- islingt0ner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Thinkpad = Awesome.
- Salviati, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18This is more good news for all Linux users, not just Lenovo or Suse fans. We all benefit from the exposure and credibility that accompanies news like this.
From the Article: "Whether they are running Ubuntu, SLED, or some other distribution, the availability of Linux preinstallation from mainstream vendors increases the visibility of the operating system and gives component makers an incentive to provide better Linux drivers and hardware support." - nickdot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I am still waiting for pre-installed laptops with Ubuntu in Europe by the major players. However I applause any partnership between linux and hardware vendors.
- samboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Dangit, I already got a Dell laptop with Linux! But, I'm glad to see Lenovo support Linux 100%; my last laptop was a Thinkpad that I have been very pleased with and my next laptop will probably be a Thinkpad also. Hopefully Lenovo will have an X series (the really small and light Thinkpads) with Linux preinstalled by then.
- QuantumParadox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Now, if they make a Linux based Tablet!

We need a better way to add extra links to a story. - HyperJack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What a novel idea.
- potterboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4X61t running linux, please? Might give me reason to upgrade my T42.
- earlycj5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just checked, yup, all partitions automounted including the second internal hard drive.
Repository system doesn't suck, the software you were using may have though. I have no complaints about Smart other than it's slow when compared to Apt. - KataLieb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Great! Now I can finally buy a laptop ... WHEN they start selling em in Europe too!
Its very near bloody impossible to get a Linux or No-OS laptop where I live presently. So no new laptop until its possible. I aint paying the Microshaft tax, rather take a second hand lappy. Do the right thing, Dell and buddies, Europe next! - Shadowman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4So you can submit stories about law firms switching from Windows to SLED...

...but if a vendor offers anything other than Ubuntu you get out all the Microsoft conspiracy and boycott Novell *****. Can you be any more hypocritical? You claim to be a "Linux advocate" but I think you are just another Ubuntu fanboy. Why didn't Microsoft "whack" and "hit" Dell? WTF???? - icepack12, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4are there anymore SUSE fans?
and this is nice to see. - zeejay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wan't that before Microsoft had the idea to penalize OEMs (by raising the price for Windows OEM licenses) for also selling systems with anything other than Windows installed? Blame MS for the dearth of choice, not the OEMs.
- martalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Absolutely right. All the distros are essentially running ont he same kernel. If the hardware is running GPL drivers, then any recent distro will work just fine.
- Shadowman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is more great news for GNU/Linux. SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 is awesome. It wouldn't surprise me if HP offered SLED 10 preinstalled soon too.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Future deals are not possible now but the GPLv3 doesn't impact deals that are already in existence. There are good legal reasons for this but what Novell presented was a potential threat rather than a current one. GPLv3 does stop that potential threat from ever being realised and that's good enough.
- mheath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I only hope this means that we'll finally get docking station support in Linux that actually works without making the kernel crash.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Yes because a Novell OS is so much worse than Windows. The Novell thing was well overstated and isn't an issue any more in any case. All in all it proved to be a largely positive thing, what we gained was more than what we lost.
- tippmann1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1just wait for the intergrated phone...
- madrona, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have a T60 running SLED10 at work, use it in the dock 95% of the time, and have not experienced any problems.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Comments not good enough then?
Perhaps there should be a convention where the poster of the article takes up the first post and labels it 'post your links here'. Then all is well.
Doesn't need extra coding, it's a problem that could be solved by Digg users directly. - kaph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Didn't digg recently strike an advertising deal with Microsoft? What does this mean for you?
- KoZo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This should have been news like 2 years ago. I used to work for a company that test the then IBM Thinkpads and now Lenovo using SuSE Linux.
- zeroooooooooooo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1My friend has an x60 with Ubuntu installed. According to him, you lose a lot of the tablet functionality by switching from Windows.
I type happily on my T61 (with XP). - rmxz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The old IBM Thinkpads with Linux pre-installed by IBM in '04 were awesome:
http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.pl?sid=01/09/04/0135236
Haven't tried one since then. - canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0My big complaint about SuSE: it doesn't automount partitions on startup (Used SuSE 10.2), and repository system sucks (Using Yast I got stucked in an infinite loop trying to add new rep servers). But.. anyway, hooray for linux and Suse.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Can someone detail me on if novell is safe or not still after the deals with microsoft? It makes me a little worried that in the future they might sell out to microsoft again or something. Possible?
Anyways, I guess it's great news. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1They try, but they don't always get their way.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3How much money does Microsoft make from sales of such laptops (never mind the O/S!)? Lenovo already certifies Fedora and Ubuntu for the series. Hopefully they will preload these too (no 'Microsoft tax').
Mark Shuttleworth (yesterday):
"That's extortion and we should call it what it is," he said. "To say, as Ballmer did, that there is undisclosed balance sheet liability, that's just extortion and we should refuse to get drawn into that game.

Shuttleworth calls Microsoft's actions "racketerring".

“We should whack them [Dell over Linux dealings], we should make sure they understand our value.”
–Paul Flessner, Senior Vice President, Server Applications Unit
Lenovo offered Linux preinstalls last year, but probably changed its mind after Microsoft had threatened to retaliate. - BryanUT, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1That news sure didn't help the stock price today. Tell me again why I am holding to those shares?
- rmxz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Amazing how far backwards we've come.
Back in '04 we've had IBM Thinkpads with pre-installed Linux including things like licensed DVD playback which seems lacking in the current Linux Dells.
http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.pl?sid=01/09/04/0135236
And Dell had Linux on all it's laptop lines in 2000
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66081
And today we're excited that we get a couple models of Dells and Novell-who-sold-out-to-Microsoft on Lenovos! Saddest thing is that over the past few years our expectations have sunk so low we're happy about it. - fourcontact, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0crazzzy,,,
- GruntGrunt, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Linux = FTW
Thinkpad = Stinkpad - geehossiphats, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Right on the $ bro!
- mugs, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Boo, Novell/SUSE is in bed with M$, I would never run a distro that made a deal with M$. There are plenty of others out there, that are "pure", and it is very easy to install it on any laptop you get.
- crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -12/+5Too bad it's Novell. More like Traitorvell, amirite??
