- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+37What a great install guide.
For anyone who's confused, the process goes something like this:
1) Insert CD
2) Boot from CD
3) Follow prompts - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14It's Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn with Ubuntu Studio metapackages in a single DVD so you can install it in one shot; also has a nice dark theme, low-latency kernel, and Ardour 2 + some others in a special repository. You can install it in a normal Ubuntu, see here: http://www.belutz.net/2007/05/11/installing-ubuntu-studio-theme/
Torrent file: http://ubuntustudio.org.nyud.net:8080/ww2/themes/ubuntustudio/files/UbuntuStudio_7.04.torrent
About Ubuntu Studio: http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS7380291045.html http://blog.joejaxx.org/?p=7 - Visceral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14If you already have ubuntu installed, you can change to Ubuntu Studio by doing the following.
Open a terminal and cut/paste the following two commands:
sudo su -c 'echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
wget -q http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
Now, open synaptic and refresh the package list. Next search for ubuntustudio and you should have a ton of packages for it. Grab the desktop ones and the others you might want. It does overwrite the old orange ubuntu theme with the new slick black one, so just be aware. - spencewah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Buried link is tubgirl-esque, do not click. You have been warned.
- djbon2112, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Am I the only one who gets a 403 error visiting "Ubuntustudio.org"? Is there any other way I can get this distro?
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8"Widescreen troubles? Downloading drivers? What year is this?"
Linux comes with more drivers pre-installed than Windows ever has. If anyone's ever installed Windows from an official CD (not a restore disc), you know exactly what I mean.
BTW, the widescreen issue is restricted to Ubuntu. Fedora 7 doesn't have that problem. - ctkroeker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Nice demonstration of Ubuntu Studio. Downloading via torrent and hope to try soon...
- drag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Hopefully it will reflect very positively.
The vast majority of the work making packages for Ubuntu Studio never came from the Ubuntu Studio folks.
Most of it comes from the Agnula project which created the Debian-based Demudi operating system. As the packages created for Demudi matured they were incorporated back into Debian proper.
Since 95% of Ubuntu comes almost directly from Debian they inherented the quality work from Demudi. This is what forms the basis for Ubuntu Studio.
64Studio itself is also based on this work. It is using Debian Etch and is the only fully open source commercially supported Linxu distribution dedicated for studio work.
So 64Studio and Ubuntu Studio can work together by making sure that the changes, updates, and improvements they do to the dep packages get incorporated back into Debian.
So it goes...
Demudi ---> Debian ---> Ubuntu ---> Ubuntu Studio ---> Debian AND Upstream developers ----> Debian/64Studio/Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Edubuntu/Linspire/Mepis/etc/etc
and
Demudi ---> Debian ---> 64Studio ---> Debian AND Upstream developers ----> Debian/64Studio/Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Edubuntu/Linspire/Mepis/etc/etc
That's how things should be done. And thusly the state of the art for Linux desktops progress. - zaqintosh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@DimensionalPunk
I unfortunately.. totally agree with you.
GIMP, I've tried so hard to like you, I really have. But as a professional photographer, you just don't cut it.. not even close.
I'm a pro photographer who loved linux, but can't live without photoshop. And the reason I don't like GIMP isn't because it isn't photoshop... it's just that gimp is absolutely terrible. A hack job. Granted its free, and I'm grateful for the time developers put in, but it just doesn't do the job.
Aside from the fact that scaling an image introduces aliasing (regardless if I use linear versus cubic), or the interface is completely counter intuitive, or I can't work in lab color properly, or the un-sharp mask filter doesn't work quite right, or brush sizes only come in tiny or smaller than tiny. GIMP is terribly... terribly slow. Just using the Brightness/Contrast .. and watching the screen repaint ... very slowly.... is frustration enough. Notice how it almost adjusts your preview in real-time while doing similar adjustments in photoshop? No it's not because you need a quad core xeon system, its because gimp is extraordinarily inefficient. Even the dumbed down features of Picasa seems to do a better job of optimizing speed (although its not advanced enough for my purposes).
For the love of god adobe... help us out! I'm willing to PAY for decent linux image/graphics software. And no that alternative that came out who
s name escapes me isn't good either. - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6If it's like any other Ubuntu, grub will automatically detect the other OS and add it to the boot menu.
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Internet=wireless card, I guess. If it's Broadcom based, install bw43xx-fwcutter from the universe repository (google that). You'll have to download it from http://packages.ubuntu.com then transfer the .deb to your Ubuntu install. Otherwise post on the ubuntu forums.
Widescreen troubles should be fixed in the next version of Ubuntu with Xorg 7.3, other than that search the Ubuntu forums. - Heilige, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Ubuntu Studio is a linux distribution based on the standard Ubuntu linux distribution but tailored for media creation, so yes Ubuntu Studio is in fact an entire OS.
- jus1haz2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Their main site seems to be down. You can get the torrent from here.

Remember to seed :) - UberGeek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3link to torrent:
http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/1167500/UbuntuStudio_7_04 - MiamiGuy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thanks generalloy. I had been looking for a means to get the sexy ubuntu studio theme on my current feisty fawn. :)
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Download from the Coral Cache of the .torrent I have in the above post.
Their site was dugg earlier today so it's still slow. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3This looks brilliant. What will this mean to other specialised distros like Studio 64 ( http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/mag/james.html ), one has to wonder...
- chokeaduck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Is a 10 Gig partition on my main HDD enough for it? I just want to test it out... Also, how the heck would I set this up to be dual boot?
- Milo82, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Linux is not hassle free, but you can figure out how to fix almost all your problems at sites like ubuntuforums.org. If you're going to use Linux you have to learn to take advantage of the community.
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wanted to add...
also try using ndisgtk if your card needs a Windows driver. You'll also have to blacklist the Linux wireless driver if you opt to use ndiswrapper, in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist See: http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/Networking/NdisWrapper_The_Ultimate_Guide/
You probably have to add that widescreen resolution to /etc/X11/xorg.conf amongst other things that differ with what driver you use. Again, it should be fixed with another release, esp. with the news that ATI is freeing their drivers. That means that Intel, AMD, and nVidia (through Nouveau) will have free drivers that can be worked on by Xorg hackers and these little niggles should be gone. - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that's exactly what kubuntu, edubuntu, xubuntu, and ubuntu studio are. They're part of the ubuntu repositories.
- 3vno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why no freecycle in unbuntu studio?
http://freecycle.redsteamrecords.com/ - Visceral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's Feisty Fawn but with a different kernel, newer theme and various audio/visual packages. Yes, automatix works just fine with it.
- Heilige, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nope I get it too, odd seems like a simple fix unless they are having hardware or hacking issues.
- TheRealToma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1BTW, if youre concerned about the "DVD" size, you can very easily install via 1 GB flash drive. Theyre pretty common these days and really handy. Failing that, try all these other methods! Would have been nice if Howtoforge could have covered a couple alternative methods! Sheesh!
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation - cphuntington97, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I hope that isn't the complete application list - I was hoping for Cinelerra too. I know I could try to install it myself, but the whole point of this distro is "it just works."
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+164Studio wants to package it, once they do it'll make its way into Debian, then into ubuntu.
- NateDiggle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm not privy to all of this but is this an actual OS or is it just a sleek, streamlined way to use the various programs? I ask this because at the end of the guide it shows a screenshot of the desktop and I see a firefox logo on it...and I 'm just wondering.
- anonym41414, on 10/11/2007, -8/+9Widescreen troubles? Downloading drivers? What year is this?
Go ahead, digg me down. I hear it kinda tickles. - fishfishfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you already have Ubuntu installed you can also install it using:
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudiolauncher ubuntustudio-video - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There are apparently licensing issues with Cinelerra. It's easy enough to add though, or even respin the disc yourself to include it (with Reconstructor maybe, or aptoncd), since they have an apt repository.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Note: doesn't work for amd64.
For me it says:
"Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio/dists/feisty/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-amd64/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)"
I saw a link to a torrent of the theme only some where, maybe I'll try that. - inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1

Download picasa ubuntu, picasa ubuntu repository, Install picasa ubuntu
http://ubuntu-8-1.blogspot.com/2008/08/picasa-ubun ... - dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"someone tell me in retarded language if this faster than the regular ubuntu?..."
No, it'll be slower if anything since there's a lot of stuff installed - Although, it *will* be faster (to setup at least) if your installing Ubuntu with the intention of manually installing music creation stuff since it's all setup - MarwoodUK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Download a liveCD and try it. Or borrow one from a geek. I have an Acer laptop, and from reading around it sounded like putting Linux on it would be next to impossible, but one day Windows was fubar'd so with nothing to lose I tried Ubuntu anyway. Everything worked out of the box, except for a couple of special laptop specific keys, which I never used anyway. The only problem I had was getting wmv files to play, but asking on the forums sorted that out relatively quickly.
- chillin411, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There are a couple of options if you're running on a slow connection and can't download the full ISO.
You can request a free CD from Ubuntu here (they say it can take up to 10 weeks, however)
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
Alternatively, you can purchase one for a nominal fee. (usually around $5-$6 after shipping, sometimes more, sometimes less) Here's a list of sites that will ship Ubuntu CDs.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/purchase - fishfishfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you only want that black theme, you need to add this line to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main
Fetch a key: wget http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Then do: sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-look ubuntustudio-theme ubuntustudio-icon-theme ubuntustudio-wallpapers - biggrz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm getting worn out by all the different flavors of a distro out there. At some point, they just need to be application packages on top of the normal ubuntu distro and marketed as such.
- nazsco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1all those apps are available trhu apt-get in regular ubuntu?
What about the gtk theme? - scarystuff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0is this a normal ubuntu underneath? Will Automatix work on this distro? I already got Feisty Fawn, but I have to reinstall that anyway on another harddrive, so should I go for US instead?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5I installed Wubi, and I am having serious trouble getting my internet to work on it. Not only that, but my native resolution for my 24" widescreen is 1920x1200, and the max Wubi shows is 1600x1200. I thought Linux was hassle free! Help is much appreciated, I really want it to work...
- DimensionalPunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3If Adobe would just release Photoshop for Linux I'd switch today.
- briancajulis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1how I love it if I could switch to ubuntu. the problem is it's a hard enough time to get the drivers installed with the Windows for my Presario, with more if I'm using ubuntu. haven't been able to try it, though. It's quite an effort to download seven hundred megabytes at the single sitting. I guess I just had to leave it overnight.
Also, I don't think my voice recognition software (which I'm using to write this now) is supported for ubuntu. - bigstarlet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@Zagintosh,
Have you tried "GIMPshop"? It takes most of Photoshop's toolbar functions and applies them to GIMP. YOu may want to give it a shot. - Theli, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1You can run portable versions of Photoshop CS2 on Linux under Wine, however that require either a lot of tinkering or an act of piracy.
- sybrfreq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0generalloy: if you have a broadcom wireless card, save up and get a pcmcia card. i use the dwl-g630 (d-link) and it works just fine. the atheros driver is enabled by default
the oss broadcom support will come, but right now it is buggy (especially on ppc/amd64) and has been for over 2 years. its like ati saying "you've already bought our product, why should we take the extra effort and make linux drivers?" - Nocterminus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I've used Kubuntu for over a year on my internet machine but still need XP on my gaming box. If linux could get some serious gaming support with a stable consistent OS distro path that game developers could support to make easy installed games for everyday users, then I would dump microsoft with all it's verification etc hoop jumping and probably a long lineup of people behind me , I bet..
- mwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1i havent installed this but it looks like its just ubuntu with a new look and some extra software that comes installed by default.. A user above posted directions on how to make your current fiesty install into the studeio edition.
- djbon2112, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0If WINE worked a little better, and was a little easier, I think this would happen. It's getting there, another year or so. But still, I don't know, with DX10 and all coming.
- Ngai, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2OK,..every1 i'm retarded..
someone tell me in retarded language if this faster than the regular ubuntu?... -
