I imagine that's would be because there's really no default Gentoo desktop. You just get a base system and then build/configure the desktop of your choice. - timbott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of these distros seem pretty similar. I think we need to see screen casts of the fringe "special purpose" linux desktop distros such as Userful's DiscoverStation for public computers where the look, feel and function includes more than just gnome or kde with a cool desktop background.
- charlesny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to find a match.
- drunkJerkface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't help but notice Gentoo isn't present.

Distro are NOT all the same. If they were the same they wouldn't be different distros. - ultra_lime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a new killer Linux screen capture out?
I wonder what they are using
DIGG + - BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In Linux? What are you using?"
Shockwave Flash 7.0 r61 - linshots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Flash works fine for me."
In Linux? What are you using? - choco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also, flash 8.0, which is not yet released for Linux. THose geniuses shut out all Linux users from their linux comparison
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0could they mirror these on video.google?
- Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good stuff.
- randallb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see how comparing distros like this makes any sense unless you show off the distro-specific features. Gnome on one distro isn't really different from Gnome on another distro. However, package management varies between distros.
What would be cool is if, instead of comparing distros, they compared various programs, like different audio programs. - johnkimble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool, digg... but... damn... i'm.. falling... asleep.... while... these.... load... *yawn... thud.
- traherom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, although you could make any distro look like any of those...
- linshots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like the Digg effect is killing it
- linshots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They state on the page "Other video formats will be available shortly. Suggest a format. ".
What is the best video type for them to post for Linux users? - BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flash works fine for me.
- KAMI_no_kodomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flash files? Witch pro-open sourcez peaple use sutch a propretary file format? No digg!
- linshots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linuxdemos sucks.. these guys are doing it right.
- diggidydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0really cool link, digg effect indeed
- yorick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OSDir has a really thorough screenshot gallery of newer distributions and some OSS applications.
http://shots.osdir.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all of it works here on gentoo...dunno whats the prob there
- linshots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"this is pointless" is a real slap in the face to all the distro developers that are trying to make a name for themselves. Most of them simply rearrange and tweak and include whatever they like to be different. Very few are actually different. The distros listed here are the major ones who have done the be at standing out by offering something unique. The site claims to "illustrate desktop Linux", which is what they do.
- toya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pointless, those distros either use kde or gnome, and they only show the windows, and programs.......... it doesn't show any little information of the differences of those distros, and they also open the same things too eh, i noticed kontrol panel, kongqueror are opened in every single one of them that uses kde
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The site is good for people who doesn't know Linux, but want to try Linux.. just like in society, visual attraction comes first.. then what's inside will be known later on.. DUGG..
- kroylar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Distro are NOT all the same. If they were the same they wouldn't be different distros."
Did I say they were all the same? No. I said they all look the same. The only thing that would make them look any different is different themes/WM's. I just don't think this is the proper way to promote linux distributions (by showcasing their themes). I agree with idiggit in this matter:
"Useless. What is more of interest is knowing the key differences, like packaging system, files layout, goodies and improvments." - kroylar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why would somebody even do this. Its not like one distribution looks any different that another if its running the same window manager. I can understand some screen shots of different themes and especially window mangers, but sorting them by distribution is just silly.
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nice

They're waiting for KDE to compile - mthode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Gentoo please

I'd give you one quicky... Ubuntu. For me it turned out to be Debian with an installer. - AuLKenny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0SOMEONE ADD GENTOO NOW!!!! SAVE US ALL!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Let me guess, they all look like crap?
- 5m0k3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0That's pretty nice.
