- apache2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Or just go to the google desktop website, click "Download"... choose to "Open with GDebi Package Installer" ........
Install. Done.
God, sometimes I wonder, why are these kind of documents written. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Now why would i want to use this in linux? my regular search tool works fine, and i have www.google.com for google so why do i need a toolbar?
- digduality2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11i don't get why this needed to be written. Fedora, Ubuntu and Suse all allow you to download the deb or rpm and just double click to install. it's not complicated.
- Schpariel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7WTF? Those are screenshots from the ancient pre-GNOME2 find tool.
The current one looks like this: http://www.gnome.org/~davyd/gnome-2-12/images/search-tool.png - amerio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The tutorial wasn't even needed actually... If you read the first two comments (by anmolk2k4 and apache2) they point out exactly this... Writting an entire article for an installation that just needs one click could make the installation look harder than it actually is. Downloading the package and clicking it is sufficient for ubuntu.
- WorldGroove, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I think you can relax and not worry that Google is gathering data on your computer through Google Desktop.
But... If ya wanna be sure... feel free to log network-traffic with ethereal/wireshark.
Let us know if you see any packets heading to Google for no apparent reason.(Be sure to post the logs and exactly what you we're doing when it occurred). - linkinpark342, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3if i'm not mistaken all the information actually stays local...
- tehkain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3um I hate to tell you but I am running at 1920x1200 on two monitors. You A: Need to select your resolution, B: install proprietary drivers(by just enabling them in the restricted drivers menu) or C: Reconfig your X server(or just open xorg.conf and add the resolution you want to use)
- MavRevMatt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If you can't ***** install a deb file you shouldn't be using Linux. Hell you shouldn't be using anything.
- macewan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@allenb, Silly comment. With computers playing such an important role in our lives these days it is important to cover our digital ass(ets). Click, install & run amok ease of Windows past wasn't a blessing. Have you come across articles on the hassles Vista presents with granting permissions?
For Ubuntu Linux users look here: http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories/ubuntu704.html
Works as advertised. Much nicer than Beagle. - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'd have to disagree. Google Desktop is nice, but I get a lot more useless results from it when compared to Beagle since it indexes all text files by default rather than just the ones in your home folder. Unlike on Windows, Linux has tons of behind-the-scenes text files that often gum up the results. Beagle also indexes more things, like IM logs, for instance.
- t3soro, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7it keeps the index on your local hard disk, it doesnt send info to google
edit: @TheFounder (reply farked up) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5how do you know?
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yeah this is hardly a worthy tutorial
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2Choice.
This argument gets said about a dozen times. No wonder companies are reluctant to program for/port to Linux. "Why do we want this? We already have this. Take your proprietary crap back to Windows."
Linux is about choice. Don't like it? Don't use it. - spacey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Jay -
Nope you're right, that's a Windows only tool (right now). It's not included in Desktop Search for OS X either. - goofballjm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Buried. If there was a blog that showed how to install this program on Windows, there is no way it would show up on the front page. This is entirely graphical. Even the most novice of linux users could do this without a tutorial.
On the other hand, if getting google adsense revenue is what he had in mind, he succeeded. Complete waste of time. - sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hope you are joking?
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3OMG! now Google and your mommy is going to find your pr0n!!!
- sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2perhaps i'm missing something here. Why would you want that crap cluttering up your desktop again?
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, when I installed it, for some reason it didn't add itself to my GNOME menu, so I had to do a little messing around to find that the command to start it is gdlinux (come on, why not googledesktop or something like that?)
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, they have a BIG dialog box that allows you to choose whether you want to enable that. It opens the first time you start the software. Unlike most software, most Google software actually has a very obvious, very informative message that's NOT in legalese that gets displayed when you start it, that allows you to enable or disable the "Advanced features."
- sirhomer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4It actually works quite well. It's a bit more integrated with Linux then Google Earth too. Kudos!
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How is it more integrated with Linux than Google Earth? If you're looking for real integration with desktop apps, Beagle is great.
- rjregenold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I read here ( http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40643 ) that they will "probably" add it in the future.
- yingjai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2He's a Google fan. He NEEDS to make a statement. Google's Desktop Search wouldn't have much of an edge over Gnome2, now would it?
- maddox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've had the Linux version indexing my hard drives and the whole fileserver at our office and haven't noticed any difference at all to performance.
I'm not saying that it must be better than the windows one, or trying to start a flame war. Just adding my experience into the equation! - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, when you start the software, it pops up a dialog box that asks you whether you want to enable the advanced features. Unlike most software, Google's software for the most part prompts the user in a non-legalese message asking whether the user wants their data to be sent to Google's servers.
- CaptainRotundo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Why should I install this I already have desktop search with deskbar and beagle?
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hey, I'm running at 1680 x 1050 right now! :) Most people in your situation have incorrect monitor/screen information in their xorg.conf file. Try doing a Google search for "[monitor make and model] xorg.conf" or, if a laptop, "[laptop make and model] xorg.conf" ...then copy over the "screen" section, especially HorizSync and VertSync - these two are very important.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not a toolbar, it's a desktop search that searches within documents. However, you're right, it's not very good at all compared to things like Beagle, which searches a ton more things like F-Spot tags and IM logs.
- stoic05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks I will try this, good guide and very clear screenshots.
- spankee666, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Anyone have a comparison between the Google Desktop, Beagle, and Meta Tracker as far as resource usage, etc? Also, can you share the Linux and Windows Google Desktop indexes with each other?..
I currently use Meta Tracker on my really old Fluxbox box. For my dual-boot laptop I have Google Desktop on my Windows partition, and Beagle on my Linux partition.
My only complaint about the Google Desktop is that the size of the index is really huge... I haven't taken a look at the Beagle or Meta Tracker indices since it hasn't been an issue. - balance07, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i have been using tracker for a while. i installed google desktop search last night. i'm gunna be uninstalling it when i get home. tracker does it for me, i even have it indexing my 2TB fileserver and it's quick as *****. Linux has gotten so amazing lately... with tracker and avant window navigator and compiz fusion. and i'm getting REALLY excited about elisa.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Although I consider Beagle superior to Google Desktop, I'm very happy that Google has released Desktop for Linux. Competition can only make everything better, and it's great to see companies like Google that have real influence in the market releasing great products for Linux.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Uh, no. Google Desktop, although deficient in many ways, searches within files, something that I don't think Locate does. Although Locate is fast because it indexes file names, Google Desktop actually indexes file contents.
- Mantees, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3You see... Linux is not anymore an OS only for people who understands informatics, of software like this would be never developed for it.
- yingjai, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2IMO, I prefer Vista's desktop search than Google's. I tried it when I had Windows XP and the way Google indexes my files was so intrusive. If you wanted to do stuff while it was indexing, you'd have to pause the damn thing and remember to unpause it when you're done. With Vista, I don't even have to manage it and it's not intrusive at all.
- bedesign, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0i need help i'm new i don't know what i have to do
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1why are your comments green and with a star?
- TravisEadie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Wow, great article will refer to all my friends, i found this while searching google.
- Mantees, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Both falls in the spyware category
- tribble222, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Or you could just use locate...
- felyduw, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Well compare this http://gnome-find.sourceforge.net/screenshots/main.png (gnome locate interface) with this http://desktop.google.com/en/linux/images/desktop_scrshot.jpg
User inteface does matter. - phishtree, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I don't know how I should feel about this
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4OSDir has just released a screenshots gallery to demonstrate the process.
It's a large gallery. Enable JS to navigate.
http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=844&slide=1 - LocDawg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Why would I want to install AIDS on my Ubuntu box?
- jackkerouac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1But not as nice as Deskbar and Deskbar searches Google and a dozen other search engines.
