- jrm125, on 12/22/2008, -7/+169For some reason when I picture a personification of Linux, I think of Kevin Smith in Live Free or Die Hard
http://www.hotflick.net/flicks/2007_Live_Free_or_D ... - Stonekeeper, on 12/22/2008, -1/+122I'm really not sure this is a good idea. Selling "linux" to people will end up confusing them because linux isn't a unified brand. I say let the vendors (canonical, redhat, ibm, etc) advertise their version of linux, perhaps each with a unified "powered by linux" slogan/emblem/whatever.
- atgmac, on 12/22/2008, -15/+101Go back to youtube.
- cosmicr, on 12/22/2008, -28/+105too bad there isnt any decent video editing software on linux yet. They'll have to make their entries using a PC or Mac.
- imoroN, on 12/22/2008, -3/+74Hi, Im a PC and I use Linux
- zadadka, on 12/22/2008, -12/+74Whatever it's fans might think, suggesting to Joe Public that Linux, in any flavour, is a viable alternative to Windows at this time is simply misleading, and will be the worst publicity it could get...3-5 years from now, maybe, but not yet.
Yes, I use it (both personally and as a SysAdmin), but I know full well that 70%+ of average users attempting to deploy it at home will struggle, revert to Windows, and perhaps never try again.
Linux is still vapour-ware for the average user. - Incidents, on 12/22/2008, -3/+47I hope it's as/even more creepy than the "I do it with Ubuntu" promotion.

- computershack, on 12/22/2008, -13/+53Will it show a bloke dressed up in 1990's clothing battling for an hour to get his wifi working with the immortal UK iPhone advert small text "Steps have been removed and actual activity will take longer to complete"?
- Elranzer, on 12/22/2008, -7/+46PC = (Windows, Mac, Linux, Amiga OS, Atari ST, Commodore, MS-DOS)
Non-PC = (Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Windows Server, NetWare, Linux)
Maybe you meant Windows = Games? - Venemous, on 12/22/2008, -4/+43Well when Acer names its version of Linux "Linpus", your gonna need more than commercials to convince people that it isn't a disease.
I'm pro-Linux BTW - theculchie1, on 12/22/2008, -4/+41I have visions of these being terrible
[insert joke about open source imitating an existing idea months later] - digitalpencil, on 12/22/2008, -8/+44yeh, digg him down that'll make it less true.
- Fabbyfubz, on 12/22/2008, -113/+146PC - Games
Linux - Programming
Mac - Homosexuals - bubba9999, on 12/22/2008, -2/+33please don't be stupid...please don't be stupid...please don't be stupid...
- Elranzer, on 12/22/2008, -10/+40I'm completely OS-independent. I work with Windows, Mac and Linux equally at work and at home, my own PC has a mix of OSX86, Linux and Windows 7 Beta. I've had smartphones and PDAs between all versions of Palm OS and WindowsCE/PocketPC/WinMobile.
I can't understand anyone's religion-like obsession with one OS. - Ouze, on 12/22/2008, -2/+31if this campaign is run like the real OS, then halfway through it, most of the people will leave over some stupid trivial argument about the theme music or something and decided to do their own commercial. The first team will release a commercial that lacks any music and is just a man talking at the screen for 26 seconds, with plans to add in 4 seconds later. The second team will release a commercial which has 6 seconds of video frames that are too large for most standard TV's, and be filled with fire and screen shattering effects. Both teams will factionalize into even more teams making an infinite amount of even ***** and less finished commercials.
- goobfacey, on 12/22/2008, -0/+26Linux, Mac, and Windows are all PCs..... Same arch (for the most part)....
- Phisolo, on 12/22/2008, -7/+32Do we have to make the commercial on a Linux box? I'd rather use iMovie or FCP.
- Ratteler, on 12/22/2008, -8/+32He did say "DECENT". Not "functional".
We need a Final Cut wannabe. - CoreyTamas, on 12/22/2008, -19/+42You're just stupid enough to think calling someone a homosexual is an insult.
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -4/+26Who is digging him down? He seems to be a linux user with a very interesting feedback. I'm a Linux user and I know that that is ***** true. Kdenlive is too experimental still. And cinelerra don't get me started, it's always crashing and doing some weird stuff. We need AT LEAST something equal to the movie maker, you know, easy to use and stable.
- charlietuna, on 12/22/2008, -0/+21Put *her* in the Tron Suit. Then we'll talk.
- pathouston22, on 12/22/2008, -9/+30Hi, I'm Linux. Lets play a game. Oh wait, nevermind.
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -23/+43Steve Jobs is a war criminal
- Ratteler, on 12/22/2008, -1/+21Elranzer, how would that make you OS-independent? Sounds more like your completely dependent on all OS'.
That would make you OS-Neutral. - Hawtshot, on 12/22/2008, -1/+21Sounds cool but I'll be disappointed if all they can come up with is Mac vs PC style ads, especially ones with a female Linux.
- eigenweasel, on 12/22/2008, -17/+37Actually, you made that assumption, not the original poster.
He might think both Macs and homosexuals are wonderful for all we know.
But when you saw the word 'homosexual', you assumed it was being used as an insult, and then complained about the very behavior you just displayed. - simg, on 12/22/2008, -2/+21@Elranzer: I'm similar and I can appreciate the pro's and con's of all the choices.
However, I do understand peoples religion-like obsession with open source OS's. Software is (or will be) far too important to have the power solely in the hands of corporations. My interest in Linux has nothing to do with whether Linux is better than the other choices. I believe in the need for truly free software and that requires that I use Linux where ever it is a suitable option. - MasterPain, on 12/22/2008, -2/+21It should really be about 30 different people saying I'm Unbuntu, I'm Sabian, I'm Dream Linux, etc. That would be more realistic.
- MacParrot, on 12/22/2008, -5/+23Not being unified is really holding Linux back. Someone should take the bull by the horns and do so. Linux unfortunately will always be an also ran as long as there's no one speaking for it outside of tech forums.
Which is really too bad as there's a lot there to like - pbhj, on 12/22/2008, -0/+18Hi, I'm a toaster / PS3 / SOC / blinkenlights building / ... and I use Linux.
- wonderbriefs, on 12/22/2008, -0/+16Hi, I'm a Mac and I also use Linux.
- greeniemeani, on 12/22/2008, -1/+16Metrosexuals also use macs.
- melat0nin, on 12/22/2008, -0/+15It's not a useless point to make, because it demonstrates the obnoxious reality of Apple's obsession with locking down their OS, even when the hardware it is sold on is essentially the same as all other "PCs". They just don't want their shiny OS running on anything but a shiny box with a glowing logo.
Pathetic, really. - CoreyTamas, on 12/22/2008, -2/+17Yeah. I guess I owe him an apology, huh?
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -2/+16that was insulting to gays
- Incidents, on 12/22/2008, -0/+13There is so much fail in those incredibly simple programs.. I am just going to assume you have never programmed in C before. NOT A GOOD REPRESENTATION OF FREEBSD.
- LostRiot, on 12/22/2008, -0/+13then why not just use windows, if you're going to have it anyway.
- SniperZero, on 12/22/2008, -0/+13Its NOT lupus.... linpus
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -3/+16Blender..!!
- kdoig, on 12/22/2008, -2/+14I'm a PC.
PC isn't a "unified brand" either - Mactard, on 12/22/2008, -0/+12I laughed so hard my white pointy hood fell off.
- Sonixunite, on 12/22/2008, -7/+19You can't play games on a Mac...
- Klowner, on 12/22/2008, -2/+13"official" ?
- Myztry, on 12/22/2008, -1/+12Just stick a Linux logo on all the websites and devices powered by Linux.
Once people start realizing Linux is everywhere their perceptions will change.
All branding really boils down to is the perception that if it's common, it's good.
Rarely actually says anything about the product's merits itself. - epynephrin, on 12/22/2008, -0/+11No one seems to get that. All "PC" Stands for is "Personal Computer".
Unfortunately, they can't say "Windows" because of some trademark, copyright or legal thing, so they have to go with the secondary term... Either way, it's building on a common misconception. - hangingspider, on 12/22/2008, -0/+11Linux, Mac, and Windows are all operating systems for PCs.
- superppl, on 12/22/2008, -7/+18His usage of Windows is HERETICAL!
In all seriousness, I've been using Linux for so long that Windows is a strange alien OS to me. I don't use it because it feels like a what a Mac feels like to Windows users. - V1ncent, on 12/22/2008, -1/+12The winning entry will be by a Windows user on a Hackintosh using a virtual Ubuntu install.
