- Dumbledorito, on 04/03/2009, -2/+100Because the OS powering your console is more important that what games are available for it.
- Chrysalii, on 04/03/2009, -5/+48wow, a pc!
- Ramzy, on 04/03/2009, -1/+42Specifications are a little underwhelming for a $380USD console...
- ChuckDees, on 04/03/2009, -3/+44Wasn't April 1st a couple days ago?
- ThinkRad, on 04/03/2009, -1/+33I think this is a great concept, but it seems like zero effort was made to try and appeal to people outside of the Linux faithful. Couldn't they have hired an industrial designer to make it look less 1988 VCR and more bleeding edge console?
- dingclancy, on 04/03/2009, -1/+26I'd buy it if they release Penguin Racer 2009
- Maudrid, on 04/03/2009, -1/+24Can't I just load the OS onto my PC (of about the same spec) and save $380?
- raustin, on 04/02/2009, -2/+23Amiga-based games? I like the concept, but will there be any big name games?
- anubis2night, on 04/02/2009, -1/+22cool now a couple of questions: How about online play? maybe they should implement a app store as well to get this thing going. Also would love the ability to customize the wallpaper and anything else we can think of, with linux being for the people and by the people it would be great to have a console that is truly open for the people to make it's own.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+19This is cool, although probably has 0 appeal.
- Scrappy1850, on 04/03/2009, -1/+17its a logitech. they make good controllers
- stann65, on 04/03/2009, -2/+17Very little design work gone into this. That image is just a pc case with an old style Logitech pc games pad.
If it is to succeed it will be purely because of price effectiveness not visual appeal.
Video codecs -- H.264 VC1; MPEG2
Why just have them codecs when its linux? If they put all the major codecs on there, especially Xvid and DivX, there would be a few more people interested in using it as a media centre to. - Karai, on 04/03/2009, -4/+19......Like every other game console?
- bezz, on 04/03/2009, -0/+12$380? Meh, just get a ps3 and put a linux partition on it. Ps3 and xbox360 already offer online game downloads, so what makes this box attractive?
- legacyboy, on 04/03/2009, -0/+12Did anyone else notice that the reflection in the images is upside down?
- ModernDayDarwin, on 04/03/2009, -2/+13potential for a PlayStation Killer? You're kidding right? Getting into the game console market isn't easy. In fact it took Microsoft selling at a loss for 2 years before they had enough share and power to actually garner some of the market. it also helped that they had exclusive rights to an INCREDIBLY popular game (Halo). Unless this company has enough capital to make no money for a while, I don't see these guys going anywhere.
- supersonicjim, on 04/03/2009, -0/+11I prefer my consoles to have at least 3 appeals.
- Tordenflesk, on 04/03/2009, -0/+11And what's gonna stop someone for taking an image of the drive and "share it with friends"? This sounds like something anyone can put on a spare box.
- Cerialthriller, on 04/03/2009, -2/+12they need to drop this to $180 and get AAA titles for this to even have a chance in the current console market. People arent going to pay $380 for a console they've never heard of. You can almost buy a Wii and 360 for that price.
- PIZZATIME1, on 04/03/2009, -1/+11ATI HD 3200 graphics? That's insanely weak.
- pHr34kY, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10So, an AMD 780G machine running Linux? Already got one, and it was a LOT cheaper than that.
- powatom, on 04/03/2009, -2/+11Probably not for a while - it will be a hobbyist kind of thing and then if successful in that area it could attract some serious developers. It's hampered by the fact that A: Nobody really knows it even exists, and B: Developers are scared of Linux.
Could be a nice toy but serious gamers are going to ignore this. - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8Archon was originally made for atari 8-bit computers and later ported to C-64 & Amiga. Bard's Tale was originally made for Apple II and later ported to C-64 & Amiga.
- ShyGuy91284, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8Ok. Good concept. Now plop some marketing muscle that can play with the publishers and population, a current/nextish gen video card, and perhaps it will actually be a great idea. I know I've always been a fan of the idea of an open console.
- Myztry, on 04/03/2009, -2/+10This has potential. The Wii, PSP, DS, etc has shown Microsoft and can get they're butt kicked by lower tech games.
The only real issue is the console price. But the business model would be reversed. The console would not be subsidised but the games wouldn't amount to extortion either. Cheap subsidised consoles cost a (not so small) fortune if you actually buy games for them.
The Amiga aspect is interesting as there were 10's of thousands of games released for the Amiga. Including many big names and franchises. An average game is under 880k (1 Amiga floppy) so games could be downloaded and be playable in under a minute.
They don't need developers (that was done years ago). All they need is licensors. The game binaries still exist thanks to Mame and other collections. AmigaForever.com sells legal AmigaOS ROM licenses. Put up a Steam like service and charge a couple of dollars per game. It would be a very lost cost exercise utilitising other neglected IP.
And of course they are stll Linux boxes for the modern computing aspects.
http://eager.back2roots.org/ contains a list of Amiga games. - Scrappy1850, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8everything is fine but the vid card.
- Killer_Manbeast, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8Agreed. Get id Software to make a version of Enemy Territory:Quake Wars for the console, that I _might_ pay for. World of Goo might also be fun to play on it.
- Myztry, on 04/03/2009, -2/+9Electronic Arts got it's break on the Amiga. I'm sure they'd like to open the back catalog if there are some $ in it.
- MWeather, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Mess around? You've never actually used wine, have you?
You install wine and click the executable. For 90%+ of games, that's all there is to it. - shadowspawn, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8I like the idea, but it needs a better case, probably, to sell.
If it was cheaper I'd get it. Heck, if I can just get the software, that's all I'd need. I'd make my own out of a spare computer. - tgilbert, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7That's exactly what I was thinking... I currently use an Archos with a docking station to stream videos to my main television through fuppes (uPnP) and it works well. Problem is that Archos doesn't support mks and some other formats.
I've been thinking of buying another PC with HDMI out, but you can't do that for $380. I am just trying to figure out if when they say "Open Source" do they mean Free (such that I have root access to the box) or just Open Source games that I can download (many for free) via apt-get or whatever. - mabsark, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8What's the point of this console? You could build a budget gaming rig for the same price.
- Binarydemon, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7"Most of the initial lineup of nine open-source games, three of which are pre-loaded on the system, cost $20 apiece"
A linux based console, charging for open source games? That seems wrong somehow. Games like Tremulous and Alien Arena should be free. - thisthatwhat, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6This is one butt ugly console. My PC looks better than it.
My PC runs Linux too and it can do more. What's the point? - Myztry, on 04/03/2009, -2/+8Yes, they were on others before. But they didn't really make it big till the Amiga.
Several of the technical aspects of the Amiga were codeveloped with EA.
I was a C64 cracker/demo scener prior to the Amiga. I'm well aware of EA during that era - but that was kind of an embronic stage. - javaroast, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6Yeah it is ugly and the site is atrocious. I'm a big fan of linux, but this one looks like it's dead before it ships.
- ibeetle, on 04/03/2009, -3/+9I was thinking the same thing. One could just about build their own Lynux gaming box for that price.
- DivineMonkey, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7As much as i love Linux, this is going to fail.
- powatom, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6MerchantofPanic - the PS3 doesn't run on Linux. It is CAPABLE of running Linux. This thing runs on a modified / stripped down version of Fedora. There are tools available to make game development easier, but Linux is not designed from the ground up to facilitate game development, whereas the PS3 system is.
- PorcusWallabee, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5I thought it came with a hat
- Riavenge, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6Good news, i hope it idea will receive development.
- angito, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Most likely its due to licensing issues, but I'm sure you can download those codecs later.
- Narishma, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5The console is basically a PC and ETQW already runs on Linux. They have a poor video card in there though so I doubt it would run very well.
- metalstorm, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5I dugg this thinking it would be a nice cheap open source gaming system. Then I read it was $380. I don't think they are going to have any success with this at all unless they are able to make it much cheaper. As it stands it doesn't appeal to the average gamer but why price it out of their price range to make it appeal to them even less. Why does it need water cooling for a downclocked CPU?
- bhalo05, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Indrema.
- flammablewater, on 04/03/2009, -2/+7They make good Mice. I have NEVER used a good controller that didn't come with a console. Apparently it's really complicated to make a good analog stick? And if anyone's wondering why no one can make a good D-pad anymore? Nintendo patented it in the 80s
- computershack, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Ati Radeon 3200 running in 1080p? There's gonna be some really ***** framerates there. Twice the price and 1/10th the power of a Xbox 360 and they're gonna charge for Open Source games you can play for free? Also, I wonder how interested Sony might be about the controller as it looks very PS2...
Epic fail. - flammablewater, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6XBMC has a WAY better interface. Fantastic piece of software that.
- DivineMonkey, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6You mean 'Gimping'.
- ilikeeggs8877, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4maybe he meant "PlayStation" in the most literal sense....?
