- detachment2702, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38I logged on for the first time in months just so I could give you a thumbs down :(
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Linux has almost a 50% share in servers on the web (IIRC) and Linus Torvalds (and the many others involved in the Kernel development) is far from a brain-dead hippie.
To say that nobody uses linux is simply myopic and naive. - WMcMath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You're a useless troll, at least do it properly and don't make it so obvious.
- TheKrillr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This does not work on all distributions or systems setups.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I resent being described as a "brain dead hippie". I've been described as having hippie ideals, but am more pragmatic than most.
What we have with GNU/Linux is an operating system, a set of tools and a lot of superb software that has been written with the most altruistic of purposes.
It wasn't just written to annoy the makers of proprietary operating systems (though that's what's happened) - it was written to give ordinary people with ordinary computers access to a REAL operating system.
As a benefit, they also got a secure, reliable, fast and free operating system that's so good that it and its' variants (the BSDs) are used on over 80% of the world's web servers. Nobody contemplating a large web-based project would ever consider IIS - it doesn't work and is seriously insecure! - joels2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Um.. /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build is a symlink to /usr/src/linux-`uname -r` ... which is indeed the kernel source.
Edit: at least that's the way it is on every Linux distribution I've ever used.
Buried as inaccurate. - ddales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about staying on topic. It's about compiling a kernel, or sortof anyway, not Torvalds, or, My OS is better than yours, or, hippies.
- illicium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, because my feeble brain can't comprehend the complexity that is a couple of lines in a console terminal, unless there's a GUI app that compiles kernel modules, reads my mind via Bluetooth, and feeds my cat.
/sarcasm - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Maybe its cus hes a myspace freak? I think that site messes with people's heads.

"In particular, computer illiterate users would benefit immensely from this." - i440, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"because obviously its a run of the mill thing to have to build your kernel... especially when only having access to part of it..."
No, it really is. Back when I first tired Debian, I had to recompile my kernel in order to get my internet to work after I upgraded to the 2.6 pkg. I seriously think it would be useful if there a simpler, more automated way compile modules for your kernel. Then, if (for instance) the kernel distributed did not support you particular internet setup, all would you need to do compile the appropriate module. In particular, computer illiterate users would benefit immensely from this. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@Mictester
Fighting blatant fanboyism with blatant fanboyism is not helpful. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Wow Frank, Thanks for this Article
/rimshot - gimpbully, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Sure, I'll agree that people do use it. But have you ever used a real OS? something that really works? Something that doesn't reorder your devices on boot? where you can reload modules without effecting devices? I'm not talking windows, osx, or that ilk, get your hands on AIX or Solaris, then mod him down.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0Like many other things on Linux, this should probably be simplified.
- IS3GAI, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1I made an account just to digg you down, even if you are most likely sarcastic.
- Sp1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -68/+4Nobody uses Linux. Get a real OS, not some free toy developed by brain dead hippies!
What is Digg?
