- Tsiolkovsky, on 09/08/2008, -1/+31Well I don't believe it is more then half of the Linux desktops. No serious survey has been done so far. Now we only have to wait for GTK developers to do the same and integrate a native GQtStyle into GTK. I wonder if GTK is even capable of implementing all the advanced styling features of Qt4. Anyways, great job Qt developers, you are making Qt truly the best toolkit for easy programming of cross-platform and cross-desktop applications. Keep up the excellent work.
- dualscreenman, on 09/08/2008, -1/+24Even if GTK has a slight edge, (nobody knows for sure) the numbers are pretty close. The question is, when will GTK offer the same quality integration that Qt is now providing? The current solution for theming solution for GTK-Qt4 theming is quite buggy, since it is done by one hobbyist coder not affiliated with GTK who hasn't had time recently to work on it. I find it quite funny that Qt/KDE people have been doing all the integration work for both sides. By your logic, it is a bad thing for GTK not to give integration to this very large portion of the Linux desktop world.
Oh well, hopefully completion of the Qt Firefox frontend won't take too horribly long... - miggols99, on 09/08/2008, -0/+20This is good news. Now apps like Skype and VirtualBox will look good in GNOME :D
- masterofshadows, on 09/09/2008, -0/+16Qt was first developed in 1991
Quicktime wasn't released until dec 2nd 1991, it wasn't commonly referred to as QT until well after that
Its not Qt's fault that quicktime has been abreviated - metalgel, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14tech news on digg? wha? wha? wha?!
this is awesome! - iofthestorm, on 09/09/2008, -0/+12They aren't that good though IMO. Firefox 3 is pretty ugly under KDE, and using gtk-engine-kde4 or whatever it's called made it slightly better but also broke the tab bar.

VirtualBox 2.0, which uses Qt4, has been out for a while now. - burrgrinder, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9How so? Seems to work fine for me, just like it has for the last 10 years.
Maybe it doesn't meet *your* needs, but the same holds true for me with Windows. - dandelionmood, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8I guess it's because gnu/linux is about having the choice ;)
What really matters now is to deliver a coherent look'n'feel to the end user throughout all applications. - Vadi0, on 09/08/2008, -5/+13About time Qt delivers integration to more than half of the Linux desktops.
- srg13, on 09/09/2008, -0/+7What would you rather? Windows, where developers can choose from GTK and Qt, or the plain Win32 API, or MFC, Windows Forms, WPF etc.
I think in terms of GUI toolkits, we're pretty good with just two major ones. Even Apple has two. - armo, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6I'd never heard of QuickTime being referred to as QT. Can't be too many people that do either as it's not even mentioned in the top couple of pages of search results from google.
- JohnnyKdiggs, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6Site's down.
Here's an earlier story about the software:
http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2008/05/ ... - srg13, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5"There are a few drawbacks: GTK doesn't use the KDE color settings, so you're stuck with the defaults.
Icons in GTK apps are the default ones too."
Those, and that it looks horrible... - Giga, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5I think that was his point. This article is about Qt apps looking good in gnome.
- DreadKnight, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I like how QT looks, but i like how GTK+ looks even more. It's just the underlying technology that is deprecated.
With Gnome 3.0 would use QT :-) - srg13, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Because different people need different tools... It's not even that bad - on Linux you basically have either GTK or Qt, but on Windows you can use them, or Win32, MFC, Windows Forms or WPF...
- MrViklund, on 09/09/2008, -4/+7KDE > Gnome
- semon, on 09/09/2008, -2/+5MUCH better ? That is ugly !
- beermad, on 09/09/2008, -6/+9WHY???
When Qt-based apps look good and Gtk-based ones look *****, the last thing you want is to downgrade them.
I wonder if it emulates Gtk's crappy file-opener dialogue as well - might as well get the whole horrible Gnome experience while you're at it. - kr3mliyn, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Shhhhhhhhh, okay?
- KAMiKAZOW, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2So a common theming engine hinders choice?
Sounds a bit like MS who are claiming that ODF hinders choice in office software. - whereiseljefe, on 09/09/2008, -3/+5They've had it for a while, gtk-engines-qt http://gtk-qt.ecs.soton.ac.uk/

- TheRohan, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Good story.. Thx. As far as Qt goes, you may wanna check this out too-

Rohan - brettalton, on 09/11/2008, -0/+1"New Sep 4, 2008
VirtualBox 2.0 released!
Today is a significant day in the history of VirtualBox. The brand new version 2.0 comes with major enhancements such as 64-bit VMs, stronger networking capabilities and a native Mac OS X interface. See the change log and check out the press release for the full story."
Wow, a full 6 days ago. That's a VERY long time ago... - Peterix, on 09/09/2008, -1/+2Now what is MUCH better is to use the gtk port of the Oxygen theme.
You'll need:
gtk-qt-engine - for setting the gtk theme from KDE4
gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme - the actual Oxygen theme for gtk
And if you use firefox, get this theme to deuglify the firefox icons: Oxygen 1.0 (search the mozilla extension site)
You'll end up with something like this: http://dethware.org/diggscreen.jpeg
There are a few drawbacks: GTK doesn't use the KDE color settings, so you're stuck with the defaults.
Icons in GTK apps are the default ones too. - mysticmatrix, on 09/08/2008, -4/+4Yes, if only Virtual Box shift to Qt4.4+
- srg13, on 09/09/2008, -3/+2Maybe the file dialogue in GTK isn't that great, but at least the apps do actually look nice...
Maybe it's just the Oxygen theme, but any screenshot I see of Qt apps just looks shocking... - mikedoth, on 09/09/2008, -9/+5This should never have gotten this far, why can't people just agree on a standard?
- stewacide, on 09/09/2008, -9/+3If only Skype and GoogleEarth were GTK I wouldn't have to have QT on my Linux desktop at all.
- davideparker, on 09/09/2008, -7/+0Jesus I wish Trolltech would fix bugs instead of adding features. We report the same bugs every new release.
- zacbro, on 09/09/2008, -8/+1You sunk my battleship!
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -10/+2Wow, great idea naming something Qt, when QT already stands for QuickTime.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -10/+1meh
- fatejudger, on 09/09/2008, -11/+1Sorry to burst your bubble, but Skype uses QT.
- linuxlucas, on 09/09/2008, -14/+1I still won't use Amarok.
- GameEngineer, on 09/09/2008, -24/+4Desktop Linux == *****.
