- kingkilr, on 10/11/2007, -7/+48#1 should be terminal, burried :P
- esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33why are you listing the OSX/XP equivilants?
this is a list for the best ubuntu apps, not a list of ubuntu apps that make it the best os out there. - Salviati, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33@ xilon: {Most of these don't run on JUST GNU/Linux, and they're definitely not "Ubuntu applications". They are *nix applications (most run under *BSD etc as well)...Marked as inaccurate.}
RTFA: "While Ubuntu comes jacked with useful applications out of the box, there's a big selection of free, thriving Linux desktop software which matches or betters their Windows and Mac counterparts in terms of features..."
Of course these are Ubuntu applications. They are APPLICATIONS that run on UBUNTU! There are counterparts on other OS, but these programs are Free and Linux based. For those of us who use Ubuntu, this is a great list of applications to try out. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24As an Ubuntu user I found that list interesting. I know of all of those apps and have made an informed decision not to use any of them. Watch out for automatix or any other script that alters your sources.list. You will have significant problems when it comes time to update Ubuntu. I just did a clean install of Ubuntu ( the afforementioned issue ) and I was amazed at how NOT DIFFICULT it was to take care of the things that I thought I needed automatix or easyubuntu to take care of.
- dburanen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24Automatix is crap.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras is better. - BigManOnCampus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24Lifehacker continues to dissapoint me in their recommendations.
Eventually Compiz and Beryl will be re-integrating, so why mention only Beryl?
Automatix is unnecessary, completely unnecessary.
Doesn't Ubuntu Feisty come with Brightside? I seem to have a window identical to that one that lets me dictate the results of mouse gestures.
I did *not* have to install Samba separately from installing Feisty, so why mention it on a top-10 list? oh right, they need hits.
How often do people re-partition their hard drives? Honestly?? Now if you're a geek, you might do it 2-3 times a year. But the average Ubuntu user?? Give me a break, they just want it to work, it is not as much of a tinkerer's OS. (and it's not supposed to be)
Amarok is the only thing that deserves to be on that list, as it does not come with the default Ubuntu install, and it is brilliant. - Xanium4332, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Automatix is no longer needed with Feisty. If something like a codec is missing it'll just popup a messagebox asking you if you want to download+install it. Plus doesn't fsck up your upgrade path
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Wow a top ten list from LifeHacker.. Oh wait it's about Unbuntu you say? I cannot believe my eyes, this has never ever been done.
- ViperDaimao, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14From wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatix_%28software%29#Response
"Automatix is not recommended by the Ubuntu development team, which has criticised its content.[1] Some individual Ubuntu developers blamed Automatix 1 for breaking updates from Dapper to Edgy.[2][3] On November 2, 2006 Ubuntu CTO Matt Zimmerman said "I cannot recommend the use of this program, and systems where it has been used cannot be supported with a clean and official upgrade path."[4]" - Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Whew, so I wasn't the only one thinking that Amarok was the only app that should've been on that list.
- DarkJesus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Half of these are gnome apps and half are KDE. If someone was to install all of these, they would have to get a load of deps and would be left with a bloated system.
- Balla79, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12gparted is kinda like a free partition magic, only it doesn't work as well
-------------------------------------
Although I don't completely disagree, I would just like to say that from my experience gParted works a lot better if you are running it from a live-cd. Try: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10this list is garbage, Automatix is #1? how so? most of the stuff in it breaks your install. You can get most of everything from add/remove. Kopete better than pidgin?? i don't think so. I'm not sure you can call all of these "ubuntu" applications, more like linux applications
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12buried. should be "Top 10 Linux applications"
- Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Agreed. Seeing as these sorts of comments normally get burried, I'll point you all to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#head-8fa840b0f29ed7a927231cb640610777ca2d9904 . Automatix is useful for beginners and doesn't necessarily break anything, but it targets the specific group of users (beginners) who are least likely to be able to recover from a botched upgrade.
- mcm297, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I don't see vi anywhere on this top 10 list...
- zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5sudo make me-a-sandwich
- digitalarcanum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4fluxbox is the best window manager on the face of the earth.
- hikaricore, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6We at UGA ( Ubuntu Gamers Arena - gaming.gwos.org ) proudly and openly hate/think very little of automatix.
It may have had it's place in Dapper (somewhat) but was easily avoidable with simple google searching that some
"windows computer experts" are too lazy to bother with. - PaulRay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3VLC should definitely be on this list. It solves a multitude of compatibility problems.
- PaulRay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Bryan: Amarok runs great under Gnome, I'm using it right now.
Classic: Amarok will locate, download and display your album covers automatically, for one thing
It's highly configurable and is open source. All things iTunes can not claim.
But when it comes down to it, you choice of music player or OS for that matter is about what works for you. It really doesn't matter if anyone else thinks it's good as long as you do. I think everyone should use Linux (any flavor), but it doesn't make them wrong for using OSX or Window$, just a different set of needs and preferences. - Phlosten, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I thought it was a good list until I hit...Automatix! wtf? stay away from this trash your system application.
- cynicist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Because some people (like me) prefer to run QT applications in KDE and GTK applications in Gnome for a more consistent look/feel. And Firefox/Amarok are only a few clicks away with your distro's package manager, so I would consider them available in either.
- loconet, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8I love Ubuntu as much as anyone but since when are these "Ubuntu" applications?
- AstralSin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4i'm another guy who's gonna point out that these are general applications to all linuxes. and this list is kinda *****, imo. what about songbird, amarok, deluge, democracy tv, vlc, gimp, k3b, tribler, etc.? come on, lifehacker, get with the program!
- Balla79, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Quite right.
The whole purpose of Automatix is to make it easier for people who don't know what they're doing. On the other hand you shouldn't be using it if you don't know what you are doing, and if you know what you are doing, you don't need Automatix. In other words: It's crap for both novice and advanced users. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For people who do a lot of file manipulation I can't recommend Gnome Commander enough.
NE ( nice text editor ) is a great command shell based text editor, with drop down menus, and CUA (windows like ) keybindings. It is awesome for editing system files for those who don't want to use VIM or emacs - macewan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4inaccurate is too kind - this list is stupid
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3...except for Automatix. It's an Ubuntu/Mepis-only app, and Mepis is based on Ubuntu.
- Disease, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ATI + Beryl = T_T
- squirrel83, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5how many times a year must we look at this list?
- javaroast, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Agreed. Any time I see a headline from lifehacker I can bet it's going to be crap. If they put half the time into writing stories as they do to trying to make the perfect digg headline they might be worth reading.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3beryl will never be my default window manager, fluxbox + xcompmgr on this end
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1*yawn*
Yet more "Top 10" spam from mklopez and lifehacker. - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3this list is just aweful besides amarok, nothing too amazing there.
- ClassicQ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This isn't a perfect list, but it's definitely better than what Lifehacker put together (in no specific order) MEncoder/Mplayer, Moblock, Ktorrent, Wine, Myth TV, K3B, Amarok, Streamtuner, Beryl/Compiz, Vi. [Hmm --- it didn't take me any effort or time to compose my response, nice to see that Lifehacker puts so much *effort* into their blog posts - maybe they're on a creative break.
- Ashex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2gparted is basically a gtk front-end for the parted program. I personally prefer qparted (parted with a qt front-end), it just seems to function better for me.
- lengau, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I said available OOTB. Which means installed OOTB.
We need a bit of work to make the apps more cross-environment compatible.
IIRC, the KDE libraries are only loaded once (same with GNOME libraries). If we were to make a standard that we can change the settings of the preferences, it would be good. For example, if one runs a KDE app inside GNOME, the settings menu gets removed and "Configure $appname" gets moved to Edit->Preferences. If we make semiunified themes, it wouldn't be a problem.
That said, for those coming from Windows/Mac, the apps are so different in their interfaces, a difference between KDE and GNOME would go unnoticed. - AstralSin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2i see amarok now, oops, but still there are lots of things missing
- vh1`, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wow, wicd (mentioned in the comments FTA) is pretty interesting. the development version allows you to use static/dhcp IPs on a per-network basis
it's a little weird how it installs to /opt though - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Uh... not at all. Gmail checker? Kopete??!?!
- mwosh, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3http://lifehacker.com/photogallery/Lifehacker-Top-10-Ubuntu-Apps/1960145
Helloooo Gloria... - lengau, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Some of these (Katapult and Amarok, for example) are available in Kubuntu. I don't understand why Ubuntu ONLY contains GTK apps and Kubuntu ONLY Qt Apps.
Personally, I use Konqueror as my web browser. However, I think that Kubuntu should come with Firefox (not necessarily as the default browser, but just available), because many more people already know about Firefox.
I also think that Amarok should be available OOTB on Ubuntu, because it's the best music library app out there (IMHO, but also in the opinions of many others). - Xilon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I don't think any Ubuntu user is worried about bloat...
- symx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0most of them run pretty well on other OS like FreeBSD, Kopete, Amarok, Katapult are kde apps and kde works on freebsd, gmailchecker is a gnome applet so it runs wherever gnome runs. Not to say that samba exists since before some of the ubuntu users were born.
- sirhomer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1gparted & samba already comes with Ubuntu.
