- geodescent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This still requires you to have a CDROM drive from which the first Linux is installed from. What about a machine with no peripherals that is net-connected and running Windows?

"and that is enough..." for you.
You want to know a well known secret? not everyone is you, you are not everyone. Why can't you just live and let live.
P.S. I wonder how we all lived back in the computing days before cds and dvds, you know with 5 1/4" floppies. I mean what was the point? - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13There are also these (mentioned recently and probably gone into the front page):

Oh man that just gave me a mental picture of the Matrix -- programs hacking programs. :) Imagine the worm to end all worms -- it infiltrates a Windows box over the net and installs a Linux distro, and then nukes Windows. All you need is a FiOS connection to get enough bandwidth to the sucker so it doesn't take days to run... - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So easy my grandmother could do it!
- SystemsGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah, network boot anyone? This is the *real* way to install without a cdrom, etc, although it does require another computer on your local network.. ;-)
http://mywheel.net/blog/index.php/ubuntu-network-install/ - licoricewhip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried setting up an WinNT FTP server to hold my Unix images; a nice central networked location with a big drive and not a lot of other junk in the trunk.
I was dinking with FreeBSD, Debian, and Slack on various machines. CD 2 of FreeBSD had two files named the same: Cc and cc, I believe. Most inconvenient Maybe I didn't try hard enough because I am still a beginner, but, I just couldn't get it working.
Is it possible to mount an ISO at install time over the network, hopefully FTP and do a boot install from it? If so, I would greatly appreciate some pointers to get started. I would likely start from a floppy. I am secure in my technology to still use a floppy.
LW - licoricewhip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm, saw a mention of deamon tools ... it is plausible that I could mount the isos via deamon tools and set those drives as FTP roots... Ideas? Then, the issue is getting the "Boot from CD over FTP" aspect working. Appreciated.

...it's a Linux tutorial site...
and the article is more about saving disks than anything else. - ellisgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It should be called - install a bunch of distros of linux and couple other OS's..
And I can understand mutli-booting 2 OS's - but this is just insane! - yyzyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a Dell laptop with a dead dvdrom drive and installed kubuntu on it yesterday.
My method, though quite similar, was surprisingly easy. Just dump the entire iso contents to an existing fat partition (which is not holding another os, as we have to mess with the boot sector) and install the latest version of syslinux to this partition (use -f option). Rename isolinux directory to syslinux and isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg. Then chainload from this partition (I had grub installed on my hard drive) - it brings it up like live CD! I have used the same method to boot knoppix live from my hard drive.
@geodescent
You can easily use this method to transfer the install CD (iso) to a pen-drive (1 gb or more) and not have to use CD drive at all. Requires that you have a bios capable of booting from USB. - quetivity, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1my girlfriend can achieve this too, no seriously - http://www.netfreez.com/lubix

http://www.computing-tips.com/2008/02/23/how-to-in ... - apachehtaccess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The original reason I wrote this article was just to expand my knowledge of network/computer security on unix/BSD/linux operating systems. The plan was to create a multi-OS pc that I could boot into 1 of several OS's, then from another PC I would attempt to hack into the computer.. mostly just scanning to get baselines and get a feel for the differences.
- apachehtaccess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice tips yyzyyz! I like.
- apachehtaccess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The original reason wrote this article was just to expand my knowledge of unix/BSD/linux operating systems. I figured the best way to do that would be to have a multi-boot system. Unfortunately for me I didn't have any blank CDs to record ISO's on, and I also didn't have a floppy 3.5 disk. So that is how my journey into this subject-matter started.
To summarize what my article is about:
(1) Download the iso file
(2) Mount the iso file as a loop back device on a temporary directory /mnt/cdrom
(3) Save the content of /mnt/cdrom, which has the distro expanded in a recognisible form, into a temporary directory. (using dd to "burn" the iso to HD instead of CD)
(4) Reboot and use Grub, sourced from any other Linux, to boot up the kernal and initrd files of this temporary directory, thereby activate its installer if it has one or to conduct the installation from the fire-up GUI.
Technically speaking that is a perfect match. You simply unpack/convert the iso image in a Linux partition, use an existing Grub at a stage prior to an operating system has been booted, "replace" the function of isolinux (although Grub is starting to appear in many CD now) which would be needed if the distro is booted from a CD and fire up the distro to be installed. - khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@sinem

- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And *that* is why more evolved moderation systems have a "metamoderation" mode, in which people who abuse moderation capabilities (such as yourself) can be stripped of them."
Which is why many people came to Digg in the first place, since "abuse" on certain other forums consists of "not thinking the way the rest of the group does". Surely a fault with metamoderation; once a particular "class" or "clique" establishes itself, it keeps itself established by ensuring those who aren't "subscribers" lose their ability to moderate.
I like Digg for its moderation system. Everyone has an equally weighted moderation voice, and the community is in charge of each users' karma by choosing to read/not to read a user's comment or block them (or post humiliating stories about them, etc.). - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2How can I try out Vista on my Mac?

Just be sure to mount the disk image in Daemon Tools because VMWare sometimes does some weird things with disk images. This has worked for me with Vista, OS X, and Ubuntu.
