- turezky, on 08/28/2009, -1/+25Something tells me we aren't going to see a new theme this time either :(
- cmost, on 08/28/2009, -5/+19Gee, more brown, more orange. What a shock! Absolutely nothing new or ground-breaking. A resounding yuck!!!
- ukblacknight, on 08/28/2009, -0/+13They're ok, each have their faults which annoys me. I think Kin was stylish, but it was just too bright. I hated the massive window border at the bottom on the Impression theme.
It's going to take a lot for me to budge from Shiki-Colours! - tusseyd, on 08/29/2009, -2/+10ENOUGH WITH THE BROWN!!!! Would it be asking too much to have a theme in blue or green?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 08/28/2009, -4/+10yuk! i thought karmic was going the bring a *more* attractive interface, not a less attractive one. and i thought that we were finally going to see something other than the standard "orange/brown" diarrhea color scheme
- Nickedynick, on 08/28/2009, -5/+10Humanity icons should really be the default for Karmic.
It's nice to see more decent themes coming through the system too! - orb9220, on 08/28/2009, -0/+5They have a flickr group for wallpaper.

They are open for next few weeks for submissions. Of your personal works. - inactive, on 08/30/2009, -0/+4Shhhh....just mentioning that you can't get sound right out of the box is enough to incur the wrath of the fanboys.
I have an HP dv-7 and I could never get sound working properly in Ubuntu or Mint, however,I *just* started using Fedora Omega, which a remix of Fedora, but with all the proprietary pre-installed, and so far I've gotten system sounds & mp3s to work right out of the box.
http://omega.dgplug.org/ - Tape99, on 08/28/2009, -3/+7That looks really bad.
- moondowner, on 08/28/2009, -3/+7Love what Canonical is doing. They even have a team of people payed to develop the Look & Feel of Ubuntu.
My favourites:
- theme: Turrican
- icons: Humanity - inactive, on 08/30/2009, -0/+4Meh, this is pretty underwhelming.
- Chipesh, on 08/31/2009, -0/+4The Ubuntu obsession with ***** brown is unhealthy.
Why do they insist on sticking with it in the face of so much criticism ?
Yes you can change it but it's a sign that they don't listen. Not a good thing.
Bob - johndavidjack, on 08/30/2009, -1/+4I never knew a theme was so important, I mean Jesus, can't you just ***** change it? Half of these comments are from the supposed 'elite linux' users that cannot even figure out how to change the ***** theme.
***** you guys. You stifle real innovation with your tampon induced bitchfests. - MrRtd, on 08/29/2009, -1/+4I don't know why you're getting dugg down, I have to say that these are an improvement over the old default theme/icons but none of these have that "cool" factor that people would see and say I want that.
Maybe it's just me but that awful orangish/brownishness has got to go, the sooner the better.
But I don't really care that much anyway, as I prefer KDE. - skztr, on 08/28/2009, -0/+3Will they delete the default artwork I've been happy with, without providing an obvious way to get it back, like they did the last two releases?
- moondowner, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2Maybe, but even if one of these isn't the default one, we can download them and use them :)
- explodingzebras, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2I use ClearlooksClassic (though I used to use Glossy before they seemly dropped it for Jaunty.) with Human Azul (aka Human Blue) icons. I like blue themes, and don't like brown/orange!
- x713, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2I thought they were going to postpone the artwork for Karmic? I could have sworn reading that somewhere...
- fiddler616, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2Well EVERYTHING is possible with enough effort when it comes to Linux, but significantly less is possible easily.
Although to be fair, I'm typing this from XP, and I have four choices for my taskbar: blue, green, classic gray or third-party hack. Which isn't a very inspiring list. - touchinmyself, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2The last release had new themes its just neither where made default like we thought they would be.
- Jareth86, on 08/29/2009, -2/+4Until ubuntu can finally get sound on my HP dv5, it looks like I'm stuck with vista :/
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 08/30/2009, -0/+2there has been a lot of online speculation discussing a change in the orange/brown diarrhea theme for Koala (indicating that it was almost certain); that's why i was hoping for it.
as for branding, the biggest complaint against Ubuntu has always been its color scheme. for canonical to change the color scheme would not only be a huge move, but a remarkably wise and prudent one. remember, their market isn't a bunch of geeks sitting in their parent's basement, wearing only underwear, slamming jolt while simultaneously inhaling a pizza. their target market is businesses and newbie computer owners who hate windows and can't afford a mac. a huge change in visual branding like that could bring in a lot of new users who were initially put off by the default theme they saw on the LIVE discs (that's a lot of people, btw. about 64% of my clients say that's why they won't use it, despite the custom themeing abilities-- they say it should just "look good" from the beginning). for example: "our operating system is new, free, open-source, advanced, supports 64-bit architectures natively, and, best of all, doesn't look like your toilet after a burrito-eating contest!" now that's branding!
as for changing the theme, i do, but it's not all that easy-- and for a novice, nearly impossible. in fact, so many people have a problem with this (and other ubuntu shortcomings) that an entire new sub-distro has been crated: Linux Mint-- basically Ubuntu that doesn't look like a pool of vomit. - Yeyui, on 08/31/2009, -0/+2"as for changing the theme, i do, but it's not all that easy-- and for a novice, nearly impossible."
Seriously? System > Preferences > Appearance; click on a theme. Done.
It seems intuitive to me, but then its been awhile since I could call myself a novice. - Yeyui, on 08/29/2009, -1/+3What in the world gave the impression that the default theme would move away from Ubuntu Brown?
The color scheme is part of the branding. Changing it would be a HUGE move. It may happen one day, but there would be plenty of fanfare and talk about it. And not just people whining about the color.
Remember, there is nothing making you use the default theme! If you don't like Ubuntu Brown/Orange, just don't use it. - jmdsdf, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1You can already do this, just set a background image for the panel. In fact, I've got my panels partially transparent using a PNG. I agree with what you're saying--it's not simple. I found the whole concept of panel layouts and menu layouts anything but intuitive when I started using Gnome.
- canthraxp, on 08/28/2009, -3/+4One of the themes they packed in Ubuntu 9.04 is pretty good: New Wave. Just swap the icons for Savannah:
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Gnome%2 ...
And it looks great. - yfph, on 08/29/2009, -0/+1Did I miss the memo that promised Karmic's artwork to be more of the same? I know it is easy for most of us here to visit gnome-look and download/install the theme of our choice. However, in the hands of journalists, what they will look at/play with is what comes to their testing system as default. Initial impressions matter when trying to garner a greater mindshare.
- Yeyui, on 08/31/2009, -0/+1Brilliant!
Seriously, submit that idea. - Copernicus1234, on 08/29/2009, -1/+2
Am I the only one who actually think these themes are a big improvement over what used to ship with Ubuntu?
They are not as good as the best themes out there, and it would have been nice with themes that actually blew people away. But its still an improvement. I was expecting them to be worse. - Chipesh, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1Try billgates@microsoft.com
Bob - fiddler616, on 08/29/2009, -1/+2Am I crazy, or does Human look better than Humanity?
I feel like the folders have more...personality, or something.
I think the best thing to do about Ubuntu's appearance in terms of the effort/benefit ratio is to have an easy way to have the panels be several shades of one color--making them look a bit more three dimensional. Examples: Luna (XP), Aero (Vista) and KDE. - Azathothh, on 08/31/2009, -1/+2yay one more Ubuntu release a new theme
WHO CARES - ikzeidegek, on 08/31/2009, -0/+1Karmic just lost the ability to connect to wired and wireless internet on my laptop. Yes, I know it's an alpha, but leaving *some* internet connectivity functional would have been so nice...
- ikzeidegek, on 08/31/2009, -0/+1If I were Canonical...
I'd put two BIG buttons on the desktop after installation: "Blue Desktop" and "Green Desktop"; one click, and the user has switched themes. How hard would that be? - cloviejr, on 08/29/2009, -1/+1Burnt sienna is *****' rad
- drelyn86, on 08/28/2009, -7/+7This ongoing ***** brown scheme should've been on the annoying papercuts list.
- yfph, on 08/29/2009, -4/+3Looks nice, but unfinished. They are certainly heading in a better direction than Ubuntu's art team though.
- DanRabbit, on 09/03/2009, -2/+0Hey, just a shameless self plug here:
I'm the main developer for elementary and Humanity icons. I'm a college student and I definitely don't work for Canonical, so if you like my work a small donation is much appreciated.
Don't mean to guilt trip, but I've recently had some trouble with my car and the bill came out to $300. So, if 300 digg users donated one dollar I can eat this week :)

Thanks everyone! - bradwjensen, on 08/28/2009, -12/+9The Icons blow chunks, but the Turrican theme is not all that bad.. Still, it's all quite 90s. :(
- rpgmakr, on 08/29/2009, -5/+2What a ***** post. Buried.
- danydral, on 08/28/2009, -5/+0this indeed makes me optimistic abt not having any worries while deploying linux on my personal computers one day, there is still a long road to go.
- a-bomb, on 08/28/2009, -13/+5I much prefer openSUSE new Sonar theme. http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/en/3/38/OS11.2M ...
