- zleilndka, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35Submitters put "Ubuntu" in it so that it will be dugg faster.
- Shadowman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30Couldn't this be just "How to make OpenOffice run faster"?
- HalFTW, on 10/11/2007, -8/+33What a surprise. Another article about Ubuntu which has nothing Ubuntu specific in it.
- Cheeseness, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I don't know why people are digging you down. These settings are available for the tweaking on any platform.
- Gzero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I guess Ubuntu is the distro of choice, high popularity and free CDs. If lots of people back one particular distro, it's easier for it to become a major OS competitor than if several distros were backed.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20why is everything "how to make it faster on ubuntu" "how to install on ubuntu"
ubuntu (surprise!) is linux just like the other 100+ distros. - mcprogrammer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Most things are plug and play. The only things I have ever had to install myself are wireless drivers and video card drivers.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15/s/faster in Ubuntu/faster in Ubuntu at the expense of other applications/
FWIW, MS Office takes a similar approach, which is akin to readaheads and various ways of linking libraries more shrewdly. This former method is excellent provided you have a lot of RAM to spare and you don't power up/reboot very often. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13it could be... but if you find one with using Ubuntu and make sure to note it in the title, it most likely will be dugg more
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9> ubuntu (surprise!) is linux just like the other 100+ distros.
And "Linux" is a free software *nix just like Solaris and *BSD. What's your point?
The author went to the effort of coming up with a procedure that worked on his computer, and he's running Ubuntu. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Does it run on Linux without Wine? Is it Free? Is "Open" XML really universal (as in easily implementable by any developer in their WP app)?
- xyphur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8...in which hole?
Oh wait, that's right, there are none... - ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6That is mainly because of the hardware manufacturer, not because of Vista.
- joebaloney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, since most Linux users are aware that these tricks will work on their distro, who gives a crap? Are you so insecure about Fedora or whatever that you just can't help yourself? Five years ago Linux users were all about getting Linux to the masses. Now that it seems to be happening all non-Ubuntu users are suddenly like corporate managers whining because their domain isn't getting enough attention.
- awasson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Actually the increase in speed is fricken amazing.
I'm suprised at how much of a difference it made.
I'll try it with 30 undoes and go from there.
Good for any Linux & probably Windows too.
Toshiba 2410 Satellite P4 1.8GHz 1Gig Ram [Ubuntu Fiesty] - Qyasogk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I run OpenOffice on Windows XP and made all the changes mentioned... and it sure as hell speeded up OpenOffice for me. It makes good ol' fashioned Office look sluggish.
- joebaloney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Are you freaking kidding me? I reinstalled Vista on my wife's brand new Lenovo laptop (installing Quicktime had rendered it unable to boot) and had to download drivers for every single piece of hardware it had.
I put in an Ubuntu livecd into the same computer and guess what, graphics card: supported, Sound card: supported, Broadcom wireless card: FSCKING NOT SUPPORTED! But that's way better than I got with Vista. (and it was Ubuntu 6.06) - Greywhind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4emt41: use the Ubuntu Forums. I've never been to a better place for helpful support.
- jpjandrade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5As much as a troll that you are, you're still only kidding yourself.
- Jonny0stars, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Is it a sin to say Linux on digg, every one insists on using Ubuntu as a Linux substitute just say "Linux" people will know what it is

/cough - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@HPCELarry "supported games"
Your thoughts deceive you. Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter) need not support windows specific software. It's the games manufacturers who don't offer support for Linux. This is slowly changing. - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@solarwinds: "I really want to switch from Vista to Ubuntu......I just don't have time to look up drivers for all my various devices I have."
Drop in any LiveCD and find out if your hardware is supported or not. Once you have the ISO, burned it off to CD, it's just a matter of booting your system to it. It doesn't get any easier than that. I mean, once you have the CD it takes what... 1 minute, maybe 2 at most? You don't even have to use Ubuntu... you can try any LiveCD you want. - Darkhacker, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9Hopefully some time in the future the OpenOffice team will get off of Java completely. That is the biggest slowdown. Don't believe me? Try skipping all other steps and just disabling Java. It will make your heart stop when you see how much faster it is.
- charlietuna, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So what is the trade-off in unchecking the option to use the Java runtime? What does it get me if I leave it checked?
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Mostly just Wizards, and who actually uses those anyways?
- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5@0011digger
"the main resaon people shifting to ubuntu is that it is "supposed" to be fast and secure."
Well, whether or not Linux is faster is up to debate, but it is definitely more secure. Also, could it be since everyone has access to the source of Linux and many Linux apps there are more tweaks? Its hard to tweak a closed program. - Hermmunster, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9Ubuntu is much better at detecting devices and loading drivers than Vista.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5-1 offtopic
- ioannusdeverani, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow! Because it slows up my login, I didn't use the quickstarter, but without it, these tweaks changed OO.o from loading in about 10 seconds to in about 3 seconds. Awesome.
- jgtg32a, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I don't know how to do it in Ubuntu but I could do it in fedora
- xkrwlng, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4holy *****, it's a Ubuntu tutorial without 50 steps of command-line cut & pasting! and no sample .conf files! i'm impressed!
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hmm... something tells me that running a complete environment inside an alien environment is not going to run faster than running in a native environment. GTK = Gnome ToolKit. Educashun R teh winz!
- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@emt
The second option should be resize windows partition and create a new partition for ubuntu...
Then I think there is a slider that lets you choose how big. - regeya, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5OK, annoying. For once I'm going to complain about the phenomenon of using 'Ubuntu' as a synonym for 'Linux' because most of these 'tweaks' aren't even specific to the Unixy builds--with the exception of the systray starter, most of these will speed up NeoOffice startup!
And let's be entirely clear: Unless you're woefully low on memory, NONE of this will make OpenOffice RUN any faster, just START faster.
And guys, if you want to load NeoOffice at login, add it to your list of Startup Items and check the box to make it start hidden. And you're done. But if you've used OS X for any time at all you've figured out how to start apps at login. :-> - soren121, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Holy! OO.o just went from starting in 20 seconds to starting in half a second!
- Spo8, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Somewhat off topic, but just a general good Ubuntu tweak that I tried out for the first time today is turning down the swappiness in Ubuntu, as it's set somewhat high for people with more than 512mb of ram. I believe the code is "vm.swappiness (number)" The default is 50 when 10 works much better for users with a good amount of ram.
- Buelldozer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Office 2007 sucks donkey *****, just slightly smaller ones than OO.
I normally use KOffice in *nix, I can't stand OO.
Office 2007 is just retarded. - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you've never tried the Ubuntu LiveCD, you won't know whether your hardware is supported. I suggest you go to http://ubuntu.com and download the LiveCD ISO, then use your favorite burning app to burn it to a CD and start it. You'll be able to test everything, see if you like it, and see if it works on your computer. If it works, and you like it, the install usually goes a lot smoother than most Windows installs (in my experience.) Have fun! :)
- jessejoedotcom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't know why you're getting dugg down, you're completely right. Disabling Java should be the only step here!
- Lowfront, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow what a difference...!!
- Cheeseness, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No. In the same way that it's not OK to encourage people who don't know any better to think that Google is the only search engine, or that iPods are the only mp3 players, it's not OK to imply that Ubuntu is the only Linux out there.
- regeya, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Indeed--I wish I'd seen this post before I posted a much longer rant. You said it. Most of this even makes NeoOffice start faster.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Men, OOo is SOOOO slow, I have to wait an eternity when the only thing I want is to read a damn .doc document. I use AbiWord as my main writer right now, is light as hell and doesn't have all those features that are useless to me.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1MS Office is for fart huffers and OOo gets you laid. iPhone beotch!
Two words about MS Office: Ribbon - geriborg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Generally, the article offers up useful advice. However, I have one caveat: If an OpenOffice user adds extensions, please check to see if particular extensions require Java. For example, I use the Grammar Check "Language Tool." To function properly, Java must be enabled. (IMHO, Language Tool is an excellent extension, and worth the Java overhead).
- microft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does the word "Linux" still scare most people?!
If it works on one distribution it's almost certain it will work on all the other!
( Yes! You might have to take a few different steps to get there, but thats distro-specific stuff. ) - Dysl3xicDog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1WOO! Night v. Day I'm really glad this showed up here.
- loopyloopy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1didnt take us long to adjust to Linux (just the freakin' kernel man) as a synonym for GNU.
if one distro rises above the rest in popularity then that will be the new synonym. live with it. purists can digg me down now! -
