- CalPaterson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17No *****. This isn't about that; it's about helping people use ubuntu to act as a router to increase their understanding.
- colin7151, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13so im confused, what is the point of this? as a learning exercise creating a router is great, but they use the gui. why in the hell would you want your router to even have X on it? if you are going for ease of use why not use something like pfsense (http://www.pfsense.com/) or monowall (http://m0n0.ch/wall/)? they provide ease of use without having all the unnecessary bloat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13That was cool! Thanks. Another good reason for me to finally use Ubuntu :)
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5maybe ur not using them right....
- rawn027, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6just use smoothwall, its the easiest linux firewall to setup that routes as well
- giancydni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7presenting configurations in Terminal Mode might scare new Linux converts.. as a true open source advocate, we must help new converts adopt to the Linux world the easy way.. as the song says.. "you have to learn to crawl before you can learn to walk.."
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why the hell use Ubuntu? For a desktop, nothing surpasses it, but as a router -- ?? That's just bloat.
www.ipcop.org -- I installed that in one afternoon, never had a network problem since. - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why?
http://m0n0.ch/wall/ - gameraboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm a big fan of IPCop - http://www.ipcop.org. Base system is great, and some seriously nice plugins have been developed.
- crythias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh - oh! Doesn't pay on digg to offer any alternatives to ubuntu! (for people reading this thread, some of the heavily - comments are indeed better, even if you don't read mine!)
Why you wouldn't want to do this: Because it's a waste of a perfectly good Operating System! Anyone can tell you how to make your box running x operating system a router. Then you turn around and realize ... a general purpose OS is probably not the best way to handle routing. - petard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok well it was assumed that the internet is from one and the network is on the other
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3
Both of the above have web interfaces too. - scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i dont understand some in this community sometimes. I got modded down for saying this article was a "nice find". wtf?
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pfSense.com even has a Traffic Shaper wizard that's pre-configured to prioritize gaming & voip, and lower priority of P2P, just click Next a few times, it's that easy.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@blehh
it was in response to giancydni's
"presenting configurations in Terminal Mode might scare new Linux converts..."
I just for got to put the @giancydni - blehh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@FuzzyCat: well, yeah, but that doesn't imply having X installed on the machine.
- Ryuuzaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Before I used pppoe, I used to disable nat and make the router just forward all packages to the linux router, having the external IP in the network interface... even then I was able to share the connection with the other computers... one can put a network card up with many IPs at the same time (eth0:1 etc.)
- jetpig, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5mono.ch/wall
free bsd based cd bootable routing software. 11 megs or so. love it to death - MihaiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this can be done using Firestarter too
- gadgetsguy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6My old 4 port Linksys router is in it's golden years, and is about to go to a better place.
How could I use something such as this to network 3-4 computers and give them all internet access?
I have several machines collecting dust, so if I could use one of them instead of buying a new 4 port router, this would be KILLER !!!
Article dug!

Best linux router software I've come across. - hasimir44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0maybe being "a router" isn't the only functionality. my debian based "router" pc may be "bloated", but so what. it's also a webserver, ftp server, etc.. my favorite thing about it is that it's always on and therefore i have a linux box to ssh into from work.
- gometro33, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Not sure why that second reply was dugg down. That was incredible!
- Ryuuzaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Just a question... why do I need two network cards?
I do that fine with just one. The ppp0 connection is established through eth0 and the connection is shared to eth0. - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have an idea!
Why not just install Ubuntu Server edition (pretty much a REALY stripped down ubuntu with only command line.)
Make sure all the drivers work, and stick this on ur 7 or 8 year old computer. You can then admin it from some other computer.
They also provide an RPM. (Wich you may use with Ubuntu in exchange for worse performance) - G_money, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yep clarkconnect is great
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4And what have we here... another Ubuntu story!
"oooh aaah Ubuntu can be a router!"
So can about 327 other distros, with several doing it better, easier, and faster. Smoothwall / MonoWall come right to mind. - robgolding63, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Amen to that! IPCop is really nice, small and secure. And some of the mods are great! Although that said, it does look like you can do a lot with the Ubuntu router - as long as you can afford a more powerful machine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1freesco is way better
- scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8nice find
- crythias, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0http://www.smoothwall.org. If you're going to do it anyway, why not do it better?
While this might irritate some, others might appreciate the dansguardian/antivirus mod: http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8488

Don't want to do it yourself? http://www.smoothwall.com - madmax85, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2netfilter in Linux is not that good, openbsd packefilter is more suitable, its alot faster and you can do alot more with it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I got 50 ubuntu disks in the mail last month, all of them are defective. :-(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1crap, opera double post cache error, mod this down.
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Let's just say his mother is in the DMZ, if you know what I mean....
- screenienerd, on 10/12/2007, -27/+7Linux as a router is old news.
