- eean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Its a good name. The point is to discourage users from using this version. Its only for developers.
And its not like Wii or Longhorn. Its just the name of this release. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Screenshots?
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Last I herd there arn't many visual upgrades, they have been busy converting to QT4, but don't hold me to that statement, as ive been out of it's dev. loop
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21You're not funny.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12are you kidding? That's not old hardware at all! I primarily use an 800mhz p3! Just have more than 128mb/ram (pref. 192mb+) and you should be set. Though, Xfce/Fluxbox will allways run faster, I LOVE KDE!
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12It's not the official NAME, just a codename, like the Revolution was to the Wii, or Longhorn was to Vista. I'm sure the final build will not be called Krash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22is the name "Krash" really a good choice? Although most people say KDE is similar to windows, it doesn't need to be THAT close does it?
- youngcable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Whatever happened with Plasma?
- oh, yeah, and the new icon theme: http://www.oxygen-icons.org - anarchistuk, on 08/11/2009, -2/+8Is it just me or is Linux OS starting to look sleeker than Mac OSX?
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Firefox 3 is codenamed "Minefeild"
- jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6KDE runs decently on my 700mhz 256mb of ram machine if I'm not running anything like Apache or Mysql in the background. Its a bit slow but its pretty none the less. I happy with xfce though.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@youngcable Yeah Oxygen have some sexy looking icons. When is it going live?
- dmason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I'm wanting some, too.
- CiRu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From what I understand you won't see any KDE4 screenshot goodness for a little while still, these are just the background libs and don't provide any new eye candy yet, stay tuned
- youngcable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4no clue when Oxygen will go live, but I mean... with all of this new stuff under development, it would be nice to see it all in KDE4...
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6KDE is better than gnome for old machines, FYI.
- rabidwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You will be able to "perform the cool effects", but it will be faster to turn off eyecandy. If you still think it goes too slow you might try XFCE (http://xfce.org) which is a medium-weight desktop suitable for lower-end machines.
PS: Make sure your swap partition is big enough! You wouldn't want to run out of ram and your swap to fill up, would you? :) - handheldchimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sry, Centos tells me i have a 600mhz pentium 3, with 200 mbs of ram. Will i be able to perform the cool effects in kde3?
- jarvuss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4GNU is a cool name too, the whole recursive "GNU's Not Unix"
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7KDE > Aero glass thingy for vista
Gnome is good on machines that are like 4 years old.
I use Xfce of my 8 yr old computer! - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2its the codename for the testing release. Theyve used it in the past and its a pretty good name for what its for.
- handheldchimp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4thanx, ill try to fool around with it a little!
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No PPC yet... damn Apple hardware. can't wait to get an x86 box again.
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4T... is that you? Comcastic!
- HerbertScrunge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Last I herd there arn't many visual upgrades, they have been busy converting to QT4, but don't hold me to that statement, as ive been out of it's dev. loop"
Yep - on the Dot announcement a while back, a dev responded to requests for screenshots by saying that "it looks just like KDE 3.5, but with more crashes" :)
Those interested in the progress of Plasma will probably want to add this feed to their RSS a(k?)gregators:
http://planetkde.org/rss20.xml
Aaron Seigo has promised to blog every Wednesday about Plasma progress. Plus, there's lots of other juicy KDE-related stuff in there :) - handheldchimp, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Question...does the newer publically released kde (kde3) work on a 800 mhz pentium 3? Cuz i installed centOS on a Pentium 3 laptop and wanted to know if kde would work on it.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"And its not like Wii or Longhorn. Its just the name of this release."
Actually, Wii is the final name of the system AFAIK. - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0something about running a beta version of Linux with a code name of krash and a version which is called f'ed oops I mean edgy eft Just makes me a little uneasy.
- rabidwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Some others:
-Ogg vorbis (I know it's just a music format, not really "linux related" but you know what I mean)
-Dapper drake
-edgy eft
-Xubuntu
-GIMP
The list goes on...
But it does have some cool ones:
-Linux (It's just such a cool name: Linux Linux Linux Linux... it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside ;)
-Gentoo
-Fedora
-Fluxbox
-Compiz
-epiphany
-firefox
-konqueror
-Inkscape
And others but the list would be too long - sk545, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Krash...man, one thing linux community really sucks with are names. They just cannot give anything a cool name, be it a snapshot or not. Example: Mepis. Might as well name it Penis.
- eean, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Nothing to see here. Move along.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -25/+5All this jibba-jabba is confusing me! I need more, warm, comforting Mac articles on the main page.
I'm scared.
