About the website... I was googling about LVM not long ago and they had some pretty good documentation. - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yea, LDP's been around for quite a long time and has always been useful for all sorts of information. How this made the front page of Digg boggles my mind but hey, it's digg. Nothing should surprise us anymore.
- DroidBlender, on 09/18/2008, -2/+9yeah, I just finally switched to Ubuntu two weeks ago. It's really great. I tried other distros, but I always went back to Windows because I wanted to run my favorite apps. So far, I've had no problems, and I've been using ubuntuguide.net and ubuntuforums.org :)
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Obscure distros have their uses. Nobody is being pretentious in using them since most obscure distros are quite simple. The point is to be limited for a specific task hence there is no real complexity to feel elitist about. If any users get accused of being elitist it might debatably be Gentoo or Debian but these aren't obscure projects in any way, shape or form.
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4man is not a cold learning tool. It's a reference for someone who already knows what they're doing, already knows the name of the command, and just wants a refresher or more detailed explanation that --help isn't giving him. You can't learn to be a *nix admin (or even a *nix user) with man any more than you can learn to use Windows with F1 help.
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been on and off with Ubuntu for a few months, mostly because I found that I actually had to figure things out (unlike windows, which I've used for years). Linux's online documentation is incredible, and between that and actually learning a little UNIX, I've made enough headway to be comfortable sticking with linux. Thanks to spankaccount for posting this on digg, and thanks to the linux community for being so helpful.

http://www.winehq.com WINE should allow you to (with hopefully little or no hassle) run the majority of your favorite windows programs. Of course, you're probably already familiar, but it's awesome enough to bear mentioning again. - spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'v actually been using LDP for almost 10 (maybe more) years now, but there are so many new people switching to Linux I thought I would give it a digg.
Also, man pages and HOWTO's often cover very different topics, even if the are both about the same command or service. - strain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5When i first heard of the LDP I was so amazed I fell off my dinosaur and broke my rock underwear. are you new?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think what would be great would be some kind of Missing Manual book for Linux based on these so beginners can begin at the beginning with a proper introduction to Linux. Man pages can be kind of intimidating to new users (not that I'm saying that's a problem here, I simply had an idea while reading this) if they don't know what to look for or how to find it (It might be obvious to long time Linux users, but for everybody). Something like those old but clearly written and illustrated Macintosh User Guide wire bound manuals would be cool. All the way from how to use a mouse to advanced bash commands. :-) I think it's time to induct the masses.
BTW, yes, there are people who don't know how to use a mouse. They shouldn't get left behind simply because we lose patience with "stragglers" of the digital age. - stoneyjonez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This site's been around for a looooooooong time. Aside from that, it is quite useful and informative. Dugggg
- spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no man page for Woman, but there is HOWTO at the LDP...
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Encourage-Women-Linux-HOWTO/ - Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meh, he's right about MSDN, it is a developer's best friend. Of course if the Win32 API was even remotely sane, MSDN wouldn't even be in existence. But seriously, its documentation for .NET languages, Direct3D, OpenGL and lots of other fun APIs makes it a great reference.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2FazzMunkle, with your ideas you might also like http://homecomputerhelp.org and http://freedomdrive.org Take a look and send me your ideas
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have to say that Linux still falls way behind FreeBSD in this aspect. Look at the brilliant documentation available with FreeBSD and it makes even the best documented Linux projects look thin on the literature ground. Of course the FreeBSD docs are very terse and to the point as any good Unix documentation should be. People who complain about such documentation should really try looking at it from our perspective. I get royally pissed off whenever I need to delve into MS documentation. It's as if they were trying to make the 30,000 word limit on a university thesis so decided to pad it out with meaningless tripe. I mean you can read 4/5 pages and not have seen any useful information.
Anyway the FreeBSD documentation is definitely something we should try to emulate in Linuxland. I know it is more difficult given the less controlled nature of the Linux world but still it should be the example we look towards, even if it means admitting that FreeBSD has some form of superiority over Linux in a few minor fields ;). - Sp1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10What are you talking about? I untar and grep women with my fat proc all the time! Women are a lot like Windows, very unpredictable.
- Erealz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2hey everyone those know this site been out like 10 year or more right?....just wondering why exactly where digging this?!whatever.
- shakeyshakey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1God this is going to be long.. every howto and faq wrote by some geek who doesn't know how to teach ***** for those who aren't geeks.
Way to go. - Asianne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Windows is definitely not unpredictable :p
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ready my comment above. MS documentation is all foreplay and pretty words, it never gets down to business. Linux documentation is just largely non-existent in some areas but no documentation is better than bad.
- Nitron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hey, everybody! I just discovered a great new site! You should check it out...It's called digg.
//sarcasm - netzdamon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not that LDP is not a great project but are you ***** retarded? And how is this getting digged up? 90% of this Linux posts come from people who have never booted a Linux box I'm going to assume.
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i hate LDP.

i've never found anything recent that is helpful on LDP. even a browse by date hardly has a few per month - and ***** like "aviation + linux", packet radio BBS mini-HOWTO, etc. of use to a few people, but come on. i see LDP being linked to everywhere but it never seems to have anything helpful for me (unless i'm running kernel 2.2.x perhaps) - Mactard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0tvtuner yields 1 result from 1-2005.
Digg it bra! - dirtyhippy42, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3It's just not as good as MS Knowlege Base or MSDN.
Go ahead and digg me down but I speak the truth. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Thank you, Capt. Obvious.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2It covers everything ever you say? How about obscure Distro's? Yeah, that's what I thought..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+7"Oh, I will copy n' paste the output of 'man man' but I won't add any comments to it, that will make me look smart!!1
Please pledge to end stupid "1337 badge" snappy comments. Please post your comments directly and leave the confetti replies home. - badogg, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2"No manual entry for woman"
LOL
Rofl - inactive, on 10/18/2007, -24/+8Obscure distros are for pretentious morons who think they're 1337 because they're different. Just like gays think they're "open-minded" and "free-spirited" because they like a sausage up their colon (like if they could have an orgasm that way, ROFL).
