That's just disgusting. - rdanays, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11one word: http://distrowatch.com/ - the best one.
- srg13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@alien: Blocked
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8...what? lol
How can I learn and write my own when I can't make it through someone else's? - richstyles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9sudo digg this
- nauzilus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I've just started my blog... now, how to get people to visit it... I know! Create a really basic, generic entry about linux and post it on digg; IT'S BULLET PROOF!
Next time, put Ubuntu in the title as well. - zai-asal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hmm...no mention of Slackware Linux on that list, how about a Wikipedia article next time. The only plus for this link is it explained any operating system in laymen terms rather than being condescending or taking shots at fanboys.

Welcome to the digg block list. - Trenton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They never mentioned Red Hat/Fedora either. Which I was kind of surprised, they are pretty popular distributions.
Regardless, the article was great for someone who has no clue about linux, but wikipedia will do just the same just differently. - MrPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ah, that's better. Comments gone. Oh wait - that removes ALL his comments - that's even better!
- LikuiD105, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Great article !
I've always wondered about the different distributions of Linux ! - BTime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5And no mention of Linspire. It isn't entirely free, but there are some advantages for the non-PC savvy folks.
- Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 Naaa, still too many people who dish out the Linspire FUD and even more who believe it.
I use Freespire myself, but have used Linspire.
But at least some of the complaints about Linux will go away when CNR is open sourced:

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linspire_s_CNR_to_go_multi_Linux_remain_free - HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem with "New to Linux" guides are that I end up skipping over the stuff I already know and I always miss one key command and I have to start all over again to find out what it was... : /
- Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 That's not been my experience.
Ive used it over a year and am quite pleased with it.
And the 3D stuff is really impressive. - spatimouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow the article completely forgot to mention the the Linux Kernel used the GNU software to become a complete package. Only mention of GNU is with Debian.......
- andcal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone should make a guide that tells you the Linux equivalent on how to do things in Linux, for people who know windows very well. For instance, in windows, I sometimes access files on other computers using a mapped drive, and I sometimes open a terminal server session to another computer to use an application that is only on that computer. Is there a Linux equivalent to terminal server, or is SSH the closest equivalent? SSH provides a command line interface only, right?
Can you browse the directory structure on a Linux machine from a Windows explorer window, if you can provide the proper credentials? I am sure there are other questions I would have, I just can't think of them right now. - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny. I use it exclusively, and have seen several mass migrations to it, and have switched friends/family over to it myself.
I haven't seen anyone have problems using it. - randomguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awesome info, man!
- rollerboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a time when this would have been really helpful.
- darkchild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can share remote directories or drives using NFS (similar to mapping drives in windows). SSH is not command line only, so X sessions can be forwarded from one machine to another. This enables you to run GUI apps located on one machine on a different one. There are also vnc like apps available for Linux. As for accessing Linux directories from Windows, you would just use SAMBA. You Linux machine would appear on your Windows machine as an additional drive.
- patpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, I thought i have read about this back in 1999? wow...a dejavu....
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1have an ssh server running on the machine, and in KDE just point konqueror at the url
fish://user@machinenameorIP
Secure, encrypted, transparently acts like a "folder", and can be used with any web server or remote machine that runs ssh - you can also "Map drives" using knetattach, although it's not actually a mapped drive, it's a local url - a knetattached drive offers some pretty good transparent access by KDE apps, too.
You will never want to run microsoft SMB again. Fish is the best thing since sliced bread.
PS: If you ever get the need to use anything else, KDE can work with NFS, windows shares, FTP and so on in just the same way. - killdashnine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Keep informing the masses and someday (hopefully) Windows will become a distant memory.
- JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Keep informing the masses ..."
Ahhh, so that's the purpose of these articles constantly appearing on the front page of digg. There are masses of people here who've never heard of Linux? - loaded12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ Alien
Was that completely necessary?
Hey, Good job! You figured out how to use MSPaint... you are now one step closer to being able to use Linux. /sarcasm
Oh and while I'm commenting... Does anyone know the best way of setting up a Linux HPCluster? I'll probably only be using 2 nodes for now.
I'm Currently deciding B/w ClusterKnopix or OpenMosix on a RedHat Distro. (Fedora?) - samanathon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So learn and write your own.
- vcadambe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ehh...
This Linux thing will never catch on. :-P - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ohhhh, so THATS what Linux is.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Linux is great until you try to use it. If you want to understand why windows is so popular, try linux.
- spiderpk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0great information man
- Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2emerge -av Linux-101
- kb0x, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0No mention of linspire because it's a pile of *****.
It's "my first linux" for windows users who don't want to learn anything new.
