29Woot they are now beating a completely obselete OS!!!!! GO LINUX!!!!!1
... - nullx42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21First thing I thought when I read the title "well a ***** dos bootdisk can "bypass" any security win98 has in place."
Lurn2Title - pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21I love Linux, but this doesn't necessarily mean that more people are running Linux. Anyone who's been using Windows 98 this long is probably not upgrading, so Windows 98 computers are probably being replaced with Windows Vista computers as they break.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -10/+27Many older folk or even some school environments still use Windows 98.
- beercosoftware, on 10/10/2007, -13/+30I seriously doubt these stats are accurate. They do not account for server use and shared office use, where many Linux desktops can be rolled out to a single office branch and used on a single router. 50 machines could show the same user agent and IP but be 50 unique desks running Linux Desktop computers. For that huge reason it is flawed. The biggest growing sector for Linux roll outs is in the Corporate office environment, and that is not being gaged here.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23Market share does not necessarily equal quality. Sometimes there's a correlation, but often not.
- Koskun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Once it beats ME it gets it's own short bus.
- AmirRaminfar, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20equal is not bypass.
- TTLKurtis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Welcome to the English language. I think I'll "bypass" on reading this story.
- Teej, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Vicujozo, the thing I find most shocking is "4. 800x600 8.34%"
Oh dear... :(
I forgot that most people with computers really have no idea how to use them. - ashura001, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I have a friend in my home town that swears by ME. Nobody can convince him that upgrading to 2000 or XP would be a wise decision. I'm still trying to figure out why he thinks ME is the most stable version of Windows.
- g3r4, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19While I agree that he was a complete retard, I'm sick of the stupid "sheep" *****...
- Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Actually what I find most shocking is that IE6 still holding nearly 50% of the market, especially since IE7 has been around for a while now. IE6 is probably the worst browser ever, with as much security as a man bending over in a prison pulling his butt open.
- JeroenVernooij, on 10/10/2007, -15/+29Welcome to my blocklist, douchebag
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1450 machines could show the same user agent and IP but be 50 unique desks running Windows Desktop computers. For that huge reason your argument is irrelevant. Especially because *this* scenario is significantly more likely.
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Actually, let me revise that statement. Linux does not yet have more users than DOS when you add the ME users into the mix.
- t0ny, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15One of my friends mom loves ME she wont using anything but, she hates linux, xp and the list goes on. Funny thing is she has no clue what Linux is just hates it.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I'll second this, while I know how to install Linux and all, my parents and family do not, nor would they welcome a change from 98 or XP to Ubuntu or anything else. For that reason one of our desktop computers still runs 98, granted I've reinstalled it recently, and it is fairly stable for the use it's put through. Some people don't like change, even within the same OS. If I were to stick Vista on our desktop computers they'd kill me because it's different. If I were to put XP, same thing. Linux? Same thing.
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Let's not forget that the OS with the highest number of active installs worldwide, is Symbian.
- xrenjrvt, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17It's sad that so many Vista users are anticipating SP1 already. If I was going to pay for an OS, I'd expect more.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11No... It's mozilla 1.8. There is no Firefox 1.8. Firefox and Mozilla are different browsers.
Woops - aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13When IE6 came out, it was a very good browser...the only problem is it is 8 years old and STILL has 50% of the market share.
- Azimuth1, on 10/28/2007, -1/+12This comment just screams, "Hey guys! Make fun of me!"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13You say it like you can get Windows 2000 for free.
- prammy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I used to do a lot of onsite tech support for home users. There are a LOT of Win98 and Win98SE uses out there.
- YuriSakazaki, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14What the *****?
NTFS?
A completely retooled UI?
The NT Kernel?
Incredibly higher stability (98 used to crash like a *****)?
Seriously, what improvements has Linux made that Windows hasn't? Is this even a serious post? - MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Otherwise XP should not be in use at all.
- Smills, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18That is a very ignorant statement. All the operating systems have different target audiences, as much as they might like to hope differently. Generally really knowledgeable people use Linux (at least as far as the knowledge of computers is concerned) because it is a very stable operating system and is very modifiable. And, of course, open source. Windows is used by people who just want their computer to work without them having a hassle to get it to do anything. Windows is also mainly used by gamers and people that need application support over stability. And lastly, Macs are used by people that like to look at pretty shiny icons and have even less complexity than windows, or "I own a mac therefore I = cool" :)
