- eclectro, on 11/01/2007, -0/+35Because non orf the turd companies will release the specs to the chipsets or we would have decent drivers already without dell having to ask for them.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25I'm pretty sure this was on the front page already.

Digg it for another front pager anyway. Let's make Sweaty Ballmer break another fine piece of furniture. - honds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Yes, you're right, it is way faster to develop the driver's yourself by reverse engineering without knowing the specs of the hardware instead of pressuring the people who know the system better than anyone else (because they designed it) to fix it. I see your point.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15If Dell asks, Dell will receive. The point is they sort of sell a lot of hardware and pissing them off is not a good move for companies. If Dell continues to expand their Linux line then naturally the Linux compatible hardware will become generic to keep costs down (having the same machines for both Linux and Windows makes sense, allows you to streamline production). In this way companies without Linux drivers will find themselves losing sales in the Windows sector with Dell. Things like ATI cards would become side lines with Nvidia dominating the range, same with Broadcom (except they could disappear altogether).
Just a matter of time. If Dell sticks it out with Linux then these companies will either have to release capable drivers or will find themselves losing real market share. - sshack, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Looks like Dell smelled the money after offering computers running linux.
When big companies smell money, you can guarantee you'll get attention. - ChrisRX, on 10/10/2007, -14/+25So why don't they hire people to improve the drivers? I'm sure they'll get done a lot quicker that way instead of saying We're rich and we want better drivers.
- jejones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If Dell is serious, then it will go whole hog--and say to manufacturers "provide either drivers with feature and performance parity with your Windows drivers, or make public the information needed to write such drivers--or we won't use your hardware for ANY of our computers, not just those we selll with LInux preloaded."
- colem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Right, and in return Dell's customers want better tech support not outsourced to India.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5PC does not equal windows
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Why would I want to cripple my perfectly good hardware?
- FiftyPoints, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6I've never purposely infected a computer with spyware and I don't plan to start now.
- Drizzit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think that AMD will put out better drivers for it's graphics cards. They already have driver people on the processor side of the business that help things along. I would not be surprised if they have those same people working with the graphics card teams right now fixing this issue.
Now if Dell could only get say Broadcom to publish drivers for Linux and we'd be on a roll. Unfortunately I suspect that Broadcom might have issues with any open source drivers exposing lets say a lighter attitude towards other people's IP. - Julolidine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Linux isn't crap, its the device drivers that sometimes suck which jades a lot of peoples experiences. Unless you have fully supported hardware, its going to be a tough setup in the beginning, which turns a lot of the common public off.
- Nightfall, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10Dell isn't in the business of making drivers. To be honest, the drivers should be in the hands of the hardware manufacturers and lets be honest here, some of them just don't see the money in making and supporting drivers for an OS that not many people use. Not bashing Linux here, just stating a fact.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6finally we get a big voice of support!
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Indian Tech Support teams have a hard enough time diagnosing Windows issues... Imaging them trying to tell a user how to type something into Terminal!
The phone would probably melt due to user frustration! - captcanuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5>Amit Bhutani told a session at the Ubuntu Live 2007 conference that Dell has several "areas of investigation" when it comes to Linux.
This doesn't sound encouraging. The proper way for an OEM to engage with Linux is to contact their hardware manufacturers and request Linux. This is a business-to-business engagement.
Amit, from above, sounds like he's some guy who sits in basement with the rest of his ragtag team and "does Linux". It sounds like he needs to engage on the business side instead of passively "investigating".
Dell is big. Their HW manufacturers will listen to them so long they ask for Linux. Let's hope that this guy is actually pushing the business side instead of just technology. - trekkie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5yes but if Dell said 'we'll switch our embedded adapters to a vendor that offers an open architecture we can write drivers for' I think that would have more leverage than saying 'hey look at us asking someone do to do something for us with no monetary value to them as an incentive'
Video card and computer companies still want to make money. If Dell said 'Hey Company A, our default video card will be yours if you offer this' vs 'Hey company a, hire a bunch of people to write something that will give you marginal improvement in sales'
I hate that I'm more of a business management role than a tech role, but that's the kind of business case crap I see on a regular basis now. - weebit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5*Weebit does the happy dance."
- Bloc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5poor effort.
- AlexFerny, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8old news
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because the sole enjoyment they wring from life is trolling Linux topics. Really they can't live without Linux.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I purposely chose Linux friendly hardware when I built my PC, (and that does not mean bad - it has a high end nVidia graphics card), and I can assure you, it's not crap in any way.
It works pretty well on my other computers though - on most the only things that don't work are wireless network cards - but all mine only took about 10 minutes each with NDISwrapper to make work. - mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3dugg, but isn't that consequence implied by this request? It might just be a more pleasant way to make the same threat.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If they don't see the money in it and are not prepared to release the info they should lose the related business.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tech support for Ubuntu comes from Ubuntu, which is locate in UK.
It's much easier to ask user to type into a terminal than direct them through a GUI. - init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2HP has a greater marketshare. Dell comes second.
- lysdexia, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6I've never used Linux - always macs or pcs - but it would be a great thing to have more choice and more competition. I'm open minded about computing and I don't care who provides my box. All I want is the best machine, best stability and the best software for the lowest possible price.
A beautiful and easy user interface that encourages you to be at the machine is also highly desirable. - chronichyjinx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thank god, it's about time somebody that can do something about it is.
- manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Once I get the source code for the world my life will be set.
- msiner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What "proprietary" hardware does Dell make? Most of the Dell branded hardware is OEM, like a Dell printer made by Lexmark and Dell wireless adapter using Broadcom chips. Please clarify.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Unfortunately, this was the fault of Broadcom being money-hungry ***** and MS basically paid them off to NOT publish drivers for any OS other than Windows.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Buried as anti-Linux spam.
- DoubtingThomas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That still leaves graphics card drivers, sound card drivers, NIC drivers, printer drivers, camera drivers, etc., etc.
- yenster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Go read George Ou's blog over at ZDnet about the RealTek gigabit ethernet drivers on Windows silently corrupting data (even with Microsoft's next-to-worthless WHQL certifcation) and tell me that Vista is "compatible with 2.1 million devices." *****.
- msiner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What drivers do you need?
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have an old Dell laptop that's not very linux compatible (SiS Chipset), but their newer systems are quite linux-compatible...
- TheLostSignal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Use Kanotix, works perfectly for my D620
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Way to convert your argument from "hey, linux has crappy performance" to "hey, linux is crap because it isn't popular".
And tweaking is really optional in linux, just like it is in Windows. The only challenge left is installing (or dealing with unsupported hardware, but then, I have faced that in Windows too)
The thing you keep failing to acknowledge is that Linux -is- mass-market ready now. It's stable. It's pretty. It installs (depending on hardware) more easily than windows. It has all the apps most users will ever need, with enough compatibility with Windows apps to bridge most gaps. It even has a growing selection of games. - init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They already do that, at least with regard to ATI hardware. None of their Ubuntu systems come with ATI cards, and they are not an option either. Dell simply told them that they'd like to sell systems with ATI hardware too, but only *if* ATI cares to improve their driver.
- manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You really should check for any loopholes to your statement. Think about what would happen if you didn't site sources in an essay.
- CCmachined, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1that, and the fact that someone who went to the trouble to buy an Ubuntu computer probably wont have the silly issues that everyone else does... :D
- CCmachined, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu.
Free, rich in applications, and comes with the beautiful and useful Compiz Fusion desktop effects. Check and mate. =D - manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm alway up for hardware vendors pushing for drivers so people can use their hardware with what OS they choose.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1W3Schools isn't the W3C. Besides, you could probably assume a higher proportion of tech-savvy people going to W3Schools than for people in general. And among tech-savvy people, Linux penetration is usually higher.
- manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Source?
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Trolling can be fun sometimes. I never troll computer-related threads, but when it comes to threads related to GWB or Creationism/ID, that is a totally different matter...;)
- manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Richard Stallman would slap you, listen to episode 182 of the linux link tech show.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree, that would probably have quite some leverage.
