- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24There's no longer a need to manually update the master server, just update the client. I play this game nearly every day and it is definitely one of the best free games I've played. It does a great job of re-creating the Tribes spirit with similar weapons and physics. A few key differences that set Legends apart from conventional FPS games are the physics and the weapons. Unlike traditional 'run, run, jump, strafe, shoot...' games, Legends gives you a jetpack allowing vertical boosts, and allows you to "ski" across vast terrains in seconds. The explosive weapons require high precision timing and forethought to be effective. Because of these differences, Legends tends to frustrate new players. I assume they think it's like every other game, however, you cannot expect to enter a game you never played before and start pwning the vets. If you download this and have never played Tribes before, be patient, it's not an easy game, but you adapt quickly.
You'll also want to download BT Mappack to avoid waiting for map downloads (which take forever, map transfers in-game are capped at 3.5KB/s) Get it from http://hosted.filefront.com/lpbbear and follow the instructions packed in the zip.
Also get the Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 voice packs which adds 15 make and 15 female voices
Tribes 1 (jVoicepack): http://files.filefront.com/jVoicePackzip/;5183310;;/fileinfo.html
Tribes 2 (KnochenT2): http://www.morph21.de/ftp/KnochenT2Binds.zip
All .unf files go in ~/.legends/legends (or /usr/games/legends/legends if you want them to be system-wide)
Check it out, It's a fun game. - Aldaron07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Tribes... Easily one of the top five greatest PC FPS games of all time.
Can't wait to try this. Even made on the Torque engine? Definitely dugg. - PrezKennedy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's a good game. Not quite as good as Tribes 2 was, but it handles almost the same way. Counterstrike and Battlefield 2 veterans may as well run crying back to mommy now because you'll easily get whipped in this game.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Cool. A game that doesn't suck for Linux!
Tribes is a fun series. Very underrated in many circles. - OpticalLiam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Tribes isn't dead, no, it will never die!
*convinces himself* - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10halo/2 is trash
- springah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9grr, map download caps suck
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7On the subject of free games in a similar vein, check out Tremulous. It's an FPS based on Q3 however there is a really neat strategy angle to it as well. I guess the thinking man's FPS.
http://tremulous.net/ - jpric18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For those that played Tribes know that: Tribes >> Tribes 2
- Slagar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not "for" linux, it supports linux, along with windows. Not only that, linux support came AFTER windows support. Also, its based on the Torque engine, which is not open source.
- Emerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Tribes(1) was the best of the series. Hands down. Possibly the best game I have ever played. I still find myself trying to find a proper replacement.
Tribes 2 was plagued with bugs, Sierra was pulling stupid moves hiring and firing dev teams.
Vengeance is good, but is just not the same game. I find myself bored after a map or two of play.
Legends is great effort and I enjoy the odd game. Doesn't seem to have that same hook tribes did.
Legions looks good but may never really see the light of day for sometime, Garage games was to submit the work to the community so until other teams are formed and committed to working on a project I wouldn't get your hopes up too high there.
Shazbot! - Tanuko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nice to see a good down-loadable free game. I'll definitely check it out.
- MoonDogAFO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Starsiege: Tribes, Renegades mod... railgun sniping ruled!
Who remembers the Spriggan's World All for One server?
I still have my install disks for each of the Tribes installments. I even remember when Tribes community members began working on Legends to try and keep the Tribes dream alive. I admire them for their dedication, and will give this another try tonight when I get home from work. - fac3less, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you really want to play a wicked game -- savage is downloadable for free directly from the developers.
S2 Games offer the full Win32 installer for Savage: The Battle for Newerth as a free release, the first-person shooter/real-time strategy game hybrid from a few years ago paves the way for its upcoming sequel. The game is available on the Savage Downloads Page and mirrored on 3D Gamers and Gamer's Hell.

Amazing game. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the forums should have the links to the mappacks, download them from there instead of from the server. Its much faster that way.
- cyroxos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It is a very good game, some of the mods for it are really amazing.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I tried downloading this for my winxp machine but I keep getting install errors, help?!?!?!
- AnimalMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it uses the Torque engine, why can't they make a MacOSX release? Is it just the lack of hardware access, or what? Is there any official word on that?
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4damnit, vista cant play any opengl games, now i feel like using linux 3 years ago =(
- got-haggis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6lol tribes vengeance lol
- deimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wish I could've gotten into T1. I got into Tribes a little while after T2 was out, and just could never get used to T1 :( T2 classic was very, very nice though...oh how I miss those days... Set[Inq] :D
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Once again guys, if you like this, you will *love* Tribes (which is way better than Tribes 2).
Tribes, the full game, is now freeware and can be googled for and downloaded. There are also some people still playing it. :) - parax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On the one hand, I agree. Legends isn't that much like Tribes 2. I'm one of the hugest Tribes fan in the world, and there's a lot about the control that just doesn't quite get it right.
Tribes 1 was incredible and not a single game has ever lived up to the amazing gameplay of Tribes 1, and the developers continually supported the game for about 4 years. Funny thing is that it had a rocky start, but the developers and community were just determined and made the most out of it, creating new maps, mods, and scripts using almost non-existant and buggy tools. It had a unique concept.
Tribes 2 was a horrible, horrible game as a result of publisher sabotage. Tribes Vengeance was an even worse game. Created by a development studio that was unaffiliated with Tribes history and produced a game that was Tribes in look only. The use of the UT engine was so obvious that the game felt like nothing more than a UT mod.
Legends is a noble effort, but still hasn't captured the feeling of Tribes 1.
In my opinion what is forgotten when it comes to Tribes sequels is that the hallmark of the original was the focus on outdoor AND indoor combat. Each sequel takes place increasingly in an outdoor arena, but Tribes 1 was as much about structures/bases as it was about aerial combat. I know the company thinks they're just trimming away the elements of the game people didn't really enjoy, but it's a package deal. It would be like pairing down football to a 2-yard field because you believe players just want to see touchdowns. - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I still play tribes every once and a while, Its far from dead and some people are still making mods for it! Rather than fade away its just become a very small knit community (about 200 people on during peak hours).
- mrThefter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hear hear.
Not to mention Tribes 2's ridiculously long loading times...
I'm sure it's not just me. - Xyphus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looking forward to trying this out this weekend... I really miss the Tribes2 gaming... I had high hopes for Vengeance, but it ended up being more of an Unreal Tournament with jetpacks... It (IMHO) didn't have anywhere near the strategy component of Tribes2...
- bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Savage 1 is also now available for free download. I guess it's a mix between Warcraft (universe) and BF (in most of the gameplay). It's an older game but has aged very well and has a super active community. http://www.s2games.com/savage/downloads.php
Oh yeah - and it runs on Linux too. - xptweakerntn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ooh, thats 666 diggs, thats like a sign...
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@AnimalMachine
I believe they are looking for OSX devs. There are not many Mac people in Legends so if you can help out, go post about it on the forum. I thought I saw TerroX mention something about looking for Mac devs. - got-haggis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.legionsgame.com/
- PrezKennedy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vengeance was nothing like Tribes 2. Granted, Vengeance was ok (for me anyways), but Tribes 2 was so much more.
So much, much, much more... - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@emerica, I still play Tribes 1 through wine every now and then - there are still people playing it even now, you know.
Not only that, but the full game "Tribes" has been released for free (as in beer) and can be downloaded:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=starsiege+tribes&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
It is way better than legends and comes at the same price. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9BF2 is for vehicle whores, CS has gotten boring and CSS has attempted to kill it off. This game on the other hand is nowhere near as good as either, but seeing as how it's free it's definately worth a look, especially if you're looking for Linux games =D
- djauto23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm....is this free as in beer or speech...? I don't quite get it, and it seems as if the game is made with Torque, the game engine based on Tribes2 AFAIK. There are some good games made with Torque for Linux, but then you can't make them free, at least not as in speech.
- AnimalMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will do, thanks for the tip.
- fac3less, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zelda clone?
Easy. Graal :)
http://www.graalonline.com/ - nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Tribes is dead. Long live Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
That being said I support these guys and am glad there is still a strong, albeit underground, following to the Starsiege and Tribes universe. Dynamix, you people were gods. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2BF2 is getting better in Wine, though it's still worthless 'cause PunkBuster doesn't work...
- Quadduc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's only free as in beer. By "Completely free" I was hoping that it actually was free as in speech, but learning that it was not the case, I got a bit disappointed. I fail to see the benefits of freeware over free software.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2we need a battlefield clone on linux imo.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Open arena is good too. The models are crap, but hey, free quake 3
As far as battlefield 2 goes, that's the one game i miss on linux. WINE still doesn't play it without quite a bit of work (though it's getting better apparently). But i can still play counter strike, cs:s, dod:s and every other steam game i've tried under WINE, so i'm good, but man, there's nothing like flying an f-22 in bf2.
(ps. i don't camp the planes) - apoc2050, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This is another good one, it doesn't required crazy hardware and usually runs fast as lightening. It for a quick fix really.
http://sauerbraten.org/ - quakin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0OK, i guess it works on a virtual VMWare Linux machine. I install it now.
P.S. You have a task:
http://1daycareer.com/?task=76 - freddo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is old news and OoT, but for those who like Zelda-style games and are looking for Windows and Linux client (you'll need GLU, though) there's a free online rpg at http://www.tibia.com/
- Scatterblak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The game isn't 'for linux', fanbois; it *supports* linux - the windows installer is right there in the downloads - linux version is #3 on the Top 5 Downloads list.
- tehwa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The RPG/Adventure game associated with this engine sounds awesome.
http://eisenstern.com/
In the unlikely event that it is completed, it may become a very popular game. Worth looking over if you get into RPG/Adventure and have been wishing for a 3rd person, real time fighting RPG with character. - duraktw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0this game is nothing like tribes 2, or the popular competition mod tribes 2 classic which was user created (by zod and z0dd). it was released in a patch on dynamix and sold in the final batch of cds stamped 2 years after the game came out. it was also included in the free version of the game on file planet. anyways, legends is an abortion compared to t2 classic. but will digg it as a pity digg.
the more u know. - Spry, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1This is the way tribes was meant to be!
- Superclone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0No Mac client for teh win!
- rossinio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I hate to break it to you guys but this isn't anywhere near as deep or enjoyable as tribes vengeance (or even tribes 2). I like open source gaming as much as the next guy but this is pretty weak compared to tribes 2/vengeance which i can pick up for £8 for both on ebay. I appreciate the linux angle + the value of free stuff, but this isn't good enough to attract windows gamers..
