- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The GP2X is in no way even going to compete with the PSP or even the GBA or DS. It's marketed as an open source write yer own code system. It will see very little mainstream software support but it will see tons of emulators, PC game source ports, and original home brew games.
The emulation alone makes it the best handheld on the market though. NES and Genesis games blow the ***** out of the DS and PSP 100 times over in my opinion. It will be my next handheld.
Some clarification about the machine needs to be made though. This is not technically the successor to the original GP32. It is made by a company comprised of former employees that got fed up with GamePark and went off solo calling the new company GamePark Holdings. The real GamePark does have a so called "PSP killer" in the works though called the XGP. The XGP will be marketed as a commercial none home brew machine and attempt to compete with Sony and Nintendo.
Some early specs of the XGP:
Screen 480 by 272, 12 million colors, 4 inch TFT LCD.
Main CPU ARM920T 200 MHz
OS Updated GPOS
Graphics Accelerator 1 million polygon per second (OpenGL-ES supported)
Sound 64Polys 44.1 kHz, 16 bit sound
Network WiFi (802.11 b/g)
NAND Flash Memory 64MB
RAM 64Meg DDR SDRAM (200 MHz)
Storage SD card
Battery Li-Ion
Features TV-Out - slaguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry dudes, but I have one of these, (have a GP32 as well), and it is no PSP killer.
Its not that its a bad machine, its good, but bugs rules, and you need quite a lot of knowledge to get games going on it. You need to upgrade the firmware out of the box, and not all SD cards work (so thats a pain).
But past that its a killer emulation runner.
Its a bit like the creative vs the Ipod Vid. The creative may be a better machine, but the ipod has that simple ease of use (although limited). Sometimes being flexible does not equal better. - LawnGnome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People have been talking about the gamepark for months now. It won't kill off the PSP because of lack of retail games.
- chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4But just like Linux, is anyone going to make games for it?
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2infernoclan: one word: laptop. :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It won't kill the PSP, not at all--but it's always been better than it. The first, GP32, was a haven for all things hackified, emulified, and media center-ified, before there was such a thing.
This article wouldn't have gotten flamed if it wasn't dubbed the 'psp killer.' - ThatDurtyBoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems pretty decent piece of tech gone wrong.... Should of had a couple of Usb ports on it .. one for wireless and one for a small usb HD or Just Put a Hard Drive or Memory Card in it. Plus there is the whole Game Thing. Let me explain The philosophy of most people .... If it is Free it is Sh*t, or it gonna be hard to use. Not that I Believe that but most people I meet seem to think so ... Try this, Ask a stranger if they would rather have Linux OS Or Mac's OS X ? how many people want OS X more than Linux OS ? My Point is People are STUPID and want to GIVE money away. But I am off track. and I Think this has Real potential but will Fail before it gets to be a product I will Buy.
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow...i can't believe this story made it to the front page!! nothing i submit ever makes it to the front page...
okay, now granted, i did go a little trendy and call this thing a "killer"...maybe it isn't.
personally, i would still buy one. why? because it caters to everything i would want in a portable device, it plays movies, music, it can be used to store data, and it plays retro video games...the only kind of games that I play on a regular basis anymore...
don't knock a product just because it doesn't have mass appeal...niche markets can do quite nicely for themselves, and possibly break into the mainstream if given the opportunity and time...just look at Apple, or look at the recent developments with Linux, look at Nintendo versus Sony and Microsoft. Independant music vs. Mainstream Pop.
oh, and BTW...will you people please STOP BITCHING ABOUT STORIES BEING OLD NEWS!!!!!
not everyone has a social calendar vacant enough to merit surfing RSS feeds every freakin' day!! I mean JEEZUS H. CHRIST, do you realize who you sound like?!?! No? well you sound like the Comic Store guy from The Simpsons....get a gawddam life, you silly webtards!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a nice idea and all, but it won't be a "PSP killer". It'll never reach the publicity that the PSP has.
- Atom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When will hardware developers learn that its not the hardware that matters, its the games.
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ooh...softsynths on a portable...me likey...the one thing i miss about windows is Steinberg Reason...wish something like that was available for linux...
- buck09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, it does EVERYTHING a PSP does, well, umm, execpt play PSP games...
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1- MAME emulator using the 0.34 official version who can support 904 games.
- PSX Emulator
- PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16 Emulator
- Gameboy, Gameboy color Emulator.
Etc. etc.
Games look cool (wolfenstein, doom I & II, duke nukem, etc.) and video capabilities is nice, as is the price. Take notice of the same native resolution with the vPod. - cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what a joke. That is as bad as Tiger Electronic's .Com (.Bomb)
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's cool and I've seen it pop up many times. It won't kill of the PSP.
- tktk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Early reports suggested that the build quality was bad. I had a pre-order with Lik-Sang and they sent me a report about it and giving an option to cancel. I decided to cancel until I hear better news about build quality
- nadnerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1screen resolution is important for small devices. It's less than the psp but the same as the ipod, and the size is smaller than the psp and larger than the ipod.
size resolution
psp 4.3" (16:9) 480x272
ipod 2.5" 320x240
gp 3.5" 320x240 - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say this is all that great, and I'm a Linux user. Just because something runs Linux doesn't mean it's much better, take alook at the CPU, 200 MHz. Most standard Linux apps now adays will take more than 200 MHz to run. the video is far behind the psp. This is nice for snes and such, but beyond that, useless. I do however like the ebook reader idea, just not for 100+ dollars.
- robot_shadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It won't kiss PSP because it won't be as well known and there won't be the big names in games for it. I would definately buy one. I wouldn't use it for the games, I just want the media player. I hope more devices like this start comming up.
- Pharoah6905, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have three things i'd like to say:
A. i dont know about a "hell" of a lot cheaper
B. Who is going to create an incredible game for a system in which the user has control over the OS and can create ways to hack the system (no pun intended) and get games for free. We already see this with the xbox, psp, and xbox(unhackabler)360, and those systems were closed out to the public imagine wat would happen if it became this easy. all the games would be crappy because the creaters wouldnt want a game that could make millions of dollars, for a system that would allow it to be pirated easily.
C. I think roger chang might have mentioned this on a twit episode about a month and a half ago - drysz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry this doesn't hold a candle to the PSP. On the other hand I would probably buy one of these as well for fun.
- Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is indeed an incredible machine, but it will never "kill" the PSP due to the fact that it will not have native brand-name games. There are no developers currently backing the system to make it a "killer".
The system will only appeal to geeks, that's it. The geeks who have backgrounds in developing software. For the people who cannot, it's just a media player.
I also believe that there is a lack of wifi, therefore useless as a networking device. Personally, I'll be sticking to my PSP, which can also run homebrew software. - sankethkatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can put emulators on the psp with homebrew
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only one problem when comparing this to the PSP: It doesn't have all of those great games that the PSP has, and WILL have in the future. (lets not pretend that this gamepark thing will have good games, besides emulators).
Oops, i think we forgot why we buy game machines. Oops, i think most of us are tech heads that wouldn't know a good game from our asses. - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya know it's true you can run home brew on the PSP... But it will NEVER be as good and as easy as it is on the GP2X. One system you have to hack and screw with strange swap methods and firmware down graders and all that crap. It's fine and all and it can be done but the GP2X encourages this right out of the box and does nothing to try and stop you. You just put an emulator on a flash card and play.
It's great how bad topic titles create negative press for an outstanding product by making claims on it that it was never intended for. - darincm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not a PSP killer unless developers are on board. Until then its a toy
- h3adstr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been checking this out for a while now. Its great for developers because it comes with an SDK and stuff, and its pretty damn powerful too. Dual Core processor, 400 mhz. I don't think it has a very good graphics processor though, does it support 3D games? Anyway, digg for linux lol (cool 500th and omg this got 500+)
- kashrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea, ugly packaging.
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HUH whats going on...
its got 422 diggs in 15 seconds :/
screenshot http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8041/huh1jt.jpg - NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mines in the mail. I should get it next Wednesday, hopefully.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's nice, but ugly as hell
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When the markeing forumla is:
"industry-leading product"+"Killer"
the product usually dies a quick death. See: iPod Killer. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ugly. That thing is a piece of a crap and will never kill a PSP
- Xtrem3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eww, battery powered, and I can't imagine many leading devlopers would want to devlop on a open source system..
- DJPandemonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this was extremely cool when I found out about it on Digg a few months ago.
- DuFace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.Gp32x.com
There are alot of developers on that site. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"it dosent have any good games for it" neither does the psp.......
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not a "PSP-killer" by any means, but still cool~
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://gp32z.com/gp2xinfo.html
I was looking at one of these earlier. I wish it had a wireless.
but what I was thinking of putting some softsynths/drums on it.
that would be cool as fuk!! - pacogozalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No WIFI, no LI-ION, no Deal !
- metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool but ugly
- etnin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not even close. I can't stand sony but the psp itself is awesome. too bad they crippled it.
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to ugle.
+ digg - fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this thing is on my wish list... awesome
forget the psp comparison... what if i just don't want to buy something from Sony, and think the Nintendo stuff is for little kids?
i always advocate paying for open source related products because it helps the OSS community build. When there is more incentive, developers are motivated to code, and that creates a trickle down effect which helps this whole 'grassroots' slash-digg-geek type crowd grow. - tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty cool, but it's old news
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yeah baby :)
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd buy one so fast if it had wifi.... but since it doesnt, i'll wait for the GP3x with WiFi
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0buy a ds and a ds movie player gosh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0666 diggs..... mwahahahahaha!
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but it *Does* have usb, you might be able to hook up a wireless dongle.
