(or maybe that would be considered a blessing?) - subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28If you have broadband and bopped around the site for like 30 seconds you would see there are 8 or 9 (probably more) and some were cute. Not as cute as the sticky Pamela Anderson poster on your wall but cute.
And I am such a jerk for even responding to such juvenile *****.... - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27The paradise we've all been looking for! Ahoy me mateys, 'tis time. Atlantis is ours.
update: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Women Fedora women?!! Are there two Internets or something and have they just merged? - AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Look, girls are still seen as something rare in tech, and we're often not taken seriously. I'm hard to offend, but some of the comments I've read here have managed to do just that. If a guy says he's in tech, people nod and it's all good. A girl mentions it and she's questioned, as if it'll be a miracle if she knows the difference between Apple and something known as an orange. For this reason, I try to avoid talking tech with people. It's tiring.
It should not be a big deal that there is a community group for women using Linux.
And it seems a lot of guys think one of two things about how we look. That we look like lesbian dogs, or some cute college girl with her hair in a ponytail wearing glasses with a hidden, but insatiable, sexual appetite.
I'm pretty sure that some of what's said it in jest, but can be a sensitive topic for a lot of women. We are just as capable if being techies as guys, but it's hardly encouraged.
And if just one more guy says something along the lines of, "Oh, you're a tech girl? Will you marry me?" I'm going to mentally scream.
Yes, girls use Linux. Yes, we are normal people. Yes, we are in a world dominated by men. But please quit with the ugly dog jokes, how what girls do in tech must be the reason for problems, etc.. You wouldn't want your daughters to feel they can't go into an industry because of what's said and the steriotypes, so help pave the way for it to be all right, okay? - rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18You know, Cody. You don't have to jack off to every woman you see on the internet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Since my wife and daughter also use Linux, we've known about it for some time.
I question the submitting of this story same as snuffulupagus does. But I'll Digg it anyway, because women might like to know about it. Sometimes I find that women, having gifts for communication that men seldom fathom, are better at explaining things to each other. Or maybe it's that men suck at explaining things to women? - shiria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13yes. I am a female and I use Linux, Digg, and I can write CSS. I spend more time on the internet than is healthy.
I'm also a gamer geek. And an anime geek. And I know plenty of other female geeks. We exist. We have always existed. How 'bout that? - Casestheorm, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19I'm going to mod you down. There.
And now I'm going to explain: the reason why discussing this isn't sexist is because they've gone and defined themselves as *women* who use *linux*. They haven't just joined another BB out there and started chatting and mentioned that they were chicks - they've actually defined themselves first and foremost by the fact that they are, indeed, female.
Commenting on them isn't sexist. Ranting on about sexist *****, on the other hand, is pathetic. - Tawni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@Celeron
I have been using Linux off and on since the mid 90s. Yes, women can use more than windows and apple. I have heard that some women even actually program.
Looks like we have escaped the kitchen and left the 1950's a long time ago.
Be afraid be very afraid. - Zenithan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Yes, posting a story that concerns one gender over another is obviously terrible. We shouldn't even distinguish between the genders, or even the fact that *gasp!* more men use Linux than women?
Please don't tell me that you also think that political correctness is the best thing ever to happen to the world. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11ok ok lets stop this pointless bickering.
The point is that the website LinuxChix.org is an indicator that Linux is spreading out of its former niche audience and that is cool. - gabogab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It isn't about posting the story, which is good, it is about putting the question marks (multiple ones, at that), and the fact that the word "women" was capitalized, that makes the post sexist (it suggests surprise, even bewilderment). If the title had been:
LinuxChix.org - A linux community of women
then it would have been an good post. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"Doesn't programming require a logical thinking process or a logical part of the brain? Is this some kind of joke or did someone invent the first emotionally retarded programming language?"
I understand youre joking, but the first compiler was written by a woman
http://www.sdsc.edu/ScienceWomen/hopper.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Why is it that the linux-chix website is served by IIS?
- vrioux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Maybe because the good-looking ones are trying to get as far as possible from jerks like you?
- rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That is a VERY good question.
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yes, they're on a site about women who use linux, but I don't think they joined because they wanted to be drooled over, or even just pointed at.
- leopardhunter, on 02/18/2009, -1/+7They really ought to ask for donations. I imagine that they would be able to raise enough for good bandwidth and more besides.
- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12guess women dont know how to get good servers/hosting
- jones20992, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8this is what the world needs more of sexy chicks with sexy gentoo boxes lol ....would a female distro rename bitchx to ***** ?
- shiria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7well, ya know... sometimes it's a little creepy when you say "hey, I'm a geek" and people like Disease say "will you marry me?" No offense intended, but it happens a lot, surprisingly enough. Sigh.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, a lot of communities aren't all that inviting for women. Maybe that's part of why us she-geeks are hidden...? - Disease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wait, girls on the internet? Madness!
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6 @AriaStar==I was the first fem-defender (sort of) back when the thread was new. Any female who ventures into this domain of geeks/wackos/trolls/comedians/recent ex-cons/career criminals/clueless doofuses/recovering addicts etc and expects to be treated "like a lady" is silly.
You are just being treated like we treat each other. You want to be treated like a person not a gender---guess what? That's exactly what you'll get here. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Let's face it........
99.9% of the people here on Digg posting that "Linux chicks are ugly" most likely wouldn't have a chance with them any way. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Really? The header read:
Server: Zope/(Zope 2.6.4 (source release, python 2.1, linux2), python 2.2.3, linux2)
I don't know about you, but that is definitely NOT IIS. - squirrelza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This site is struggling. It's not 100% down yet, but it will be soon
If you just want to see the frontpage, http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/LinuxChix_org_A_linux_community_of_WOMEN/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7those girls are "YUM"
(linux joke) - shiria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, I'm average weight, and college-age. And I'm in an rpg club with 20+ female members. and an anime club with about 15+ female members. We're everywhere. (cue creepy music)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'm a woman and I certainly do know how to write HTML. In fact, XHTML. Thanks. I'm even at a technical institute.. geez, what is this world coming to?! (RIT physics major)
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I bet it's like how all the "women" on EQ (old school) and WoW are men still living in their parents' basement.
- DavidDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I like how the woman who invented the compiler hoped that eventually "the programmer may return to being a mathematician."
I don't think she was counting on the invention of myspace, however... - Sp1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'd be APT to GREP one of those lookers, via SSH that is!
- Arisu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Okay now I believe it:
Most men _really_ are stupid! - lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually... by creating this type of website (a place where other women that use linux can gather) they are trying to get attention, mainly the attention of other women who are using linux. The fact that they're getting the male digg members attention doesn't detract from that.
In fact I would think it would be good. THere are female digg users and if one out of 20 digg members mention this to a female linux user, that's new members for them right there. - valhenson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Good news, the LinuxChix website is back up. We had a number of... mis-optimizations that limited our page serves to about, oh, 1 per second - which was fine until today! Enjoy the site, and thanks for the traffic,
-VAL - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Most the men posted on here are just annoyed that a lot of these women are kernel hackers or devs on important projects and have likely forgotten more about computers than most of them (including myself) know. It makes a lot of men insecure when a woman is stronger in a 'mans' field than they are. Of course men act to insecurity loudly generally hence the juvenile responses here.
Why is it such a suprise that girls are interested in computers and have setup their own society where they can avoid the generic and tired jokes that tend to do the rounds. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think the site is women only but is more dedicated to increasing the number of women in Linux. If you had actually looked for 2 seconds you would have seen that though.
- el_taco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ummm... yeah.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Women use Linux? When did hell freeze over?!"
~June 1999
http://web.archive.org/web/19990829013104/http://www.linuxchix.org/index.html - Desidarius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What!? Girls can't use linux! They'll turn it all pink and frilly and get cooties all over it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm not as geeky as you, but I do know my way around technology (haha) and I don't like anime.. well, maybe Sailor Moon and Pokemon when I was younger. I'm skinny, and I'm a college freshman. And.. and.. *sigh* I'm addicted to Facebook.
- CuCullin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Precisely.
I found out about this through a notable KDE supporter, Celeste Paul. There are a number of women not only using computers, but in the F/LOSS world. My gf uses linux, since I don't use Windows in my home. Her dad is a coder, and while he is knowledgable and uses linux, she learned how to use it because she felt like it. She neither codes, nor knows how to properly use MS Word - and yet, she fires up my machine, pulls up konqueror, opens kopete, so on. - Botrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's this kind of segregation that perpetuate women in tech as still beeing an issue.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Is anyone going to start one where only men can join?
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Is this what the old ladies with the Red Hats are all about?
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's not really shocking... I don't know that many girls that like tech (it's just not their thing, generally you could say that girls are more into biology and journalism and law and stuff like that) but I do know a few who are at least a bit more literate than most (none of them use linux of course). Anyway there's one "chick" that should be pretty famous in the linux world at the moment - Quinnstorm, the creator of Beryl (aka. Compiz-quinn).
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That explains why compiling a program is such a pain in the ass (I kid)
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hello ladies!
Kidding, totally kidding. - thenps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This kind of ***** kills me. It's like every Disney movie for the last 5 years. Some girl wants to do something and everyone freaks out. "A GIRL CAN PLAY SOCCER?!" It's embarrassing that this sort of thing is notable. Yes, women can use computers, some of them, it turns out like Linux. Anyone who's surprised by this is a moron.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No but to be fair Men do treat each other like *****. I think its a different culture in that respect. Men can throw punches, insult each others parents, make remarks about each others sisters and make personal attacks on each others sexuality and just have a nice calm chat about it over a drink in a few days time. As a result we can make derisory comments about each other as a joke.
I think women are far less forgiving in this respect. They tend to remember things said in the heat of the moment when peoples true feelings are scewed beyond meaning by extraordinary conditions.
Not that either case is a generic of women or men. People are individuals and should be treated of such, its just a tendancy to see such characteristics in both in quite a lot of cases.
Still no excuse for some of the rampant sexism displayed here. People seem to be offended or maybe scared by this site for some reason. -
