"Mr. Carmony [of Linspire] asked a question, will Linux split in two factions? The answer is no. Some Linux distros will limp along a while and then die off, because they misunderstood what folks want when they choose GNU/Linux and FOSS. You can see that already. Red Hat, which refused to sign any such deal, is flourishing, for example. It’s not about code that “just works”. Apple offers that already. It’s the freedom. And we’ve proven willing to put up with some temporary frustration in order to get it. In time, FOSS will win, and all those proprietary codecs and everything else will be made available on pleasanter terms, because market share does that." - benanzo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Oh! This is the price of pissing off the community. I commend Ted Hagar for leaving Novell. He was a stand-up guy. But I can't help but be a little glad we won't have to deal with Carmony anymore, not after his blog post about how GPLv3 will destroy the Linux desktop. I think Linspire will fold within two years. They don't "get it" at the most fundamental level.
- jbus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28Good riddance... I'm sure the folks at Linspire are quite happy to no longer be associated with him. This guy is a total douchebag and the fact that he's involved in Mitt Romney's campaign further highlights what kind of jackass he is. It's also clear that his recent deal with Microsoft was more of an effort to sabotage the advancement of desktop Linux before he resigned, more than anything else.
- raynevandunem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16So who's succeeding him?
At first, with the launch of Freespire, I was thinking that he might have the ability to push their company into bigger areas; it seemed so with the announcement of CNR.com. Then things just started getting out of hand, with words flying about their deal with Microsoft (Linux being the anti-Windows and all).
Hopefully, the next CEO will find a niche for Linspire to fill. I suggest a "Linspire Studio", a repackaged, marketable version of Ubuntu Studio.
Good luck to Carmony, and to his successor. But why work for Mr. "Double Guantanamo"? - ptFoe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Romney? what a *****, good riddance for Linspire.
- Theli, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Now, lets just cross our fingers for Ballmer's resignation...
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16This is what you get when you turn to the Dark Side. Another disposable pawn of Emperor Billgatus of Borg.
I guess Mitt Romney is now Carmony's new master. - raseel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12No where in the article is the true reason for his leaving Linspire mentioned. I wonder what it could be .
(Sarcasm) - hungarianhc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12It's about friggin time. I used to intern for Linspire, back when it was Lindows. None of the execs had any idea what the hell Linux was about. They just were trying to figure out how to monetize it, and going in all the wrong directions. Goodbye and good riddance.
Can we just dissolve the distro and rent out that nice 3rd floor office space in La Jolla to somebody else please? - ferrell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Does anyone wanna buy my lifetime CNR membership?
Cheap. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12 Aw,our fingers will have turned to dust in the wind before monkey boy resigns.
Anyway, over the last several months,I've hung out on the freespire forums (After the Linspire forums were killed) and watched KC systematically alienate as many 'spire users as he could. (His philosophy appeared to be:"My way,or the highway.")
.Because of his daring people to make a better distro,Klikit was born.
Of course,KC just wouldn't let things go..He called the entire Linux user populous a bunch of high brow pirates...And then there was the ever so intelligent Microsoft deal.
By then, even those who still supported the 'spire were leaving.
Many folks who know nothing of the history are still there, but the best and brightest are long gone, some to Klikit, some to Ub',etc.
KC was the reason for many people to join up,who truly believed in the excellence of a really easy to use desktop Linux.
(Now,virtually every Linux distro out there is as easy to install and use as Linspire.)
But as the last several months progressed,KC revealed his true colors,so to speak and he became the reason for many of us to leave the 'spire and to take the side of the 'spire haters....In many cases,it was not so much 'spire haters as KC haters.
And now KC himself has also left the 'spire..How ironic...
I'm still using Freespire as I wait for Klikit to turn beta, then I'll be saying: "So long and thanks for the free CNR..."
It's a shame,a real shame...I'm willing to bet that he was given his walking papers, but KC being KC has to spin it to look otherwise...
So Linspire is on it's death bed now...And with Microsoft's teeth embedded in it's throat...I don't hold out much hope for this distro lasting much longer...But I could be wrong.
And it is a shame, as the 'spire could have been so much more than it turned out to be.
End of rant.
- livevil, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Carmony you ***** weasel bitch!
- jeff419, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Well, lets hope he's as good at destroying a political campaign as he is ***** up a distro.
- generalloy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Don't worry, I'm sure he cashed out well for all the damage he did to his own product.
- spucky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Is money the most important thing defining a persons worth?
- meteors, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Mitt Romney??
Good riddance!
-j - OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7
But why work for Mr. "Double Guantanamo"?
There's lots of people willing to do practically anything for easy $$$. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6 Hey now, don't insult weasels and female dogs by comparing them to KC!
- atrus123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Don't kid yourself Kevin, this was about Microsoft.
- ellisgl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Linspire is still around?
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Mitt Romney? What a pawn.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5 Ok,Linspire has responded:
http://forum.freespire.org/showthread.php?t=9626 - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The powers that be at Linspire have not even had the gonads to announce this on their own forum..
http://forum.freespire.org/
A member posted the info under "news." - Leofan7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I knew this guy was a looney! Working for Romney only proves it!
- LeeVal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4His company was a rip off anyway
- cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually, water would be more profitable (fresh water that is).
- HeyArnold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What's his next business venture?
Let me guess, he's going to try to sell air. - williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Let's see, from being a chair-throwing ape's bitch, to being a minion for a dude who wears secret underwear. A horizontal move, I guess.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Time will tell on that one.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Welcome to what you get when you buy-in to proprietory systems. Just be thankful they didn't own your data in obscure, undocumented file formats.
- williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yeah, and a dude with secret underwear will double the size of Guantanamo and make Bush' surveillance state look like paradise by comparison...
Oh. Wait. That could actually happen. - addicted68098, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They can't sell a name like Lindows it was the perfect name!
- Zuggy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Going to work for Romney might also be an attempt at trying to get the Linux community to build up an online following similar to the one that Ron Paul has. It's a bit far-fetched but possible.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2 yeah, people are never going to forget or forgive due to the Microsoft thing.
Anyway,he left a note at Linspire, which rather surprised me:

You wish! - PaulDrake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Money is the most important thing to Mormons like Romney and Carmony.
The LDS(tm) scum-scam-cult isn't building a mega-mall in downtown Salt Hick City, Utard for nothing.
http://www.lds-mormon.com/ - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Who cares?
- FKnight, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2No, but I think the point is that Mr. Carmony is a bit smarter at making money than a bunch of losers on Digg who think Microsoft is Satan Incarnate.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1I love Mitt!!!
Felt I had to say that considering typical 10 comments out of 10 are left wing on this friggen site... - iamlutheran, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0Just because he has more money than many of us will ever see does not make him a better or worse person than anyone else. Money does not buy happiness, nor where you go when you die and leave this world.
- FKnight, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4In 5 years, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Slackware will be a distant bad memory while Novell SuSE, Linspire, and Windows will rule the world.
At the same time, the folks at WINE will finally announce the availability of Wine 0.99999999967 with updated support for the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Installer. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -15/+0You haters don't have the millions he has so stfu.

What is Digg?
