- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I have always thought that the choice of brown was intended to stay clear off FC/Windows XP's turf. SLED 10 goes the other way (seen the login screen recently?), but then again, Microsoft now holds Novell by the balls.

That's something you don't see very often.. Obviously cycles are more expensive than kilobits.. - Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Very nice! No installer scripts needed. And the blue theme is much better than the brown/orange.
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Looks cool, though I just use Automatix for the things I need.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7In America it is illegal. But of course the distros don't want to ignore one of the biggest markets. I don't think it's illegal in Europe.
- wallclimber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I downloaded Mint yesterday and tried it on one of my computers this morning. I now have a new favorite! It is very very nice.
- dick-richardson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have to disagree with you. Smelly Pirate Hooker is CLEARLY superior to Barbara.

Personally I love the blue and green default themes of SUSE. The brown and orange always felt too harsh on my eyes for any extended viewing, but to each his own I suppose.
Anyway, this is a distro I could get behind (and I'm a hardcore Windows + Mac guy). No *****, just installs. I like. - bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not dead baby, I'm just takin' a break.
- Sicarul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why would you? it's the same thing with another theme... just look for the theme files on Linux mint's CD...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://www.duggmirror.com seems to have caught it, but the screenshots weren't mirrored.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd recommend this to any WIndows user or Linux n00b.

- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3kubuntu feels like a hack, a pretty to look at ugly to use hack.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"why is everyone talking about the colour blue as if it's a revelation? KDE (comes with Kubuntu) is blue by default. Guess what, it's also nicer to use!"
Not even close. - mattholomew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's true, but MINT makes for an awesome live cd.
- cmost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I love it! Finally blue Ubuntu with codecs and other web plugins installed by default. Did I mention it's blue? I'm sold!! :-)
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the front page - not the walkthrough
- ij00mini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like how the desktop picture is called, "intelmac_blue"
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish the ubuntu team would include fglrx drivers on the installer cd's. I hate having to open my case, remove my ati card, and connect the monitor to the onboard before installing.
- LocDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Code name "Barbara"? It's no wonder linux guys never get laid. But I guess it is better than "Ecstatic Anteater" or "Smelly Pirate Hooker".
- smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4so we have a distro based on a distro which was based on a distro.
wow. - anthony0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not another car analogy please, for the love of God. The guy is trying to be funny and I thought it was. He does have a point anyway.
And yes, I use and love Linux. - closetosomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2torrent here:

- KhaaL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just tried this and have come back to say that it rocks! The support for my wifi card that I lost after breezy is back and I can finally have linux on my laptop again *happy*
The only dissapointment is that I expected a more green colour since its called mint ;> - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So is it possible to shift from Edgy to Mint (ROFL) without formatting and re-installing?
- Tyrekicker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And a number of other mirrors here:
http://lt.k1011.nutime.de/download.html - KhaaL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope this will have a out-of-box support for my poor wifi card that I used to have in breezy...
- vinnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, is this from Canonical stable or from someone else?
If not from Canonical, then, here again we have a competition on who wants to use what Ubuntu distro.
But then again, it ultimately Linux, that wins. I'm all for it. - TheExtendedName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they do in 6.10
- BitBurner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Isn't it illegal to distribute DVD codec (among some of the other things mentioned) with a release? Isn't that why Ubuntu and everyone else doesn't? I use Automatix with Ubuntu after I install. Pretty easy and its a no brainer. I'm sure it's still ilegal to get the dvd codecs that way to but at least i'm using a real Unbuntu.
- TheExtendedName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1download the alternet cd and do a text based install
then install the ati driver
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Edgy_Installation_Guide
this site might help too - Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Darn. I only downloaded the mint v1.0 the other day. Guess i better get re-d/l again.
Saying that, i cant install it yet anyway as i couldnt get my usb modem working (speedtouch 330, silver one..), and i couldnt use my hdd's from inside mint either. (while using the live cd)
While it may be easier then previous linux versions, for a windows user, its still a big pain in the arse to setup when you dont know anything about the OS. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The alternate installer CD works, but your first boot must be in recovery mode. Then sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change ati to vesa. You can then reboot and boot normally, apt-get install fglrx and everything should work.
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A couple of screenshots from their site: http://linuxmint.com/screenshots.html
that second one has an Ubuntu wallpaper! Also, I give this a few days before Automatrix is able to handle all that Mint has, including the 'blue' look. I'm all for competition, but getting farther from the Debian tree is something I'd worry about, in terms of support. With Ubuntu, they're obv not going anywhere. - sekyuritei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't have much faith in these guys if they haven't even modified splash.rle (the default boot screen) from the original Ubuntu menu. Why make an offshoot "distro" w/o customizations?
- vp0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does anyone know if there is a way to install this with an ATI video card?
it's pretty much the only thing holding me back from adopting Linux right now, last time I tried to install Ubuntu it wouldn't even let me get started. - kozicka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I assume you have the same problem as I (and others did) with it not detecting screens and therefore not starting X. I followed this guide and have managed to get X working.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=190133
After a bit of tinkering around I am pretty impressed with Ubuntu, I've tried it before but always had the Ati card problems so never could get it working properly. So far its going well, only managed to bork my user account once so far :)
There are some good guides kicking around for getting correct ATI support working, although when I tried to install Beryl it screwed up X (see above comment on borked user account) - willorbill1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is what i have been looking for for the longest time.
I use Fedora C5 and i am a GNOME fan (KDE KSux) was just gonna upgrade to FC6 but now that i c this (Ubuntu being identical to Fedora)
I no what my new OS is! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can get Automatix2 (most recent version) from here:
http://www.getautomatix.com/
Automatix will take care of all the little, odds and ends that make your distro 100% ready to go. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why is that so weird? Car companies are the same way. One company makes a car, and then another company copies it (or a new model is made) that is better than the older one. Why once again base it off the older one than base it off the new and improved one?
- TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A great idea but not enough to draw me away from Kanotix, which also comes with restricted formats included.
http://kanotix.com/index.html - aragon127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i c u r a f-ing moron.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What a unless "distro." Get Ubuntu, install the same blue theme and just download the "all" codecs. Yes, there's repository Oh that's right - I think that theme is included with Gnome anyway only withour the Ubuntu logo in blue :p
What is it with this distroitis anyway. There's another thread where they came out with "distro" that Ubuntu only with MythTv installed. How stupid is this anyway? There's already a .deb package somewhere for that, if not a repository. Knock it off with all these "distros" that serve no purpose at all.
Bury away - vprasad1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody got a torrent link or know of alternate mirrors for Mint?
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"The desktop is GNOME 2.16.1 [...] Amarok 1.4.4 instead of Rhythmbox."
I ain't touching that peice of bloat... Two different DEs should never be mixed. -
