- Bamborzled, on 01/19/2008, -1/+39Contrary to what you might think, a large amount of people on Digg are still geeks and still check Digg for technology-related news.
- utoks, on 01/19/2008, -1/+37Wow this is pretty sweet. I'm definitely going to have to try it out.
For those who don't understand-- this tool will tell you what's really making your computer slow. It'll tell you whether its the software, OS, HDs, mem, pci's, cpu or whatnot. Then you can make an intelligent upgrade to your computer. - zmjone2992, on 01/19/2008, -1/+27read the description asshat
- drgmdp, on 01/19/2008, -0/+22how? because it is ***** TECH NEWS
- stoanhart, on 01/19/2008, -1/+20And it will help developers see where their programs are slow, and fix them accordingly.
I am liking Intel more and more these days. - ryodoan, on 01/19/2008, -0/+18Is there something similar to this for windows?
- Archon810, on 01/19/2008, -0/+11you do realize that it's 1 or 2 dudes at Intel who wrote this and Intel itself as a corporation has 80k+ people worldwide right? Kudos to these fellas though.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+9i've been using Intel's PowerTop on my Xubuntu notebook to maximize time on the battery alone in my lectures, and it's worked great. i can't wait to use this.
- adamkmccarthy, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8hehehe - what an utter idiot. he used EXACTLY the same comment on anthor topic not long ago. Copied and pasted. Check it out....
http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Ten_Tips_for_KDE_4_ ... - drgmdp, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6gear whore ^
- sukimashita, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6As Linus would probably put it: "Great job, now shut the ***** up, thanks."
- adamkmccarthy, on 01/19/2008, -1/+7hmmm, i think i smell a superiority complex in here somewhere but i can't quite put my finger on it....
- newprohibition, on 01/19/2008, -1/+6The obvious remedy is the Futurama solution: "smearing the engines with cheetah blood".
- Giga, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5Who is this "We"? As a software engineer I don't like it when I am included in such a discriminatory group. People use Linux for many reasons. I don't give a flying ***** whether you have made patchsets. That does not give you the right to proclaim superiority and disallow other users from using Linux. LSF is not a real and practical distribution, about all it is good for is a learning tool.
On the other hand, I agree with your dislike for the comments like "I'm definitely going to try this." Why not just try it and THEN post about it?
PS: Since when should Linux be an OS for engineers by engineers? Since when were users of open source software considered freeloaders? The software is free to be used by anyone. I would consider the people who pirate Windows to be the freeloaders. - akh4x0r, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5"Oh and by the way.... Me and my collegues"
Oh yes, "me and my collegues," you are very intellectual.
/sarcasm...but you're so smart, you probably don't need that - DaffyDuck, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4No because Windows has no latency problems.
...
Are you kidding? It could be useful in any OS. - Blandyman, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4You got your Doctorate in Asshattery from WHICH institution?
- stoanhart, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Still, Intel as a whole seems to be moving more towards openness.
- ninja0, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5HAHAHAAHAHA you're joking right?!
Windows is king of getting latency problems. - Bensign, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5Someone needs a chill pill.
- Ashex, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3dependencies in LatencyTop:
libglib-2.0-0-dev
libncurses-dev - Disfnord, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Don't feed the trolls
- ninja0, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Probably, windows has a lot of analytical software. The hard part is finding out what they're called :P
- Blandyman, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Does your dick get any bigger when you tell everyone your specs? Or does it just make you think it's bigger?
- TBBucs, on 01/19/2008, -1/+3Mobile Linux, Less Watts, LatencyTOP...Intel has been busy! Keep it up!
- UKsHaDoW, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2I'm also a computer scientist. I think your a idiot.
- bbardlbradd, on 01/19/2008, -1/+3Apple's Dev. tools in leopard have a bunch of things like this. BigTop (For analyzing multiple system stats), Spin Control for picking out why certain apps hang, MallocDebug, for, I think memory leaks, ObjectAlloc for something similar...
In case you're using OSX on PPC and want something like this... - inactive, on 01/19/2008, -1/+3"Please enable the CONFIG_LATENCYTOP configuration in your kernel."
Awwwww, I don't want to compile yet again. :) - bradleyland, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2This is a tool for developers. Most tools like this shouldn't be used in a production environment, especially on something like a server. When you add code to the kernel, there's always the potential that the code will contain potential security vulnerabilities.
- ninja0, on 01/19/2008, -1/+3Yeah.. thats where i stopped, I'm not sure if i want to do that. Could this possibly break my system? maybe... :|
- Archon810, on 01/19/2008, -3/+5BTW, it looks like it needs 3 patches to the kernel applied first. Definitely not as cool as I originally thought.
- adamkmccarthy, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2nah. STILL can't quite find where that god complex is coming from. i must either be a windows user or one of those freeloaders using linux maybe....
- DaffyDuck, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1What's your email address? Oh, and credit card number..
- adamkmccarthy, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2hahahahahaha. would you ever believe me if i told you that we used the same operating system. what a tool.
- akh4x0r, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1I'm not even in college. Dumb ass.
- geminitojanus, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Trust me, if you're using this tool you don't mind compiling again (as that's probably all you've been doing all day anyways).
- zmjone2992, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1there is one that runs in userspace. read the article guys
- qazwix, on 01/19/2008, -2/+3only for Linux :(
- Ashex, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2I suggest leaving digg then. It's only going to make you really irritated and pissed off. I extend an invitation to reddit, you'll like it a lot more. We're something to the kind of digg, but with a programmer base.
- 0ceanic, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2you're a dick.
- UKsHaDoW, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1I complied Linux straight from source. HARDCORE!!!1!1!!!!.
I'll laugh at you while it crashes, because you forgot to put stability patches on.
Infact any monkey can compile a os from source. Just takes time, and it would not be a good idea to use in a production environment. Use something stable like debian. - DustyinBFE, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1"Everyone knows the symptoms of latency" ... why does that me laugh?? hahaha.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Some months ago, but I am doing it right now. :)
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -2/+2this looks interesting, would it be of any use in windows to have such a program?
- nemesisa, on 01/20/2008, -0/+0I have also used PowerTop from Intel to optimize my laptops battery time. PowerTop is really a great tool to identify wasted CPU cycles and wakeups, and is a great contribution from Intel to Linux and the open source community.
And now they (with Arjan van de Ven in front, a long time Linux kernel contributor) releases this LatencyTop, which also got a great potential to improve the user experience and usability for Linux users and coming users.
Arjan van de Ven and Intel thank you for a great Linux tool. - ninja0, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1lol you think, huh? Yet me, can, at times, get choppy video with 1GB of ram, 7600GT, 2.5ghz amd athlon 3000+?
Those specs are MUCH better than what is required to run a video.
Yet I have gotten lag on my video before. My problem was a piece of software. And before you start sayin "oh you were probably using a lot of your resources", I wasn't. - inactive, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1Maybe they will get added to the kernel, from memory PowerTop required a recompile (although I think it was stuff that was already in the kernel)
- geminitojanus, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1How much is Microsoft paying you to astroturf for their product again?
- wukillabee, on 01/19/2008, -3/+2actually its 100%
theres a massive number of apple fanboys checking on his account everyday to see if he submits anything new, thats we he has 700k+ profile views... and no theres not that many accounts and your regular digg user doesnt know who the ***** kevin rose is or cares what he submits - rowlodge, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1so this will download my porn faster ?
