- TheWindBlows, on 01/10/2009, -3/+26If a Linux version of chrome comes along i'll probably move to it because of Webkit specifically. There are some Linux Webkit browsers but they are not yet complete Arora Qt4 Webkit and Midori GTK+ Webkit.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -7/+27I love technology.
- roxgod666, on 01/10/2009, -1/+16You are 99% wrong.
- dirTdogE, on 01/10/2009, -1/+16You can try the Webkit build of Epiphany.
- jamesmcm, on 01/10/2009, -0/+14Well no-one gives KDE (KHTML) credit for starting it either.
- bonez56, on 01/10/2009, -9/+23I think Google shot themselves in the foot by releasing the first version way too early.
There are no extensions, it was a bit buggy, only available for Windows etc.
If they had of spent a bit more time developing it before releasing to the market then they would have gained a lot more support right from the 'start'.
I tried it on a Windows box when it first came out and was not really too happy with it due to the fact that I am highly addicted to my 3 or 4 Firefox addons which I can hardly bare to surf the web without.
I am very open and hope that Google continue to constantly improve on Chrome. Going by their past products I am sure it will not be long now until it's fighting other major browsers for market share. - WibWobble, on 02/02/2009, -2/+14And 87% of statistics are made up on the stop.
- WibWobble, on 02/02/2009, -3/+14I was totally thrown at "as well as a new HTTP (define)" - had to read it 5 times over just to realize the "define" was a stupidly-thought out "help" feature.
Also, they couldn't possibly have been any more inconsistent with the capitalization of "Stable-channel" and "Dev-Channel" - there was probably every variation of caps...
And there's a threshold where repeating the same words is just too much.
Buried for crap writing. - stewacide, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11Chrome is there to fight IE, and Google is going after the "low information" set with OEM pre-installs. There's no need for Chrome on Mac or Linux - from Google's pov - because there's no IE.
- coldkill3r, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebKit
"WebKit was originally derived by Apple Inc. from the Konqueror browser’s KHTML software library for use as the engine of Mac OS X’s Safari web browser, and has now been further developed by individuals from the KDE project, Apple, Nokia, Google, Torch Mobile and others." - stoanhart, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9That statement makes no sense.
- nebkiwi, on 01/10/2009, -2/+9Safari has adblock... http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/ first result on Google!
- lvizon, on 01/10/2009, -1/+8@mindspike
"The majority of people don't use addons. We're talking about non-technical people here. "
Dude. Toolbars in IE6. - rodrigo74, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7I prefer turtles.
- las3rjock, on 01/10/2009, -0/+6It tells you in the article that you can tell Chrome to update from the Beta channel or the Dev channel instead of the Stable channel by using the Google Chrome Channel Changer application, which is available at http://chromium.googlecode.com/files/chromechannel ...
- daviddiaz, on 01/10/2009, -0/+6Fine then, if there will be no ad ons, then it must have a way of eliminating ads. Otherwise thanks, but no thanks.
- jadrian, on 01/10/2009, -2/+8I'd most probably move it Google Chrome was using Qt as its integration with KDE would be great. Can't understand why they didn't follow that path. Qt is an amazing development toolkit, cross platform, and even better, it integrates with webkit!
Very disappointing that they didn't. - CybrMike, on 01/10/2009, -1/+7safari has adblock, just google it.
- lvizon, on 01/10/2009, -0/+5Because Chrome is more than just Webkit.
- lvizon, on 01/11/2009, -0/+5He's back! Hurry, bury him!!
- Peck3277, on 01/10/2009, -1/+6I want to use chrome.
I love its simple clean interface, less tool bars means more screen real estate for me which helps for laptops. Plus its fast.
The only thing is I want first is add-ons so I don't think i'll move until then? - jonsterling, on 01/10/2009, -1/+6The Webkit build of Epiphany is so buggy it's not even funny.
- Pinkertinkle, on 01/10/2009, -3/+8cool maybe i will use safari
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -2/+6Firefox with the webkit rendering engine maybe.
- ijmok, on 01/10/2009, -1/+5pc ? i assume you mean windows,
linux and even osx are on "pc's" as well - ambion, on 01/10/2009, -1/+5So do I! :)
- MattBD, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4Actually the KDE developers got into some kind of spat with Apple over WebKit and KHTML. WebKit is a fork of KHTML, and Apple were at one point just doing the absolute minimum to comply with the terms of the LGPL - sending changes they'd made to the code in huge patches that had very little documentation. Apparently things are a bit better now though.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -2/+6From the article: "Google has not yet provided a specific date for a Mac and Linux release of Chrome"
So how exactly do you judge when something is closer to infinity? - MattBD, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3OK, here's my take on the reasons for Google creating Chrome:
1) Google are trying to push their web apps such as GMail and Google Docs, and performance for these is highly dependent upon browser performance. Google weren't happy with the current generation of browsers so they began work on their own. IE's performance with IE7 is still disappointing at best, and the less said about IE6 the better. It's therefore to Google's advantage to create a browser that will get the best performance out of their web apps.
2) Google is a company anyone with a computer is likely to have heard of. People who use IE might not trust Firefox because they haven't heard of Mozilla, but they will almost certainly be aware of Google so they'd be more likely to use Google's browser.
3) Google search is tightly integrated into Chrome so they're likely to get more income from ads. Not many people are going to bother changing the default search engine if it's Google. But equally many IE users will stick with Live Search because that's integrated into IE, so for every person that drops IE for Chrome then Google will probably be getting more searches. - inactive, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3Try downloading. Not sure where to download it? Google it.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3I love's tha ladies...
- gumballer, on 01/10/2009, -2/+5Digg is pretty fast on Minefield
- fugazied, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3Dunno, I use Chrome for pure speed, so I'd keep it plugin free I think (maybe use 1password with it). I think the blessing and curse of Firefox are it's huge number of add-ons. Firefox is (for me) slower than safari, webkit and hell, even Internet explorer at times for me, due the number of web devloper and toolbar crap I have loaded on. Firefox also crashes a lot fo me on both PC and Mac, and that is also due to some dodgy plugin code. But I love the plugins and the browser (Firefox) despite the issues caused by some of those lovely plugins.
- alski707, on 01/10/2009, -6/+9Hosts file = a real mans adblock.
Why use Chrome? it renders Digg faster than anything else. - ethana2, on 01/10/2009, -1/+4* on windows is slow as *****...
Perhaps 7 will change that? - JoelJ, on 01/10/2009, -2/+5Google is actively adding support for extensions. So you'll get them soon enough. Just be patient. The rate Google is moving, it'll be here in no time.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 01/10/2009, -1/+3But safari on windows is slow as *****...
- bigteebo, on 01/10/2009, -1/+3The spastic scrolling on synaptics touchpads sadly, is a dealbreaker. One issue that is majorly annoying.
- ohhsoocutee, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2click on this: http://chromium.googlecode.com/files/chromechannel ...
and select dev channel. then, once finished, restart your google chrome - soliac, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Hah: "Chrome succeeds in one key thing, speed"
=> "...if people are patient" - raseel, on 01/10/2009, -2/+4I don't get it. Why do we still have a "we COULD see" w.r.t Chrome ? Google should have released Chrome for Linux alongwith Windows.
- CCmachined, on 01/11/2009, -0/+2"windows build of anything because its easier" < ??
using open source libraries, a Linux app can be ported with the ease of a simple recompile, as long as linux specific system calls aren't used. - inactive, on 01/10/2009, -2/+4As usual: "No official word yet however on when a Google Chrome for Mac or Linux is actually coming. A Google spokesperson was not immediately available for comment."
meh - lvizon, on 01/11/2009, -1/+3***** your blog
- srg13, on 01/11/2009, -1/+3Yeah, it's pretty dodgy and Epiphany is not a very good browser anyway...
- Atomic1fire, on 01/10/2009, -1/+3First off, Google usually starts with a windows build of anything because its easier, and more people use windows.
the other ports will likely come later, as chromium improves. - agildehaus, on 01/10/2009, -1/+2I want a Webkit-based browser for Windows that doesn't suck. I want more competition in the browser world, especially on Windows where Internet Explorer exists, not less. I want my browser to have a minimalist UI and feature set, but be extendable in both those areas (Firefox is moving away from this with recent releases, Chrome towards).
There are plenty of reasons to have another browser. - Pinkertinkle, on 01/10/2009, -9/+10i dont use safari since it has no adblock, nor will I use chrome until it has adblock
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -1/+2Ya, that all sounds logical to me. Thanks. I think people thought I was trying to put Chrome down. My bad.
- Vektuz, on 01/10/2009, -3/+4But still no adblock. I guess they really enjoy wasting time on a table missing two legs.
Note: I'm not expecting "adblock" itself, but some similar thing that works on the same lists. -
