- Nydendarin, on 05/28/2009, -3/+41Aesthetics and Linux working together?! IMPROBABLE.
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -13/+40If by breathtaking, you mean mediocre,... then I agree!
- okravetz, on 05/28/2009, -1/+22You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- D3koy, on 05/28/2009, -2/+21I guess it's pretty, but themes aren't the reason I switched to Linux...
- cawpin, on 05/28/2009, -2/+19Yeah, you wouldn't want to use something that the others use. You might not be cool then.
You are an idiot. - phpchris, on 05/28/2009, -2/+19So why comment at all?
- sikkdog, on 05/28/2009, -0/+16not just improbable...INCONCEIVABLE
- jnuffnuffnomnom, on 05/28/2009, -3/+17well certainly the wallpaper is nice but it doesnt seem different from Ubuntu at all
- Dumbledorito, on 05/28/2009, -3/+17Shouldn't it be named something more pithy, like "Minty Moose"?
- plainOldFool, on 05/28/2009, -1/+14Considering that my Broadcom card still doesn't work under Ubuntu but works flawlessly with Mint, I'd say it's a little more than just a skin.
- shadebane, on 05/28/2009, -0/+11When i was first curios about Ubuntu i tried it... failed due to graphics cards, so i pulled one to break sli... then it was problems with my sound card... then it was problems with my wireless card... I tried Linux Mint and everything worked ***** fine with no hassle. Don't disrespect it till you try it kids.
- amirman, on 05/28/2009, -3/+14i like the idea of linux mint which i guess is to make ubuntu look better and add more restricted and non-free stuff to the repos and initial installation but judging from my experience of the last linux mint release it's better to just use ubuntu and add all that stuff after the fact. linux mint was missing some key administrative applications. they use alternatives but the ubuntu tools, i think, are a lot better. i'd say the most substantial thing linux mint brings to linux is good gnome themes.

- Shmio, on 05/28/2009, -4/+14As someone that uses this distro day in and day out...it's amazing.
- 4UT0P1L0T, on 05/28/2009, -4/+13I've been using Mint 6 for a few months now and it's great. It has so many features and I haven't had a problem playing any of my media. I just completely removed XP all together. No use for outdated software :)
Give it a try... Remove that windows tit from your mouth! - ATL, on 06/20/2009, -1/+10I lol'd
- courtjester555, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9Basic facts in the headline FTW
- synapz, on 05/28/2009, -1/+10Inconceivable is a curious word. Anything it is applied to has, by definition, been conceived, and so the application is false.
- rhinofinger, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8Having used both Mint and regular Ubuntu, honestly, the best thing about Mint is that I like the default interface and theme better. Which I always end up changing anyway. Gotta say, though, they chose a nice default wallpaper this time around.
- xfile087, on 05/28/2009, -1/+9You don't say
- costumemaker, on 05/28/2009, -1/+9i would love to actually hear what distro you use. You imply that you do use Linux. Fess up and say what you use.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 05/28/2009, -3/+10I caught part of that retarded rework of King Of The Hill called The Goodes or something last night. They named their South-African son 'Ubuntu'. Great marketing gimmick!
- palladin, on 05/28/2009, -0/+7Clem and the rest of the team do an outstanding job with Linux Mint and they have outdone themselves with "Gloria." If you use Gloria for a while you will never want to go back to Windows. I'm not just a Windows hater either, I think that XP is a good solid OS, but Mint is better and free to boot.
- theaceoffire, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7I researched what he was talking about, and found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint#Disputed_p ...
I think he was against the actions of Israel against Palestine, such as bombing schools, making shirts with "kill pregnant woman: 1 shot, two kills" etc... Not against Jewish people in general.
it sounds a lot more reasonable than what was implied (That he had gone on a rant about how terrible jewish people were, or whatever). - Nephersir7, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7Linux Mint is ages ahead of Ubntu when it comes to installing and uninstalling applications. It has an unified software management platform and you can just right click on a app in the menu to uninstall it. Also, more things work out of the box. It has gnome-do preinstalled and is greater in terms of user-friendliness and usability.
- aphexcoil, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6When new major versions of a Linux distribution are released, is there a simple way to upgrade? Is there a "sudo apt-get install latest version but keep my existing confs the same" command?
- amirman, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7nice use of "to boot"
- aphexcoil, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6Hate to be that guy that answers his own questions, but according to linuxmint.com
"The upgrade path from Mint 7 RC1 is working fine. The upgrade path from Mint 6 will need to be tested and the upgrader will eventually need to be updated. This won’t hold the release though and we’ll make an announcement for Mint 6 users a few days after the release.
Please be patient and my apologies for the time this is taking." - chockster, on 05/28/2009, -1/+6What a ***** amazing story.
- dcormann, on 05/28/2009, -0/+5Obvious troll is obvious.
I like Ubuntu especially because without it there would be know Mint. That said Mint always finishs the job that Ubuntu starts. All the things that don't work out of the box on Ubuntu, is fixed in Mint. - freezerburn666, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7mint looks great, i prefer ubuntu for whatever reasons but would recommend mint to mom or dad...
- SteveMax, on 05/28/2009, -0/+4That doesn't help if your only net access is through the wireless card whose firmware you need before connecting. I don't live in the USA, the mirror I download from isn't in the USA, so why do the downloaded ISO have to comply to the USA law?
- HeavyNuclei, on 05/28/2009, -2/+6$ emerge -avDNu world
- kragil, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3Avoid One-Man distros! At some point burn-out, money etc will make him stop. And they tend to take (security) updtes not really serious (like Mint did in the past)
- DRNOOO, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3ho hum more like it - Linux - as far as looks wise is very generic with pretty desktop wallpaper
- amirman, on 05/28/2009, -4/+7yeah it also automatically installs 3rd party drivers, a few checkboxes in ubuntu's software sources would have fixed your issue.
- Technopundit, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2What was the longest you ever stuck with a single Linux distro?
- Technopundit, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Will my laptop's hotkeys work with Linux Mint?
- Technopundit, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2So my two laptop PC's with Broadcom WiFi are now Linux ready?
- mescon, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Buried for trolling.... you obviously have NO IDEA what you're talking about.
- MicrosoftBob, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Mint XFCE; give it a try.
- specialK16, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2You forgot the /s.
Although in all honesty it beats me why that show is still running. - inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Cool...thanks for the info.
- sageerrant, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Furiously sleeping colorless green ideas are pretty damn inconceivable, except as a meaningless phrase.
- TheSeeker11, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3Linux is pretty cool (used Libranet, Kanotix, sidux and Ubuntu) but Windows 7 is ***** sweet.
- twigboy, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2damn, i just got around to installing 6 and this comes out =\
nice to see they finally gave the login screen some love - Flooded, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1You obviously haven't spent much time with Ubuntu lately...
1. The interface - it takes 3 minutes with Compiz and Emerald to make Gnome look *exactly* like Vista if that's what you want.
2. The glut of distributions is because many of them are specialized. Need a distro for digital audio/video production? Use Ubuntu Studio. Need a system rescue disk? Use Knoppix or SystemRescueCD. Need Linux on your old PowerPC hardware? Use Yellow Dog. Need to set up a router using an old PC? Use Linux Embedded Appliance Firewall. Or maybe you just want a solid desktop. I prefer Ubuntu, but there are other distros that do are just as good, such as Linux Mint. The point is that there are certain tools better for some jobs than - Windows might be better for gaming, but try using it as a router or system rescue OS. Asking for just one or two Linux distributions is like telling all car manufacturers just to use one or two engines for every car they manufacture - I don't think Porsche or Lamborghini would go for that idea, not to mention consumers.
3. The only driver issue I have ever run into with Linux is for wireless cards, but that was 4 years ago - I haven't run into any problems since then. I can't say the same for Windows. That said, the problem you're having with your printer is not a problem with Linux, rather a problem with the manufacturer - they are the ones that should be releasing a driver.
4. If you absolutely have to have Office 2007, then dual boot. Personally, I can't stand the Office 2007 UI.
5. There are plenty of quality games that are available for Linux - E.g. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, America’s Army: Special Forces, Vendetta, and Flight Gear - all without using WINE. Valve is rumored to be working on a Linux version of Steam, so I imagine any game based on Source will be coming to Linux soon (I, too, have a soft spot for TF2 and dual boot to get my fix). But again, the problem isn't with Linux - it is with game publishers. And if you're looking to watch videos, I challenge you to find a format that can't be played in Linux via VLC or mplayer.
As with everything, there is a learning curve - even Windows. If you're willing to put in a little time to learn about it, you might find you like it over Windows or OS X. Or maybe not. No one is forcing you to use Linux. Don't like it? Then move on and let those of us that enjoy it live in peace. - specialK16, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2You got trolled buddy.
- KiraDnote, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2WARNING! - Norton Internet Security reports that the Linux Mint download site heanet.ie is unsafe and contains JS.KakWorm.G
- YourNameHere1, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Agreed, but if it's a rolling release then you've already accomplished a way to maintain the newest versions of every Linux kernel and package available without the need for a 6 month release cycle.....
It may be more difficult to maintain Gentoo, Slackware, or other 'built from source' distros..... but with Archlinux it seems much easier to use the 'pacman -Syu' command to stay using the newest versions of everything available in Linux without the need for the 6 month 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' or the fresh install.
But I guess the real answer to his ubuntu/debian/mint question would be:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -
