- bootrom, on 03/25/2009, -0/+28Just to clarify, the filesystem is called Btrfs not Brtfs. More info about the filesystem here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Btrfs
- Humptydank, on 03/25/2009, -2/+27Finally, an alternative file system that didn't kill anybody.
- bcassner, on 03/24/2009, -0/+18Cool new temporary logo replacement for Tux, we now have Tuz the Tasmanian Devil! Btrfs sounds impressive, hope it works as well as they are predicting it should.
- Dr.Neko, on 03/24/2009, -1/+18I've been keeping an eye on Brtfs for a while now, and I'm glad to see this progress. I can't wait for a stable release.
- mrsteveman1, on 03/25/2009, -1/+17Hmmmm yea, quite a huge one.
* Extent based file storage (2^64 max file size)
* Space efficient packing of small files
* Space efficient indexed directories
* Dynamic inode allocation
* Writable snapshots
* Subvolumes (separate internal filesystem roots)
* Object level mirroring and striping
* Checksums on data and metadata (multiple algorithms available)
* Compression
* Integrated multiple device support, with several raid algorithms
* Online filesystem check
* Very fast offline filesystem check
* Efficient incremental backup and FS mirroring
* Online filesystem defragmentation
EXT4 does maybe one or 2 of those things. - k3rfuffl3, on 03/25/2009, -3/+18I wonder what ErneFS will be like.
- yoshu, on 03/24/2009, -3/+17Doesn't Linus usually make the release announcements?
- Canumbler, on 03/25/2009, -0/+14Ext4 is for lack of a better explanation the latest greatest version of the Ext family of filesystems. It's stable, fast, tried and true and comes with some very cool new features.
Btrfs is a new generation of filesystem altogether which includes features which would traditionally have been taken care of by another whole layer of software. - antoniuk, on 03/25/2009, -2/+15I hope this guy never ends up murdering his wife :(
- johndavidjack, on 03/25/2009, -0/+11What in the living ***** are you talking about? I think you are in the wrong comment thread. Probably the 'Do Linux Users Pay Microsoft Tax?" article...
- mmcgrath, on 03/25/2009, -0/+10This was done to raise awareness of the danger that Tasmanian Devils are in.
Here's the actual kernel commit message:

It will increase your WLAN speed! - drewniverse, on 03/25/2009, -0/+10Hm.. I knew I saved this other spare system for a reason. Installing Brtfs now. Stable or not, cutting edge is fun.
- mrsteveman1, on 03/25/2009, -0/+10a wafl with btr on it :)
- SoopaflySAM, on 03/25/2009, -6/+16worship Linus
- sanskrtam, on 03/25/2009, -0/+10Is there a huge difference between Ext4 and Brtfs? Just wondering.
- paulsabo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+8I think he was getting at how there would be no special reason to mention Torvald if he does indeed usually make the release announcements.
- Tenareth, on 03/25/2009, -1/+9What he meant was:
Isn't it normal for Linus to make the release announcements? - arbulus, on 03/25/2009, -1/+8You win an Internet, sir.
- ThantiK, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6Actually you can have *MORE* than 4096 processors. This kernel actually addresses the issue that clusters with OVER 4096 processors were getting segfaulted/heap overflows, etc
- ThantiK, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6Last I checked, you didn't HAVE to use BTRFS. Not using it means not using it in the kernel.
- TiMMY8765, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6it's easy to remember, just think "ButterFS"
- perlfu, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6I wouldn't say Btrfs is a new generation unto itself. It's part of a pre-existing generation of filesystems such as ZFS/WAFL. Either way I'm certainly looking forward to testing this out.
- ethana2, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6I recommend not using Digg while under the influence of potent drugs, pharmaceutical or otherwise.
~ubuntu dell owner - rmxz, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5This filesystem was contributed by Oracle. While Larry has an interesting history of multiple ex-wives and while he won a sailing race where 6 competitors died I don't think it's at risk of such a fate.
- init100, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4ORACLE, One Rich A****** Called Larry Ellison
- Lunarbunny, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/BTR- ...
BTRfs? - shifty2, on 03/25/2009, -3/+7BTRFS = ButterFS?
Edit, the wiki entry has it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Btrfs (first line)
at least it does not kill the wife...
/too soon? - avothecat, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3...A waffle filesystem. I like the sound of that :D
- Swivelstick, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Who's the mother?
- pentiumii, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3omg your right i didn't even read this story some how mt comment got posted here
thats ***** up it kinda like engadget i had the same thing happen there before i guess ignore my comment i have no clue how it got here - Nicoon, on 03/25/2009, -1/+4Why, yes.. I do like my WAFLs with BTR on them!
- theaceoffire, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Although if I could install Windows 8 to ext3 I would be a happy camper.
- nepidae, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Its the same when Steve Jobs or Bill Gates would make announcements /shrug.
- nadcraker, on 03/25/2009, -5/+7FTA
"None other than Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, announced last evening the immediate availability of Linux kernel 2.6.29, a version that brings initial support for the highly expected Brtfs filesystem." - mrsteveman1, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2I've been watching it too, in the mean time i've been using ZFS-FUSE for a month with no problems.
- init100, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2@pentiumii
"some how mt comment got posted here"
I'll tell you how: You posted it here. - Langford, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2It will be like BrtFS, except it will eat cookies in bed.
- 4321234, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2What's this squashfs4? Will it make for snappier live cds?
- johndavidjack, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2I've been using ZFS for a year, and it's awesome.
- tmuth, on 03/25/2009, -1/+3At the desktop or small server level the advantages of Brtfs over Ext3/4 might not be that significant. When you start dealing with enterprise level storage scenarios, the differences become a lot more clear. Keep in mind this came from the Linux group at Oracle, so they have a vested interest in making storage easier, more reliable, more scalable, etc.
- init100, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2"Ext4 is for lack of a better explanation the latest greatest version of the Ext family of filesystems. It's stable, fast, tried and true"
Latest and greatest, maybe, but stable, tried and true, not so much. I generally like new technology, but in file systems I'm pretty conservative, as I'd like to steer clear of file system bugs that may cause data loss. - PawFox, on 03/25/2009, -1/+3I like the new "Tuz" it looks cute, sort of :/.
- Swivelstick, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1you mean the other daddies
- Canumbler, on 03/25/2009, -1/+2perlfu:
Yeah you're right, that should have been "part of a" instead of "is". - init100, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1Or BetterFS.
- mooninite, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1Yeah sorry 'bout that. My keyboard batteries were dying and I didn't have enough juice to finish the part about 4k cpus.
- johndavidjack, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1It works, but it certainly isn't great.
- rusty0101, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1As much as I like the idea, I think I will wait for a stable release. Granted that may be a late testing release in some distributions, but I want to use it as a fs that isn't likely to become write-only unexpectedly. Maybe I'm just strange that way though...
- funkytaco, on 03/25/2009, -1/+2How does it compare to ext3? Is BRTFS journaled?
