- shrewduser, on 09/25/2008, -0/+17let the app development begin :)
finally linux is taking off in the mobile phone space in a big way. - directrix13, on 09/25/2008, -0/+9So, its 1.0 now. Where is the full source code?
- ArthurSucks, on 09/25/2008, -0/+9Sweet! Now I can start working on my $999 app!
- worminater, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8...use the software you develop; thats all ;)
- loconet, on 09/25/2008, -2/+10meh, what's so special about this thing that you can't do with Apple's IPhone SDK?
... oh wait. - cawpin, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Well, you can tell people what you're working on for one thing.
- ComradeDomovoi, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Its amazing to see how much versatility Ubuntu has! :)
- PReitz, on 09/24/2008, -1/+7And get the 404 page of your choice :(
- ldog, on 09/24/2008, -2/+7There has to be 50 mirrors on the dowload page. Pick a different one.
- MegaJimmy8, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4I know, but they PROMISE it will be released by end of '08.
- skyshock1, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4Can we PLEASE port VLC to Android now???
- loconet, on 09/25/2008, -1/+5"You can do what you want and I can do what I want ..."
Not if one of us is using Apple :) - ethana2, on 09/25/2008, -1/+4Good luck with that!
(we're not as dumb as some Apple customers) - cawpin, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3How about somebody ports the Android OS to, say, a Samsung i760 to replace WM. That would be GREAT. :-)
Edit: I love WM6 but I think I may like Android even more. - brettalton, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3It's just so sad that Eclipse has been 3.2 since Feisty and will be so even in Intrepid (6.10 -> 8.10).
- Delta009, on 09/24/2008, -3/+6Why is the Eclipse server so goddamn SLOW !!! My download speed is currently 0.760 kb/s !!
- tonyscha, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Wow where 3 pages was actually useful.
Where he installs eclipse manually because the ubuntu repo didnt have 3.3 or 3.4.... My question is why are the ubuntu repos so far behind? Same with wine...
may I add... a nice write up! - MegaJimmy8, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2Damn, this would have been handy yesterday. Oh well, I got everything going anyway and I still appreciate someone putting this together. The emulator is pretty cool and you can get a feel for the OS in general since most of it is there.
- pinchduck, on 09/25/2008, -1/+3To prepare you for running Eclipse. Get used to s...l...o...w
I love Eclipse, it has lots of nifty features, but dang it can bog down quickly. - bootup, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Most applications don't require tutorials. SOME applications on the other hand designed for developers should require some technical ability to install-that way we don't end up with *#(*@*)# applications like on MS Windows. Now- if you think that using MS Windows means you never need a tutorial to do anything you are utterly mistaken. You clearly haven't tried to setup a VPN like CiscoVPN or any number of other similar applications.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2I am waiting for android developers to break out of the smartphone mentality, while that is the primary focus now, there are rumors that non phone related embedded apps (in car systems, other handheld non phone gadgets) are looking to it to help them provide better features and functionality. Given the way that it works, it wouldnt be that much of a stretch to start seeing some of these apps being dual use, desktop widgets as well as smartphone apps. The technology is more or less already there, its just an issue of getting people to think that way so they dont develop in a way that precludes dual use apps.
- stoanhart, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I love Ubuntu and all, but what versatility is that in this case? It can run a Java program (Eclipse) that has been working quite well on all three major platforms for many years now? Whoop-de-doo!
- ethana2, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1I don't know, are those versions somehow not in debian unstable?
- anylo, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1Links seems to point an obsolete version?
And downloading plugins is also quite slow. :( - fluxion, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1i really wish that taking off would've involved something like OpenMoko
android is cool....but i dont like the idea of having to use some restrictive Java API. that's all well and good for people slangin their wares, but i just wanna do ***** like slap perl scripts on my phone, maybe a few half-assed gtk/qt apps that only i want to use.
i can understand restricting access for commercial/official apps, but i want to be able to program my phone to do whatever the f*** i want.
tempting....especially considering im already with t-mobile....but i think ill wait for OpenMoko to put out a decent phone with a keyboard - MegaJimmy8, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1Took me HOURS last night, but it worked in the end. Good luck!
- fluxion, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1sorry man, but if you can do an "i am rich" app im willing to pay big
- Elranzer, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1Baby steps.
- mrBitch, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1@cawpin RE: " I love WM6 but I think I may like Android even more. "
The Android based phones will absolutely destroy the small percentage of Windows Mobile phones that are currently available.
Android will erode away any gains Microsoft has made (no matter how small) using their WinCE based OS.
Android is NOT an iPhone killer... YET, but it is easily a WM6 killer. - mrBitch, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1@loconet RE: " Not if one of us is using Apple "
Actually, you CAN do whatever the hell you want with an iPhone using the SDK and a jailbroken phone.
If you want to SELL the apps on the App Store, then you will fall under the "no fart joke apps" and "no itune competing apps" issues (which is not really that restrictive now, is it?) - DulcetTone, on 09/25/2008, -0/+0I miss using IDEA -- I didn't want to pay for an upgrade that might not be as well supported by Android as the freebie. IDAE is so much more elegant than Eclipse (or anything, really), though I have to say Eclipse is great at the price.
I got the new Eclipse plugins without undue slowness -- took 4 minutes.
tone - mrBitch, on 09/28/2008, -1/+1Wow, that would be great, considering the fact that Android does not have any multi-touch in their SDK. Idiot.
- bluechild, on 09/25/2008, -2/+0Who said something about Apple ? You can do what you want and I can do what I want ...
- jjustin01, on 09/25/2008, -5/+2Now someone just needs to port Android over to the iPhone. :)
- rockstar1o9, on 09/25/2008, -7/+1I call dibs on the flashlight program.
/What?! You accidentally the whole flashlight??!!! - inactive, on 09/25/2008, -9/+1pathetic. an os that needs tutorials to install everything.
- debtman7, on 09/25/2008, -13/+03 pages? Granted a lot of them are stuipd (really, do you need screenshots on how to click a link to download eclipse), but stilll...
While I like the openness of it, reading this and the development tutorials, apple has a much better setup in place. GUI builders, bindings, nice editor, etc. This whole article for the iPhone would just be 'download the apple developer tools, double click installer, done'. I'd kill for the iPhone development environment on a more open platform like android.
