- equinoxChild, on 06/20/2008, -2/+98open source? from adobe?
- mtdaugherty, on 06/20/2008, -2/+90What an amazing week for open source.
- HCviolence, on 06/20/2008, -2/+77[obvious]good things will come from this[/obvious]
- santasing, on 06/20/2008, -1/+62This is big because this means that there is an implementation that does not have to go through the JCR process for approval of new features and improvements. This means more and more language bindings, better and faster Java.
And for once I wish people would just stop with the "Java is slow" stuff. - macbookhair, on 06/20/2008, -5/+56this is huge news
- Vigacmoe, on 06/20/2008, -0/+49finally, time for Debian to get rid of gcj and make sun-jdk the default
- Zector, on 06/20/2008, -0/+43To those that don't understand what this quite means. GPL goes by these 4 major freedoms.
* the freedom to use the software for any purpose,
* the freedom to share the software with your friends and neighbors,
* the freedom to change the software to suit your needs, and
* the freedom to share the changes you make.
The last two are the ones that are going to really make a difference, when possibly implementing Java into the iPhone released by a third party outside of Java, as chetanthaker stated earlier, and distributed freely. - 007isbond1, on 06/20/2008, -1/+42haha... the day that happens is the same day pigs fly.
- GamerX, on 06/20/2008, -4/+44mmmm... opensource coffee.... stick it up your ass, ***** starbucks!
- lemur, on 06/20/2008, -3/+37I always felt like Java just missed the boat on Linux. Other languages got deeply embedded into the Linux environment at a time when something like Java was really wanted. For example, look at GNOME's reliance on platforms like Python and C#. Code that might have been attractive to write in Java got passed off to other languages, be it C++ (looking at you, KDE), Python, C#, perl, etc. Imagine if Java had been GPL in the 90's, it would have been a massive win not only for Linux, but also for Java and a huge number of apps that had been written for Java but were struggling to get accepted in Linux. Java's glorious promise of cross-platform EVERYTHING seems to have been totally usurped by currently closed technologies such as Flash, Adobe AIR, and so on. How woeful...
I hope it's not too late for Java to be revitalized (and improved upon!). - jman583, on 06/20/2008, -3/+36Well when spore comes out...
- RadiatedAnt, on 06/20/2008, -1/+30I call for an opensource house party, someone bake the GPL cake and assorted cocktails.
- sfacets, on 06/20/2008, -2/+28Quick! Someone make a kick-ass version of Azureus which isn't Vuze!
- Vigacmoe, on 06/20/2008, -0/+26what?
- sumdog, on 06/20/2008, -0/+24So is .NET. You don't realize it because the .NET VM starts when windows starts. After the inital startup cost, Java runs just as fast as many native apps thanks to the JIT (Just in Time) compiler. It has a specific purpose. It's not intended to write 3D games with. For that you'd use C/C++.
If you look at the benchmarks of stuff like sorting, database queries, etc. you'd see that Java holds its own. Know you facts before making such a blanket ignorant statement dumbass. - sjmulder, on 06/20/2008, -0/+21Well I have seen flying sheep already. They were slaughtered brutally.
- orenshk, on 06/20/2008, -3/+23Yeah but it's (relatively) slow for a reason: platform independence. Oh and a good class structure, and out of the box garbage collection, and great typing. So shut it.
- KloroFormd, on 06/20/2008, -0/+20Try reading the GPL license sometime.
"Can I release a modified version of a GPL-covered program in binary form only?
No. The whole point of the GPL is that all modified versions must be free software—which means, in particular, that the source code of the modified version is available to the users."
Source -- http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#ModifiedJ ... - bhattsan, on 06/20/2008, -0/+19When WINE reaches...oh wait.
- chetanthaker, on 06/20/2008, -19/+36Java on the iPhone would be just KILLER
- TimDigg, on 06/20/2008, -0/+16Well when Duke Nukem Forever comes out...
- dacjames, on 06/20/2008, -0/+16Java was slow. Java is not intrinsically slow.
- jay019, on 06/20/2008, -0/+15HappyScrappy != retard. Oh hang on...
- santasing, on 06/20/2008, -0/+13I know there are lots of poorly designed Swing apps and applets but there are plenty of gems also. Blurb, Eclipse, Netbeans, Blogbridge, major apps in Google, Android (even though it is not *traditional* Java) just off the top of my head.
But just for raw performance, Java is shaping up very nicely.
http://kano.net/javabench/
We are writing a JEE webapp and now running some performance tests on it. We are getting around 4000 transaction per minute on our cluster. And this is without any optimizations. I myself was very surprised at this number. Ever since Java 5, Java performance has increased manyfold.
Now if only someone would hurry up and write something flasy AND useful in Java. - silviumc, on 06/20/2008, -1/+12openSUSE 11.0 that was released on June 19th includes openjdk 1.6 and even icedtea 1.7.
- Atomic1fire, on 06/20/2008, -0/+11Free as in freedom to modify without copyright infridgement
- praisethelard, on 06/20/2008, -1/+12Free != open source
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+10http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php
So your either a BSD whore (BSD licensing is nice but don't be a bastard about it, right tools for right jobs etc etc) or an idiot. - Vigacmoe, on 06/20/2008, -0/+10unfortunately, java is enterprise, python is more for "just for fun" projects
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -1/+11Does this mean it can finally come with linux, and not as an extra download??? yay!!!!
- Atomic1fire, on 06/20/2008, -0/+10free as in free to modify and distribute without getting in court
- brkhobowriter, on 06/20/2008, -1/+11open source? from sun microsystems?
Now what? - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+9When WINE reaches 2.0. There I said it.
- alexforcefive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+9Yeah it was free but it wasn't like... FREE, man...
- csm888, on 06/20/2008, -1/+10What you mean to say is.. "Java is slow when running in IE6", no suprises then, otherwise its like saying "English" is a slow language. - it depends on who is speaking it.
- santasing, on 06/20/2008, -0/+9Now the FOSS vendors like Red Hat, Novell etc. can include an enterprise class stack that is GPL'ed. At least in the server space, and therefore, in the web app space, this is big news.
- niznik, on 06/20/2008, -1/+9I take insult at that. I spend a GREAT deal of effort to ensure that my code is unmaintainable by anyone but myself. Efficiency? Pah, show me a good profiler and I'll show you us coding monkeys being out of business..
- mheath, on 06/20/2008, -0/+8It's too late for what? Granted it's years overdue but it's certainly not "too late".
- Relasz, on 06/20/2008, -15/+23How to spot someone who has no idea what they're talking about:
'Java is slow' - niznik, on 06/20/2008, -1/+9It is a shame you have missed out all these years just due to non-technical reasons.
- mccake, on 06/20/2008, -2/+10Slow is an unfair word. It could due to the poor implementation of the software. Java itself is highly scalable and portable. So when you say slow, you should upgrade the hardware and if you have a highly scalable java code, you just need to buy more servers and deploy your code on them. Easy!
- nakani, on 06/20/2008, -0/+8They need to make that option way more visible
- samthurston, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8nonsense. lots of people use java. it's like saying if MS decided to GPL WinXP it would be "too little too late" it's a great platform and thank god it's finally opened up.
- XternalHD, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8Finally.
- phibit, on 06/20/2008, -4/+11Amazing week for open source == ***** week for Microsoft.
- bobthedino, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7Sounds like an applet. And running anything in IE6 is bound to suck. You have my sympathy! In any case, Java is not inherently slow. Like any language you can write dreadful, slow software with it. In fact, most "enterprise" business applications, developed in-house by people who really couldn't care less, are going to be performance and usability nightmares... I've seen plenty.
- lemur, on 06/20/2008, -4/+11Yes, as a matter of fact it does. Tomboy is an official part of GNOME which requires Mono/C#
Other GNOME projects are also written in C# but they are not part of the official base. - jay019, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7Better late then never
- spydon, on 06/20/2008, -3/+10indeed. what, are you still living in the 90's or something, nmnnotmyname?
