- dnaspydir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5just when i thought i found something to Digg, i get beat to the punch again.. oh well... guess i know how my morning is going to be spent today ;-)
- Greattastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4thanks for posting this one, I was unaware of how easy a mythtv install could be :-)
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4To find the torrent link, go to http://mythic.tv/, and scroll to the bottom, where there is an image with the word "KnoppMyth", or you can get the torrent directly, here: http://66.93.61.137/KnoppMythR5B7.iso.torrent
Thanks for posting. I had actually just visited this site yesterday, and was confused where to download the latest version, because most of the sites were either down, or had old versions. - citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1whats the best tv card to get if i want to set up a box?
- berean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.pchdtv.com/
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3go to the forms (www.mysettopbox.tv) and ask there. LOTS of ppl that can give you great advice.
- statmobile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The Hauppauge cards do extremely well in linux with nice drivers released by the vendor I believe. Let the specs of your machine dictate which card to get... PVR-150 - needs fairly good processor/resources PVR-250 - encodes on the card and PVR-350 encodes and decodes on the card. I run everything off a PIII using a PVR-350, and I can barely tell it's running on the computer. Save yourself the headache, buy a PVR-*50 card!
With that said, I'm not sure how much I like knoppmyth. It's extremely easy to run, but the o/s doesn't seem very stable. I hear that knoppix isn't the best distro for installations, and I keep getting odd lock-ups, etc. Its plus is that it is so dang easy to install, but I think I'll eventually move to Gentoo so as to minimize all the extra programs I don't care for on my mythbox. - Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the hauppage cards are great cards, but to correct the earlier posting the drivers do not come from hauppage they are open source, however hauppage has been fairly generous with the open source community. If they would just stop changing the tuner chip every week or two ;)
Despite what the earlier poster said many people run Knoppmyth just fine without lockups, and there really are not many programs outside of what needs to be there to make a good set top box. - citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@statmobile
i see that the 250 is pretty cheap...
would that work well with my 1.5ghz athalon? with only 386 megs of ram? - statmobile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Xsecrets: Thanks for clarifying the ivtv driver situation, I wasn't sure exactly who maintained that project. I'm not sure I agree with you about the knoppmyth statement, but we all have our preferences. One thing that I think we can agree upon is that having to download a new iso to update your system isn't always a preferred way of updating one's linux distro. Some don't mind it, but others (such as myself) find it to be a hastle.
I don't want to knock knoppmyth, as I think it's a great project. I just wanted to point out the fact that ease of installation shouldn't be the only consideration when choosing a distribution
citrusfizz: You have plenty of power in your processor for the PVR-250, but I would recommend getting more RAM, especially if the computer is not a dedicated mythtv server. - kjacobso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ statmobile
The PVR-150 also does hardware MPEG-2 encoding, I was recording just fine in my PIII 800 384MB box.
http://www.haupauge.com/pages/products/data_pvr150.html - juice09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just set up my box. Athlon 2500+, 512MB Ram, Nvidia GeForce FX5200 and Hauppauge WinTV PVR 500. This Hauppauge card has two 150 tuners on it, allowing the recording of two shows at once. You would need two of the 250 or 350 cards to accomplish the same, but from what I have been reading, they provide better encoding.
I currently see about 14% CPU usage when watching livetv or a recording. With this KnoppMyth release, I should be able to turn on the XvMC support on my Nvidia card, and my CPU usage will drop to around 3% since the Nvidia card will be decoding the MPEG video.
- berean, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Niot that I have anything against Knoppix, but can we PLEASE start posting things other than new releases of iTunes, Ubuntu, Knoppix, podcasts, etc? It's getting really old.
- Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Knoppmyth actually has very little to do with Knoppix anymore. It only uses the hardware detection from it these days, and the purpose is obviously quite different.
- aten, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i never could get the old one installed, now lets try the new one
jsk: 1800 , 1 gb ram, 200 gb 40gb HDDs, and a WinTV-PVR-150
I hope it works ;)
does any one what a ".md5sum" is ?
ftp://ftp.supertux.com/pub/mirrors/knoppmyth/
Thanks- Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4a ".md5sum" is a file that contains the md5sum (an algorithmic hash) of the file. It is helpful in determining if your download is good or not.
this is a very simplistic explanation, maybe someone else will spend the time to explain in more detail.

- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@berean this has nothing to do with anything you listed
this is knoppmyth.. the media center software for linux... people have been waiting for this realease - berean, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Knoppix is the basis for KnoppMyth, and I'm obviously not just talking about the things I listed. Digg has been spammed with new releases all the time. If you want to know what's been newly released, check the website. If I care about the new Gaim, I'll check the website. If I care about Knoppix, I'll check the website. We have new release posts every single day--at least one of them--and it's getting ridiculous.
- SimpleMan46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Digg is a democracy. Obviously people have interest in these things, so they make the main page. Don't like it? Don't digg it.
- berean, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Democracy is flawed and favors complacency. Also, that's a lame excuse for ***** that shouldn't be on the front page every day.
- pwncore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Some of us don't check for new releases every day. If it weren't for Digg I'd be running a lot of outdated software.

- Ben- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is a torrent, which I got up to 160kbps. I gave a link to it. But aletornw seems to think that 26 kb torrent file will cause some sort of digg effect, even though it's only listed in the comments.
Alright. I've uploaded the torrent on my website. I think it'll work:
Torrent: http://www.quate.net/archive/downloads/KnoppMythR5B7.iso.torrent (right click and save it, instead of going to the URL.)

Also, that's a lame excuse for ***** that shouldn't be on the front page every day.- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Knoppix is no longer the base for Knoppmyth and hasn't been for a long time. As a matter of fact a distro change is coming for the base of Knoppmyth. It's just that the name has stuck and nobody wants to change it.
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does MythTV work great with Ubuntu? I want to build a HTPC and able to record and/or watch live HDTV and non-HDTV. I've seen pchdtv and happage cards but do I use both together side by side on one box? If Knoppmyth works better as the OS, that shall be my route. I have to search forums but does anybody here have an answer?
- Fratz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Between inserting the KnoppMyth install CD and running MythTV, it'll take you about 21 minutes (on Dragon reference hardware & a broadband network connection). There are certainly HOWTOs and such for running MythTV on other distros, but it might take you days, and then you still have to tweak lots of things. Just swap your main HDD out and try KnoppMyth, and you'll have a point of comparison for running it with Ubuntu or other distros.
- dmfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no issues with knoppmyth as an os, since it is really debian. I am also not using any hd capture card. I am fortunate enough to have a Motorola DCT-6200 with a live firewire port on it. It helped reduce the cost of my myth box a bit and works extremely well for me. Changes channels, records unecrypted raw video from the box.
The system is, imo, much more stable than the prior version, R5A26, that I was running up to the release of R5B7.
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Cool, a great new strategy! Instead of sucking it up when your comment gets modded down, you post it over and over again!
