Why is Security Center claiming s/he has malware installed? Is windows so insecure that the absence of that update is a definite indicator of infection, or did a scan fail so they assumed a malware infection, or do they tell everyone they are infected?
No need to apologize, we feel sorry for you that not many people use linux yet alone write viruses for it.
I hope you enjoying firefox, skype, open office and erm....see I can't think of anything else that would actually worth listing.
Let me start of by saying Linux is very secure and stable and I am a supporter. Buuuuuut, I do get tired of statements like "my computer is safe because I use X". Remember when apples OS was so secure it wouldn't ever need all the updates that windows does... well guess what, now they update about as much as MS. Any popular OS with a large install base becomes more of a target for the, well "hackers" for lack of a better word. Once an entire year goes by without a single CERT advisory directed at linux, well then I will shut up. Until then, obscurity is not security.
Well, good for you. I am happy that ***** like this makes the front page. Not.
Well, at least it's not an I-must-masturbate-because-Apple-has-a-new-product story, or some whiny story about Obama's people having a fit.
The security novelty never really does wear off. The periodic stampede of Windows users from the virus de jour, the annual security software subscription renewals, and they'll still occasionally get porked.
Not that I'd use that as an excuse to say NEENER NEENER NEENER. No, not me. A lesser man, perhaps. But not I.
Ubuntu sucks, I tried the latest version, I got nothing but error messages, horrible performance, and none of the programs worked. Then I searched google for a fix, and I find a fix for every single problem, I'm saved! right? Now all I have to do is spend hours going through 20 steps on the command line to fix every problem. Hmm, or I could just use windows vista, where everything automatically works, and I've never had a single problem.
You're quicker than me. I got this a couple months ago and took a screenshot of it, but only of the window itself. I didn't think to get a shot showing that I'm running Mac OS X. I was more convoluted and only blogged about it.
Ubuntu is not bad. It is not perfect for sure but it does work well and does make sense. Easy to install/upgrade/manage. Cool. Even my wife can use it to surf the internet.
I normally use Ubuntu as my file server, on an old desktop. Also installed Oracle 10g XE and some other stuff. Just leave it there.
And use Leopard/Win XP as my desktop.
Make an effort to contact a few "Hackers" (hate the term). Find out how many use windows for their own systems. If surveyed in a full room, say at a BlackHat conference, expect to hear crickets.
People use what they are comfortable with, provided they can do what they want. When MS and Apple cave sufficiently to the Content industry, expect a Linux revolution. Don't worry, it's getting easier all time.
am i the only one that still thinks that the trade offs of "security" in linux cannot match the available software, functionality... and... available anti-virus/security software in windows?!
I still find it a hassle installing stuff in linux compared to the double click in windows...
Was running Ubuntu, and was in process of unrar'ing porn when all of the sudden the whole thing froze. Couldn't even get out to console to fix it. That's Linux for ya.
