- Kbiscu1t, on 07/05/2009, -1/+23It's about time! The last iPods that could even be slightly modified were the 1g Nanos and the 5.5g Videos.
- davzie, on 07/05/2009, -1/+18I only liked Rockbox because I could change the pitch / tempo of a song, otherwise it was quite difficult to use sometimes. But now I have an iPod Classic so I can't do much with it :(
- Khast, on 07/05/2009, -1/+16Oh goodie!!! A Fanboy Troll.
- Kbiscu1t, on 07/05/2009, -0/+15Absolutely not. With earlier iPods, iPod Linux allowed users to install endless amounts of apps and emulators to run on their iPods. It also allowed the playing of videos on iPod Nanos which did not support video playing.
This new breakthrough is not just an advancement for iPod Linux, but the entire iPod tweaking and modding community. - XeroXenith, on 07/05/2009, -0/+11Also FLAC :)
- TabControl, on 07/05/2009, -4/+14Does that mean Quake is coming to my iPod?
- Kbiscu1t, on 07/05/2009, -0/+10Actually, that "little progress" isn't little at all - It's the first code ever to be injected into a 2nd/3rd/4th Gen Nano ever. So it WAS a dead project, until now.
- fragMasterFlash, on 07/05/2009, -0/+9And meanwhile the Zune is STILL uncracked.
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7If someone cared to do it for the shuffle, there could be support for additional formats like Ogg Vorbis. I suppose FLAC as well, but lossless audio probably isn't that desirable on a 2GB player.
- adamroach, on 07/06/2009, -1/+7Nobody needs it. They want it. So they're doing it.
- LocalDocal, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6In all fairness, the iPod development community is probably a lot larger and more active than that of the PSP's. Aside from that, you sort of put down the PSP unreasonably.
I've looked up the Linux project on the PSP and, according to installation readme, all you have to do is put it on the memory card and run. There doesn't appear to be any need for additional materials. Secondly, you forget that the PSP community also managed to get Windows running.
If anything, I would say that the PSP surpassed the iPod in running other OSes. - AdmiralAcbar, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6Sadly, there isn't a big enough market :(
- Kbiscu1t, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5In the future, if development continues, then yes.
- ashadocat, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5there are many apps. all linux apps for one but I doubt it has the hardware for most of them, but I'll just quote features.
* An iPod-like user interface
* Video playback with sound
* Support for AAC, MP3 and basic OGG playback (4G & 5G Music Player Daemon malfunctions, but can be fixed).
* Many games, including TuxChess, Bluecube (Tetris clone), Chopper, StepMania (a Dance Dance Revolution clone) and more.[1]
* Recording through audio jack at much higher quality than Apple's firmware
* Ability to play the games Doom and Doom II (and presumably any Doom Total Conversion; Chex Quest for instance)
* Color scheme support
* Ability to run many emulators, such as iBoy (Nintendo Game Boy Emulator), iNES (Nintendo Entertainment System Emulator), iDarcNES (port of the multiple system emulator DarcNES), iMAME (port of Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), and iGPSP (Game Boy Advance emulator).

- PawFox, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4Sweet! this could lead onto the project of cracking the iPod Classic (6G).
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4The term jailbreaking is used for iPhones and iPod touches, which are quite different from the other iPods.
- antdude, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4How would that work on a Shuffle? :D
- ISellSigals, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4I use Rockbox on my ipod video and it is the *****. You can also play Doom on it :)
- waspbr, on 07/05/2009, -1/+4RTFA
- HappyScrappy, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3Shouldn't be long now.
- Kbiscu1t, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3The point isn't just to run linux, but to be able to run things like Doom and emulators. The excitement isn't in porting Linux to the newer iPods itself, but more of how you can run an operating system that supports more than just playing music and watching videos, which is what the iPhone and iPod Touch already have.
- BHSPitMonkey, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3I'm not sure running Windows 95 in a remarkably slow port of Bochs really qualifies as getting Windows to "run". It would likely be trivial to do the same thing on iPodLinux, with even less speed and desktop coverage.
In general, the ARM development community thrives a lot more than the MIPS community ever did. - tech42er, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Apple locked down the firmware on the newer iPods. That's been the hold up.
- tom957, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3That would be awesome. I'm waiting...
- tech42er, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Let me break this down for you. iPodLinux and Rockbox, two complete, 3rd party, open-source operating systems al ready run on older iPod models. They haven't been able to run on newer models (2G nano and newer) because Apple encrypted the firmware. The injection of any code means that this yearlong project to find a way to break that encryption has achieved success. All they need to do is bypass that firmware encryption and you should be able to run iPL or Rockbox on newer iPods, just as you can with older iPods!
- maxshanly, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3I'm surprised that it has taken so long for people to start looking into developing alternate firmware for the newer iPods. But I am even more surprised that since there is an iPhone Dev Team that there isn't an iPod Dev Team.
- LocalDocal, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Slow or not, it is running, isn't it? Before seeing it for the first time, I had not even realize that running a Windows 95+ OS on the PSP was even a remote possibility, so to see it done was highly impressive.
I mean, to put things in perspective, the SNES emulator on the PSP has still not been perfected (even Super Mario World doesn't run 100%), so from my view, getting Windows 95 to run at all was a fairly neat feat. - Codename, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2I think that was DOOM, I could be wrong though. Still this is great news!
- Vinvin, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2And you can just drop your songs on your iPod instead of needing a separate application for it. Well, at least Rockbox can, but I suppose once iPL is supported it won't take long for Rockbox to work too.
- ghostENVY, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2For An Ipod To Run uClinux is outstanding , We Dont even have that in the PSP Scene ( We do but needs additional hardware and materials , POC).
Props - P373Y, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2i remember having doom on my 4g monochrome ipod. good times
- tech42er, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2We've already had iPL and Rockbox running on older iPods (I put both on my 1G nano a few years ago). Hopefully this amazing breakthrough by the iPL4N team means that it'll be running on newer iPods too!
- nenadsuperzmaj, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2"i remember having doom on my 4g monochrome ipod. good times"
man, you make it sound as if it was 30 years ago :) - geoffp, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1I like it because I have tons of music in a variety of formats that I don't care to transcode.
- Agentdvd, on 07/05/2009, -1/+2I've been waiting for this for about a year, then my nano got bricked. Now its released. Figures right?
- MattBD, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1I went in Waterstones today (UK book chain) and there were loads of books in a clearance box, and a surprising number of them were ones teaching you how to use the Zune. But they don't sell the Zune in this country!
Epic fail! - strangewill, on 07/05/2009, -2/+3Don't get me wrong, that's cool, but it just seems very little progress for a years worth of work, and considering by the time anyone will get Linux on an iPod Apple will change all their hardware anyway.
- Vinvin, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1And then -hell yeah!- I'll finally be able to run it on my iPod too, the first unsupported one >.<
- ashadocat, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1linux on ipods does have benefits, like wikipedia. you can install a good wiki reader on it.
- davzie, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Good point, that's the advantages of it. If I did have stuff that wasn't in MP3 then I'd be looking at a more open MP3 player.
- geoffp, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Ironically, I might buy one if I could put Linux on it. :)
- strangewill, on 07/05/2009, -2/+2So if it takes a year to run "some" injected code, how long will it take with this exponential growth to get an ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM to run?
5 years? 10 years? It starts to sound not worth the time. - Vinvin, on 07/06/2009, -1/+1It wouldn't, see the iPodLinux site :)
- ashadocat, on 07/05/2009, -2/+1Ever heard of something called exponential growth? It takes years to build the tools to build the tools but once you have them work tends to last less then half the time. This is the first time anybodies been able to run non-apple code on a nano. it's a zero day hack and once it's working they just need to write a c-compiler in assembly then they can compile the rest of the linux code onto it. with a few kernal tweaks to support the nano's slightly different hardware (it's probably close enough that they can use ipod linux drivers) you have working linux. if these guys are serious then they could have nano linux running in a few months
- insanebrain, on 07/05/2009, -2/+1Hot!
- SniperZero, on 07/05/2009, -2/+1Cold!
- finferflu, on 07/05/2009, -2/+1If I recall correctly, you can play Quake on the iPod, if you jailbreak it...
- dafragsta, on 07/05/2009, -5/+2What is the point of this? Are there any good apps that take advantage of it? Is anyone doing this on the iPhone? It seems like the hardware would be a little beefier than what's in the iPods.
- bashmohandesx, on 07/06/2009, -7/+3WHY WOULD ANYBODY NEED LINUX ON AN IPOD??
