There's your problem friend... - keitho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18@ryodoan
when that person expects BETA software to be 100% ready to go then gives no credit to the continued development of free software, they deserve to be dugg down, just like you. - hpstg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Wow! I thought it was a Media Center version of Windows too. Pitty that they don't make things clear from the start. Who could have thought that LINUX MCE has anything to do with LINUX... Bastards...
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Here's a start:

- kirker187, on 10/11/2007, -9/+18Kubuntu rules!
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10A digg article on the front page will take down all but the most brutal clusters. Or didn't you already know that? BTW, loaded fine for me.
- motang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Well same like the site is under digg effect (very slow load time) here is the mirror:
http://duggmirror.com//linux_unix/LinuxMCE_Beta_1_1_Now_Available/plain.html - aaronwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You're expecting too much too soon. Any LinuxMCE install is going to take some tweaking, anyone who claims it is Plug and Play is not being honest.
- aaronwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I think we've all seen the video.
The news here is that LinuxMCE now runs on Feisty Kubuntu. - OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@ skrowl
what if I'm anti bush, anti hilary, pro military, pro US, and neutral on obama ? Do I get dugg up or down? - DickBreath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Quoted from TFA...
> ....so now LinuxMCE runs entirely within the KDE desktop and can be installed/un-installed and started/stopped like a normal app, and simply appears as an extra KDE desktop.
> Also, the KDE project's leader, Aaron Seigo, has confirmed that KDE and LinuxMCE make a nice fit, and the plan is to merge the LinuxMCE project into KDE for the highly anticipated KDE 4.0 release. Now with LinuxMCE, KDE will also deliver home/media PC users a media-rich experience with lots of eye candy and a 10' UI. Many thanks to AMD, Pluto and Fiire for making the connection, and also for providing a lot of technical assistance. - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yeah, wow is right. The sunday drivers have migrated onto the interwebs!
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I hadn't either, but the guy came off as a huge douche.
- evilTak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I haven't seen the video.
- Haohmaru, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'll have to remember that guy if I ever need a voice actor to play the "pompous jerk".
"Windows MCE doesn't KNOW how to turn on my TV. I have to do that by hand" - straxus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@OrangeTide
Yes. - amoore260, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Linux Media Centers and Home Media Hubs have lost a lot of focus. Linux MCE is proof. To often these projects are to complicated and require hours of set up and configuration and are loaded with countless options that are useless. I look at AppleTV and see the simplicity behind it. While AppleTV won't let you watch cable TV, it consolidates all a persons media in one place from different machines with easy. Thats also to say that AppleTv doesn't have it's disadvantages too. Being proprietary and only working with some media format as well as support for DRM is a real bummer. The only open source project that I see worth a hoot is Elsia.
Elisa is still in early but heavy development by Fulendo. It looks to be a real AppleTV killer. Best of all there is only one config file. and its easy to get up and going. Check out some of the screen shots: http://elisa.fluendo.com/screenshots/

Distribution-specific packages are available for Gentoo, Suse, Fedora Core, Debian and Ubuntu. Please read the instructions for your linux distribution on the Packages page. https://core.fluendo.com/elisa/trac/wiki/Packages

- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12I guess a link to the Wiki with /beta/ claims ain't much. Regardless, LinuxMCE is stunning. Here's a video:

"LinuxMCE Version 1.1 for Kubuntu Feisty represents a significant change over 1.0." - dadood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Comment made by another digger a while back: "the narrator dude sounds like the Simpson's Comic Book Guy"
I second that. - pyite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The best one to use is http://pchdtv.com/
Last I checked, the current model is the 5500. I have a 2000 and it has been working well for years. - mooninite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Whatever cards are supported by Linux (the kernel) are supportable. LinuxMCE won't bring any different support to the table.
Just search through the v4l2 drivers. - obe1kenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Usually you would have LinuxMCE on a standalone system, as I understand it.
- brownzilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If you have an HD tuner in your PC you will be able to watch unencrypted HD signals (most local channels) that are over the air (OTA) and a card that supports QAM will allow you to watch unencrypted signals from the coax line in your house. Unfortunately you can't watch encrypted signals like ESPN with out the box. It has nothing to do with the software as windowsMCE also has this limitation.
- littlebear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The best part of this i think is that ultimately it will be integrated with KDE 4!
*greenstar; yes you can install KDE along side of Gnome on Ubuntu, use synaptic and search for KDE. - mushroom, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5what tuner cards are supported? I can't find a list anywhere
- maino82, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3you can install as many window managers as you like and then just select the session you want to start (gnome, kde, xfce, etc) when you login. there's lots of tutorials up at ubuntuforums.org that can help you set it up the way you want it.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Ok, WTF. How do they not support the classic Hauppauge cards such as the WinPVR150, 250, 300 & 500?
- lsatkins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Good luck finding any decent HD channels that are not scrambled."
Well that answers my question. So there is still no solution to viewing the HD channels (like discovery hd, espn hd, hbo hd, etc.) on a pc and then outputting it to a tv? Any idea when that technology will be available (is cablecard 2.0 that technology)? - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Two cards... record two sources at once, record one and pause another, record two shows and watch a third with the TVs tuner, and I think (don't quote me on the last one) you might be able to split the display and show two live feeds at once.
- GreenStar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Is there any chances to relese a version for Ubuntu? Currently I do not want a brand new install for KDE. Or is there any way to install KDE as seperate session over my Ubuntu?
- GreenStar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks all for answering my question. Just curious how much disk space I need to install KDE (I already installed ubuntustudio). I am running little short of disk space.
- NICU, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4asaturn (and most computer users) may not understand how quickly Linux and open source software evolves. Most people are used to Microsoft who take 7 years to upgrade. Ubuntu takes 6 months between releases and there are usually pretty major improvements. A lot can change in a few months, and if you don't like it - its open source get involved - report bugs, help with documentation, contact developers, or *gasp* help with coding. You can't blame the programmers when the source code is widely available.
- Nyctoparros, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://forum.linuxmce.com/index.php?topic=1633.0 :
"When using the cache cd on install time, the system will try to install all the packages offline mode issuing an error when it tries to install the samba package on systems which fetched the samba-common update from kubuntu.
The quickest solution to get linuxmce 1.1 beta installed is to skip the use of the cache cd or to have latest 'samba' package installed before starting the installation."

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3689597 - MaximegalonInfo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good luck finding any decent HD channels that are not scrambled. This is for a Windows or Linux box. If you want HD, use OTA (not cable) for a DIY project this like. Your results may vary, perhaps there is one HD cable channel you must have.
- hackerssidekick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can just install LinuxMCE as I see it. It will install the kde packages as needed...should be easy peasy
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@poster "Any idea when that technology will be available (is cablecard 2.0 that technology)?"
It's cablecard 1.0 technology, but it's limited such that the no OS will support Cable card unless it is a Cable Labs "approved" read: very expensive PC. One just came out, check Digg. It was more money than it's worth.
Translation: Cable companies are screwing us. Other than Tivo and your cable company, there will probably never be a HD DVR. Hopefully the hackers can resolve this. - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the link to the Elisa Ubuntu packages.
- Gerz1219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So I already have Ubuntu Feisty installed on my MCE machine, but sorta gave up when I couldn't get MythTV to work properly. Do I just need to set it to boot into KDE instead of Gnome in order to install this, or is there more to it?
- Myomax65, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@greenstar
install kubuntu-desktop (installs kde and apps included in kubuntu), kde (all), kde-core (standard), or kdebase (minimal) using apt-get, aptitude, or synaptic
personally, i like kde-core and then add the apps i need rather than have all the bloat from kde or kubuntu - screwballl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is beta... new and improved... try it before talking bad
- futhark21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ryodoan:
I had similar experiences with a P4 2.8 and a MSI Tuner that is certified for WinMCE and had lots of problems I farted around with it for 2 weeks trying to get it to load and setup properly so I don't believe it is just the tuner you are using on the flip side NICU is right just be patient if you don't want to help the community that is fine albeit not very fair (from my point of view) but you wait for the next version and try again. That is what I am doing, I have 2 WinMCE boxes and love them but I want something more so I built this one from older parts to test out before jumping in full bore!
Long Story Short: Don't poo poo a good project just because the first version to come out doesn't work perfectly. How many times have you installed M$ products because they have issues yet it seems that that point is never mentioned. - lsatkins, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Can you record/watch HD tv on your tv through a pc running this program? That is the biggest reason I am still using the cable companies hd/dvr receiver, but I would love to get rid of it and use a pc to do the same thing.
- digghalo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hey, Cool! Perfect timing... I've built a MCE box but was unable to get ubuntu edgy installed. (issues with older kernel not liking my MB) Now I can use Kubuntu!!! Yes. Thank you Linux MCE.
- futhark21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@Screwballl:
Yes it's beta and I agree don't talk bad but Beta is nothing but a scapegoat lately
ie: Don't blame us for writing a bad program it's still in BETA.
I had issues with 1.0 and hated it but I am hopeful for 1.1 to be better. Got to love the Linux community for at least trying to get a good alternative to WinMCE and while MythTV is pretty good the claims that LinuxMCE has made sound better. - Chrysophrase, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Now if only I could install it on my PS3 :)
- Random23, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I think one of the problems a lot of people had (myself included) was that the video overpromised and underdelivered in a pretty big way.
That voice over painted such a great picture, and was so smug, that when people installed the program, they expected it to be at least a bit as good as promised.
That said, the TV and sound system that was used should have been a pretty big hint that at least the person who made the video wasnt into "home theater" so much. - enginbeering, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@hpstq
I think he was referring to the MCE part...
I hope your little tirade made you feel smart though. -
