- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30wow, we wen't from basically a no-go to a possible earlier than expected release.... neat :)
- XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Sounds like we'll see flash 9 well before the estimated time.
And I have a great theory in mind... maybe people just don't know how powerful the linux APIs are, so they don't program in them, so less software for linux.
Oh well :D - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Let's hope we see Flash 9 sometime by Christmas 2006 =)
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26For the love of god release a beta!! Please!
- cyax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Wonder if there's any chance of an alpha or beta anytime soon?
- Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12why don't the just release what they have. If it is buggy just say so. That way, the community can find all of the bugs.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This is good news. In order to view a site using flash recently I had to install the windows version of Firefox on Ubuntu in Wine. It works great, but it's retarded that I have to do this. I think that web developers should realize that they are isolating their market and build using older versions of flash until it is supported in all major Operating Systems. That would motivate Adobe to release new versions of flash with full OS support instead of tacking it on later.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13shh if they hear it works fine then they might cancel the linux port
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Well, we need to move the web away from Flash anyhow. I dunno what the solution is, but we just can't be left lagging behind like this anymore, waiting while these companies take their time with development when we could have done it a long time ago.
If you're a web designer, remember - Just Say No to Flash!! - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Mmmm... Flash..... Linux.... oh... must... have... more!! Oooh, yes!! Yes!!
- stoffe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ship with, no - one click away, yes.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8beta doesn't necessarily mean there's more bugs in the program it just means that it's not guaranteed to work, unlike a stable product which should work in 99% of cases
- burndive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Okay so when do we get it in x86_64?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Please sign also the petition for Adobe to port Flash Player on FreeBSD and PC-BSD: http://www.petitiononline.com/flash4me/
- BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Please Adobe, can we get a PPC version? With Apple moving over to Intel, lots of people who have G4, or G5 machines kicking around are going to run Linux on them once Apple stops supporting OS X.
- mezoko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That would be a great christmas present from Adobe!
- stoffe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Um. It has been a team the whole time.
- cyax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For applications with working alternatives you might have a point, but I'd rather take a beta release of Flash 9 (hopefully including a list of known working sites) than to stick with version 7 and incompatible webpages.
- SonicChao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah...it would. I'd like to see Flash 9 on Edgy. =D
- ubuntudemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It would be very cool to be able to have this in time for Edgy
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Flash wouldn't ship with Edgy anyway, it's not open source.
- StinkyMonkeyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very good news! It's interesting that just a few weeks ago the developer appeared like he was throwing in the towel. Now, the project (at high level tests), is coming along wonderfully. Just goes to show that giving up is easy, but if you reach out to the community, as he did, he got technical and moral support to push it along.
- cyax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent observation, at least Adobe is finally listening to the cries from the Linux community (better late than never I suppose). Sadly the majority of Windows users don't know enough about the issue to do much about it. Web developers should definately take it to heart though.
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If only devs would get going on 64-bit...oh wait in 2007 flash 10 for mac/pc will come out. I guess linux is left out in the cold once again on the priority list.
Of course, im naturally pessimistic. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2we have never been sure actually, i remember a blog post a while back that seemed to indicate he was basically it, i think thats changed...
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, please PPC Flash! Come on, Adobe.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes but they are working on making the code base more portable a la Firefox (or at least thats what they are claiming). In the future we should see closer to simultaneous releases.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5quote:
"What I'm saying here is that WE are having a lot of success at the high level-- "
does that WE means he is getting more help from adobe?
seems we turned the tide :-D - tenderstorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This time I can see the author didn't allow comments on his blog. Also, on the latest blog entry on his progress on the Flash Plugin, I see non of our PC-BSD comment released to public. I guess he got a huge amount of PC-BSD user comments. Censoring BSD users is just lame. It shows that this "fine" coder don't give a ***** about other operating systems that uses Linux application. Makeing Flash only available to ALSA sound architecture is stupid- this is one of ***** sound systems known in Linux, even OSS (OpenSound System) is better- total lack of escent mixing capabilities makes it totally useless.
BAN FLASH NOW!!! - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"ya, i want a G4 powerbook 12" to replace my thinkpad once it dies."
Spare yourself. I worked on YDL for 2 years, so I have quite a bit of experience with Linux/PPC. The 12" powerbook has different chipsets than the larger ones and iBooks. Sleep isn't supported. Sound if you're lucky. Video issues. Trackpad issues...
Besides, a 14" iBook is better and cheaper, last I checked. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3by the time flash 9 comes out for linux, they will hae flash 10 for windows! sux
- obediah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps because it's not ready? Having a million people hammer on code that should work is a great way to shake out bugs, but having a million people report the same 20 bugs that you already know about just wastes time and frustrates users
- sixtymhz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sometimes to get passed the Flash 9 requirements, I'll hackup the pluginreg.dat and change the Flash 7 to Flash 9. That will get me to view the flash unless there are certain effects that require Flash 9 information.
- nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4it would be worth news if it was an decent SVG + javascript editor.
or better, if mozilla and IE7 replaced javascript with python or tcl for good :)
oh well. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FTR I'm atheist. ;)
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya, i want a G4 powerbook 12" to replace my thinkpad once it dies.
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nah, javascript's not a bad language at heart, it's just having so many implementations and proprietary extensions makes it crappy. Also javascript can't just add features, because they need to be adopted by all the browsers first.
- Metal_Hurlant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've seen grammar nazis, but what are you? a "not enough nines" nazi?
"ooh! ooh! he didn't say 99.999%!@!!! I sure hope he never has a job that involves pushing a button because he'd push it WRONG every 100 attempts, and people would DIE!!!@!!"
Thank you for catching this. It's about time somebody stood up to people who use "99%" figuratively, as if to mean "close to 100%", when everybody knows it's quite far from 100% in many real life applications where people can DIE!@!!! - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1was that estimated time "never"?
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, let me get right on that Jacks0n.
- KBuck51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would too - we have a call center running SunRays and want to build a Flex App to manage customers in the call center, but with no Flash 9, we are having to do it in Ajax... maybe there aren't many desktops out there running Solaris, but we have 500 of them in the call center that are desperate for a Flash Player 9.
- ratsg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would rather hear where Adobe is at with the Solaris upgrade.
- beaverpants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.rawkins.com/games/do/index.html
dose not work in linux for me
Dolphin Olympics - sixdays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, added the feed for that page in my aggregator :D
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1solaris isn't really all that common of a platform for desktops, and i really don't know of any use for flash on a server...
- Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1why not just adopt ruby? Why it all of a sudden has to be languages you find fit? (though I have to agree, I don“t have enough knowhow on neither python or tcl to bash then, but hey, the world is doing fine with javascript for quite sometime, nobody died because of it i think)
Back to the topic, I am more concerned with flash performance on linux than the existance of whichever versior it is. Because version 7 vs version 7 on XP vs. Xorg, windows wins hands down. - Molt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you've ever used Flash you'd understand why companies don't want to develop anything for Flash 7 and below- it's just nowhere near as productive as later versions. The move to ActionScript 2.0 allowed developers to use a far more standard-feeling object oriented syntax (Javascript 2.0 based), which combined with far more powerful APIs, for example the XML and bitmap handling has come on in leaps and bounds, has just made the whole thing feel a lot better. It really isn't worth it financially for a company to pay the extra for development in an older version when it only picks up a marginal proportion of the target audience.
It is nice though to see Adobe doing more for Flash on Linux than Macromedia ever did. Hopefully during the development of this they've been applying the patches to the next generation Flash Player too so it'll be able to be released on Linux at the same time. - obediah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Agret:
Yikes! I hope your not a developer, or have anything to do with the development process. Working 99% percent of the time should not be acceptable for anything.
Imagine if airtraffic control software managed to avoid 99% of all potential collisions - that would mean a few coliisions PER DAY at each major airport. - Haiyadragon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Why didn't anyone think of that brilliant idea before. If that was possible we would have done it with Flash 8, assface.
I really hope it works well and that the performance issues (and resulting audio sync problems) are fixed. It may work fast enough on some systems, but it should get the same performance on Linux as it does on Windows..at least. - Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1May I ask you, and I may very well be a backfire on my face, but what bit of open source linux code have you written using the all mighty powers of the linux API?
