realtechnews.com — Imagine a PSP type system that could do everything a PSP can, but on a Linux-based platform...oh, and it costs a hell of a lot less too...only $179USD!!!!

- LawnGnome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People have been talking about the gamepark for months now. It won't kill off the PSP because of lack of retail games.
- chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4But just like Linux, is anyone going to make games for it?
- mendicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That will be a major drawback.
But for some of the older gamers in the crowd, a good portable system with a NES/SNES/Genesis emulator and some games would probably be worth its weight in gold. - nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hell, i'd buy one for that price. and yeah, i think it'll really win over the retrogaming crowd!
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://gp32z.com/gp2xinfo.html
I was looking at one of these earlier. I wish it had a wireless.
but what I was thinking of putting some softsynths/drums on it.
that would be cool as fuk!! - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but it *Does* have usb, you might be able to hook up a wireless dongle.
- kashrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea, ugly packaging.
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ooh...softsynths on a portable...me likey...the one thing i miss about windows is Steinberg Reason...wish something like that was available for linux...
- p3on, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i preordered one for xmas from lik-sang ^_^
- argyleipodder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0personally i'll stick with nintendo's ds. thanks. but this could be neato.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0emulator heaven! im guessing that what he ment by psp killer that it plays emus and any video...cuz it seems thats the only thing psp is good for.
- Monkeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So, the geeks at GfG are wondering… have consumers finally got feed up with proprietary systems such as the PSP and want the freedom an open-source system such as the GP2X provides?"
Nope. - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0dupe, old news, blah blah blah. i remember digging a story just like this one a couple of months ago.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OLD but dugg, so hopefully ppl will make games for it
- buck09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, it does EVERYTHING a PSP does, well, umm, execpt play PSP games...
- stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hrmmm... I wonder what kind of commuity support this thing will get.
- Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it doesnt play PSP games for now :)
- Polly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh *****, Tux Racer on the go! Sign me the ***** up!
- superspak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome, i might buy one and stick all of the emulators and roms i have on my computer onto it :)
- tktk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Early reports suggested that the build quality was bad. I had a pre-order with Lik-Sang and they sent me a report about it and giving an option to cancel. I decided to cancel until I hear better news about build quality
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Yeah, it does EVERYTHING a PSP does, well, umm, execpt play PSP games... "
there are no psp games the psp dont even play them XD - Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't have the same 3D acceleration capabilities as the PSP which means it was reallly geared towards playing emulated NES games ect.
- infernoclan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If it is internet enabled, it will be a hackers paradise. Portable hacking...
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2infernoclan: one word: laptop. :P
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The GP2X is in no way even going to compete with the PSP or even the GBA or DS. It's marketed as an open source write yer own code system. It will see very little mainstream software support but it will see tons of emulators, PC game source ports, and original home brew games.
The emulation alone makes it the best handheld on the market though. NES and Genesis games blow the ***** out of the DS and PSP 100 times over in my opinion. It will be my next handheld.
Some clarification about the machine needs to be made though. This is not technically the successor to the original GP32. It is made by a company comprised of former employees that got fed up with GamePark and went off solo calling the new company GamePark Holdings. The real GamePark does have a so called "PSP killer" in the works though called the XGP. The XGP will be marketed as a commercial none home brew machine and attempt to compete with Sony and Nintendo.
Some early specs of the XGP:
Screen 480 by 272, 12 million colors, 4 inch TFT LCD.
Main CPU ARM920T 200 MHz
OS Updated GPOS
Graphics Accelerator 1 million polygon per second (OpenGL-ES supported)
Sound 64Polys 44.1 kHz, 16 bit sound
Network WiFi (802.11 b/g)
NAND Flash Memory 64MB
RAM 64Meg DDR SDRAM (200 MHz)
Storage SD card
Battery Li-Ion
Features TV-Out - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because as we all know the PSP is the pinnacle of portable gaming...err I mean portable movie players.
- Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe it does NOT include Wifi..

# 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty - cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what a joke. That is as bad as Tiger Electronic's .Com (.Bomb)
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it possibly could have been a psp killer if it was made by somekind of popular company like microsoft maybee and acctually had some good games for it. But untill that happens, there is no way that any one will "kill" anything from sony. I know they suck pretty much, but it is just life, retards still buy a hell of a lot of crap from them
- robot_shadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It won't kiss PSP because it won't be as well known and there won't be the big names in games for it. I would definately buy one. I wouldn't use it for the games, I just want the media player. I hope more devices like this start comming up.
- lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a list of games/emulators currently available for this? Any word on how it performs?
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think alot of you took title to literal.im guessing the title is relating to the media and emulator options.
not actually going head to head with it - Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is indeed an incredible machine, but it will never "kill" the PSP due to the fact that it will not have native brand-name games. There are no developers currently backing the system to make it a "killer".
The system will only appeal to geeks, that's it. The geeks who have backgrounds in developing software. For the people who cannot, it's just a media player.
I also believe that there is a lack of wifi, therefore useless as a networking device. Personally, I'll be sticking to my PSP, which can also run homebrew software. - w1f1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO 3D and this has been out for bout 4 months.... just not for sale
- nadnerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1screen resolution is important for small devices. It's less than the psp but the same as the ipod, and the size is smaller than the psp and larger than the ipod.
size resolution
psp 4.3" (16:9) 480x272
ipod 2.5" 320x240
gp 3.5" 320x240 - drysz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry this doesn't hold a candle to the PSP. On the other hand I would probably buy one of these as well for fun.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This was posted a few months (or week, correct me if im wrong) ago so, no digg.
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If it was truly like Linux.. it wouldnt cost a dime =)
- tempest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone consider using this as a base for a car-puter?
- Dingoaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It already has Quake on it
http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/2xQuake - CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the 2nd Gen of a long-known emulator-machine king. However I still prefer my psp, especially as seeing as how they are working on a custom firmware that has all the security of 1.5 (minimal), and all the features of atleast 2.0, hopefully can just be added on as new releases come out, I'm currently running 2.0 so I can still play gta and have snes emulation goodness.
- sankethkatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can put emulators on the psp with homebrew
- darincm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not a PSP killer unless developers are on board. Until then its a toy
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya know it's true you can run home brew on the PSP... But it will NEVER be as good and as easy as it is on the GP2X. One system you have to hack and screw with strange swap methods and firmware down graders and all that crap. It's fine and all and it can be done but the GP2X encourages this right out of the box and does nothing to try and stop you. You just put an emulator on a flash card and play.
It's great how bad topic titles create negative press for an outstanding product by making claims on it that it was never intended for. - Shikkyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only one problem when comparing this to the PSP: It doesn't have all of those great games that the PSP has, and WILL have in the future. (lets not pretend that this gamepark thing will have good games, besides emulators).
Oops, i think we forgot why we buy game machines. Oops, i think most of us are tech heads that wouldn't know a good game from our asses. - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say this is all that great, and I'm a Linux user. Just because something runs Linux doesn't mean it's much better, take alook at the CPU, 200 MHz. Most standard Linux apps now adays will take more than 200 MHz to run. the video is far behind the psp. This is nice for snes and such, but beyond that, useless. I do however like the ebook reader idea, just not for 100+ dollars.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, it does EVERYTHING a PSP does, well, umm, execpt play PSP games...
y would u want to play psp games ???????????? i have one, and i like my DS better - Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0".... you can run home brew on the PSP... But it will NEVER be as good and as easy.."
I'm sorry but the homebrew on the GPX will NEVER be as good as on the PSP. There are many programmers working on the PSP and they will be able to utilize the much more powerful specs to create better games and software. I really doubt the GPX will take off. - rusty_g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'll get one of these!!!
