I'm hoping that if I keep saying it enough, it'll come true and I won't read "Linux game company closes doors" in 6 months. - Aitese, on 11/11/2007, -1/+51Commendable as this is why on EARTH would I give these guys money for such a poor effort?
Screenshots: http://www.sixthfloorlabs.com/projects/alexandria/
What the hell? The idea is a good one but the games suck...they suck big time. - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -19/+54Linux becomes more popular everyday, while people flee from the horror that is "Vista".
- TrueBuckeye, on 11/08/2007, -0/+33I'll admit that this is what is holding me back from using Linux full time. I wish them luck.
- Subterfug, on 11/11/2007, -0/+31I checked the calendar, it ain't the 1st of April, so what the ***** is this?
Their website http://www.sixthfloorlabs.com/ looks like tepid anus and they are working on ancient arcade games. How exactly is this going to give Linux desktop feasability? I understand someone playing an arcade game for nostalgia or something, but we're almost in 2008. How the hell can someone compete with games like Crysis when you're stuck on making arcade games.
/rant - geehossiphats, on 11/08/2007, -3/+26Guess who's getting my $$$ in 2008!
- Phocion55, on 11/10/2007, -5/+26I HAVE used Vista......so am I allowed to agree with CyberPhoenix that (at this point in time) it's just not an acceptable product from a multi-billion dollar technology company?
Ahhhh nope, guess not. I guess it just classifies me as a "Linux fanboy" rather than an "informed consumer". - HealthyElijah, on 11/08/2007, -0/+20I was amazed at the screenshots of the game! I to thought it was a joke. Very sad launch.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -6/+24Ron Paul.
- clonkid, on 11/08/2007, -0/+16After looking at the screenshots I think we should keep the ransom and let them shoot the hostage.
- smurfz, on 11/07/2007, -0/+14Converting Windows games to Linux would be nice. Gotta love Roller Coaster Tycoon =D
- jadacyrus, on 11/08/2007, -3/+16This has to be a joke. I could slap my dick against the keyboard and make a better game than that. Seriously, WTF?
This is no match for games like Tremulous for linux which actually have graphics that look like they were made during this century. BURY AS INNACURATE. - burbankmarc, on 11/08/2007, -0/+12Haha yeah, I agree. We don't need this, we just need more companies using OpenGL....like id, not half assed poor game writers trying to earn a buck by throwing around the GNU/Linux name.
- eternal464, on 11/08/2007, -1/+13did you not read the article? no, you probably didn't. they are being ransom based, which means everyone must collectively pay for the game in the form of one large amount before they are released, thus completely bypassing all pirating.
- Nicksname1, on 11/08/2007, -1/+13The transvestite hooker on 6th street and Main street?
- RonBurgundy76, on 11/08/2007, -0/+12Wow. Welcome to PC gaming in 1987.
Fixed that for you. - insllvn, on 11/08/2007, -1/+12As much as i support the idea that the graphics don't make the game, I am forced to agree. Call me when I can play something on par with Oblivion or BioShock. If the point is to win over gamers to the Linux platform, image is ALL that matters.
- GMorgan, on 11/08/2007, -1/+10Actually you'll find software piracy isn't an issue in the free software community. There will probably be calls for them to open source their game engine at some point but people will be more than willing to pay for the content.
- hilo4321, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9buried for, like others have said before me, the garbage they are spewing from their production facility
- bullhead2007, on 11/10/2007, -7/+16This is cool and all, but for gaming in general to prosper in Linux/MacOS they really need to make an open source competitor with Direct X. Now before you say "Well what about OpenGL", I want to say something. Open GL is great, but just about the only developer that still actively supports it is Jon Carmack. They need to turn it into an API that can truly compete with DX10, and develope SDK's and tools around it that will be competitive. Something the developers can latch on to.
- aiten, on 11/08/2007, -8/+17I've used vista, it's terrible.
Thanks - inotocracy, on 11/08/2007, -1/+9Why do all open source game companies websites look like poop? I know at least one of their employees must have SOME design talent. I miss Loki.
http://www.sixthfloorlabs.com/projects/alexandria/ - ha1f, on 11/08/2007, -1/+9Do you even read the junk you post? Loki didn't "return", a repository with OLD stuff just opened up.
- Flamekebab, on 11/08/2007, -0/+8What is THAT?!
- sirhomer, on 11/08/2007, -4/+12@ha1f Bloated, hard to customize, prebuilt unremoveable spyware (WGA), prebuilt unremoveable DRM, annoying prompts, bloated, ugly ass theme, ugly ass fonts, no tiling screen mode, bad command line tools, ***** drivers, properitary, no virtual desktop support, expensive, bloated
- GMorgan, on 11/10/2007, -1/+9OGL can compete with D3D. It is, in fact, superior to D3D in every way that matters which is why it is the standard in all 3D graphics outside gaming (including that minor moving picture industry). The problem is that support hasn't always been guaranteed on the Windows platform, while MS have naturally supported D3D.
- brianary, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8I've had more trouble with hardware on Windows than Linux.
- brianary, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7The Mac is already gone. The Motorola hardware has been replaced by Intel, and the software is BSD. Mac has been borrowing from free software for years now.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -5/+12Screw making a whole bunch of new games, most will have to made free and the ones that aren't will be hacked in 5 minutes. Focus on making the existing Windows games playable on Linux WITHOUT cedega.
- Neiby, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8Wow. Welcome to PC gaming in 1997.
- sirhomer, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7OpenGL 3
- redcard, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6Then you don't know your market very well. I would imagine you'd LOVE to have as many people playing Quake 4 or Unreal Tournament on Linux playing your game and sponsoring your company.
Look, it's okay to not know how to do it. Just say so. Say "We don't have the technical resources at this time to accomplish that level of sophistication." Don't bring up this "Well, it's not very well supported an it'd just be hit or miss" when that's FAR from the truth.
But don't write a game in Python and then walk around acting like people owe you $40k. I really do wish you the best, but you're going to have to bring more to the table than eight levels and two self written pieces of music. - jameshighmore, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6http://www.sixthfloorlabs.com/projects/alexandria/ ...
That has to be a joke. - norman619, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6There is no real reason to move to Vista at all. I wouldn't recommend upgrading to Vista if you are happy with XP. There isn't a single piece of sofware out there wich requires Vista. The only people who may want to go to Vista are the gamers just for the DX10 eye candy in games but even this will not be for at least another year. The REAL Vista hardware reqs aren't the standard PC and will not be so for maybe another 6 months to a year.
- wafflesomd, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7Good luck guys.
- whiteguysamurai, on 11/08/2007, -1/+7I think if the linux world wants games, they would better be suited to creating a solid SDK instead of making games.
Then give it out to every university, devry and digipen.
That's why Microsoft is still king of the game, they give away really great game development kits. - brianary, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6My years of experience with Windows are now nearly worthless, since they decided to move things just for the sake of moving them.
What compelling features justify the half-assed UAC BS, and the extra cost? Sell it to me.
But mostly, I don't need Windows to check whether I'm "pirating" video 30 times a second. It's slow, it's one more thing to troubleshoot, and it's insulting. - RonBurgundy76, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5That's an insult to most undergraduates.
- OrangeTide, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5Wow that's terrible!
here's a free Linux game: http://cubeengine.com/
It's not the best looking game, or the most fun game. But I think you must do something at least this good before deciding to start a game company. - inotocracy, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5I guess I learn something new everyday. All I recall was them actually getting games for Linux out the door, then going under.
- EnderMB, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5I've been wondering why no other games companies have considered this approach. I'm sure that a top quality game on Linux would sell well just for the fact that it's on Linux.
I then viewed the screenshots...
What a crock of ***** *****! Efforts that poor don't deserve money or recognition. That's no more than an undergraduates computing project. - andycr512, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6Vista's OK, but I like XP much better. Vista is much more bloated than any other mainstream OS, but it's not the freak show some make it out to be. My order of preference is still Linux > XP > Vista, but for some it will be different.
- redcard, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5What do you mean, that the graphics support is just too spotty?
I don't understand the words that you are typing. Are you saying that you are incapable of coding graphically enhanced games?
Look, if you redo the art, it won't save this game. You need to move on to something else. Linux has plenty of shooters that outpace this game.
What you need to do is stop this ransom crap until you have something worthy of offering people. - GMorgan, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5The Powershell is actually quite decent. It's not bash but it's good enough that Windows is survivable without a full Cygwin install.
Vista had several serious issues that I'm told have been solved but I finally got the various libraries I use across Linux and Windows compiled and working on XP so I'm not going to try again any time soon. - shoerob, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5"Yeah, sure looks that way. See, thats the difference between a fanboy and an educated user. I can use one thing, but still understand the usefulness and significance of another."
I applaud your intelligence. Seriously. I hate how OS arguments are so one sided, how come people can't point out the good and bad features in both operating systems?
In my own personal experience,
Linux costs time.
Windows costs money.
Which do you prefer to spend? - RonBurgundy76, on 11/08/2007, -3/+8I used it. For about a month. XP is still better.
- Phocion55, on 11/08/2007, -3/+8It's not about the features I dislike. It's the ones that I was looking forward to seeing get implemented (PowerShell, WinFS, etc.)
It seems like the things that bring value to the CONSUMER get thrown on the backburner, while Microsoft works eagerly on the things that only bring value only to MICROSOFT (such as the "revamped" WGA system). It shows where their priorities lie in my opinion.
Why would I want to spend money on an OS that comes shipped with loads of software that have no value to me?
So for me, Vista is a no-go. But that DOES NOT in any way mean I'm ruling out the next release of Windows down the road. - brianary, on 11/08/2007, -1/+6Haven't used Linux in a while, huh?
- NihilFist, on 11/08/2007, -2/+7Don't get me wrong but... I wouldn't pay for a remade Asteroids game. Or any game similar to that.
- RoboDonut, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5You mean OpenGL 3.0?
The revision of the OpenGL API that was supposed to be released a month or two ago?
If so, I agree.
OpenGL 3.0 > * -
