- DrCrane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a really great primer, though, a little biased. Why can't people just write on the cold, hard facts without emotional attachment to the subject? Seriously, if Linux is better, the facts will bear witness. You shouldn't have to riddle your, otherwise helpful, article with snide comments and bash MS to convince people (not to mention that bashing MS is so passe). All your doing is re-enforcing the stereotype that the Linux community is a bunch of elitist, smarmy a**holes.
Linux has come leaps and bounds and is indeed a child prodigy of an OS. But, let's not forget its uncle Unix and how much it gleaned from existing knowledge and deconstruction of other OSes. Perspective, people. Let's try to keep some.
Also, the title should read "Thinking about installing Linux? 10 things you should know." Cuz, you really don't have any business switching to Linux before you know most of that stuff. - MrLobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty good article despite it's obligatory "It is less than half the age of Microsoft Windows, and yet it is more powerful, more stable, less resource-hungry, and graphically equal (if not superior) to this costly, buggy OS from Redmond.".
I run a dual boot system with XP and debian with kde. I am the target audience (linux noob). I love linux and plan on keep using and learning it and tweaking my system but stable, less resource-hungry, graphically equal or superior, less bugs? These are debatable and but so far I'd say my linux system so far loses to xp on each of these points. - twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1QUOTE:
PS. Automatic no-digg for any article with idiocies like n00b or 1337.
I think you're missing the whole tounge-in-cheek nature in which he posted the description. Can't use "n00b" and "1337"; can't make fun of "n00b" and "1337". I guess you can't win with this guy. - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay guys seriously we need more of these articles that scare away the jackals. Like the one that said "Comments on why this shouldn't be dugg should be left in comments." and now this one. Seriously enough of the jerks who post jerk comments about how stupid everyone is.
I'll digg to this. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty good now if only it had a easy URL like linux.info or something...
- DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh btw i Ended up installin Kubuntu :D
- Centurion`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If your a total noob to linux check it out.
dugg - eMpi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More "noob" information = more linux users = more and better linux apps. I digg it!
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i could have done with this 8 months ago
- DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very Useful info. I just installed Linux on a box with nothing on it (formatted hard drive and the like). And gettin GEntoo to work was a major pain in my @$$. This article and many others on Digg are a great help to n00bs. I wish i woulda checked digg b4 tryin it :P.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ya. Pretty n00bish information. But still pretty good.. /digg
Here's a quicker URL for linking: http://tinyurl.com/btr5r
:) - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every linux users "l337" or "n00b" should digg this so they could encourage MS users to shift. Even a bit of info like these can help "n00bs" easily migrate. So I digg this.
- Centurion`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, stop being so cynical because your mad at the world.
- mrdeadworry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linux is not windows. Duh!!!!!!!!!!! Get a clue. That is why we use linux.
Get over it and learn a new operating system and be led into the light. - crackez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@DrCrane
Everybody is biased, simply because everybody who goes through the effort to do anything pro or against something else has an agenda. Now, in this case, you might assume that this is a crush MS article, but I didn't see a negative comment about windows anywhere.
"The facts will bear witness." - they do, but this article isn't addressing that right now. It's just a quick intro to some stuff that most full time Linux users take for granted. I don't really think about this stuff anymore, infact i haven't given it a second thought in years. That's what makes it interesting to me though. It got me to look back and say "Boy, I remember what it was like back then, that was exciting!" I just wish I could find stuff as exciting now. So ++digg.
BTW, for anyone who may find themselves reading this, I also found the history of Unix really neat too: http://www.bell-labs.com/history/unix/ - unexplainedmilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this guide is fantastic. If only people had sent me to this first before trying to sell me on OpenOffice (yeah, because I'm SOOO going to start trying to use another OS just because it has a free version of my least used application....right)
thanks for the link, berean :) - link_36p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was a pretty ok read for somone like me who just switched :)
Although most things in this were prety obvious as soon as i started
poking around...
Only thing i learned (very glad i did though)
was the cool Ctrl-alt-escape trick ;) - nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not terrible at all...don't know why he name-dropped Xandros, though...i'd have said Ubuntu instead...and what about Debian or Fedora??
still, dugg, and blogged. - josdigital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dupe
http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/10_Things_You_Should_Know_About_Every_Linux_Installation.. - Genghis1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As much as I can't stand the king of ***** Bill Gates and M$,
I just don't have the desire or time to "tweak" an OS to get it to do
something useful. Linux is getting more and more fragmented with
new distros all the time. That is going the wrong direction if you ask me. I can't stand Microsoft, but I like Windows. I think I'm brainwashed.
HELP! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's what you REALLY should know:
Next week, you'll be re-installing Windows, vowing never again to put yourself through the horror and trauma of installing a clock, a pair or eyes that follow the mouse and a slightly different looking but less stable file manager that *might* run software no one knows how to install properly.
Sick of Windows? Buy a Mac. Linux just isn't ready for the rest of us, no matter what the nerds say. It makes for a nice side show, but it's just not funny when you're just trying to read your emails and your display driver decides to crash and all you can do is turn the power off and reboot, or you want to watch a video clip and the bozo who encoded it used a proprietary codec Linux can't, and never will properly support. - lapausainutil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thankyou
- dataloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I think you're missing the whole tounge-in-cheek nature in which he posted the description. Can't use "n00b" and "1337"; can't make fun of "n00b" and "1337". I guess you can't win with this guy."
You're right, here I was thinking he just wanted to be cool. Golly, how could I have missed it.
-dl - Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The amount of baldfaced lying contained in subject #3 in the article stopped me cold. I keep thinking of Mary McCarthy's take on a typically mendacious Lillian Hellman book: "Every word in it is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'."
Yet another psycho OS advocacy article trying to pass for useful information.
No digg. - biggiefrye45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0good info for people who are new to linux def a digg
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Waste of time.
There is more important stuff to linux compared to "ctrl+alt+esc."
I think this list is a piece of *****. - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What you should do? Format and install Windows XP
- thisnameisfake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You should know this before you install Linux. I agree, "noob" and "1337" are overused and just make you look stupid.
- project2501, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Sure this stuff is nice to have, but it has no real place on digg. Digg is a new site. this isnt news. This would be more suited to a learn-linux-links-wiki.
- dataloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Good information for newbies, but not quite apropros for the digg front page.
PS. Automatic no-digg for any article with idiocies like n00b or 1337. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That screen shot looked terrible because it was resized incorrectly in HTML. :( Still dugg though.
- Maskawanian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The author of this article nievely assumes that OS X is not a unix by his definition of the Mac file system. No Digg.
- chaosbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1seeing as how you use the term "1337", i'm guessing you need this info
