- ch0p57ickz, on 08/10/2008, -1/+67if you don't like Linux, it's okay. Don't use it, and don't read this article. It's that simple.
- HCviolence, on 08/10/2008, -1/+23You don't really have to break up the section by distro but you should based on desktop environment. This is a tutorial on how to customize gnome.
- Lucidia, on 08/10/2008, -1/+22The title's a bit misleading; this is very GNOME-on-Debian-based rather than a general guide for every Linux. The...categories are good, though very much tailored to the author's own preferences.
- Archer007, on 08/10/2008, -4/+22We don't promote malware here.
- n0ia, on 08/10/2008, -5/+21Last I checked, Ubuntu/Debian was not the only Linux distro out there. Also, Gnome is not the only desktop environment. Rather than say "How to: Customize your GNU/Linux desktop in 7 easy steps" it should read "How to: Customize your Debian based distro desktop running the Gnome desktop environment in 7 unexplained steps."
APT, the Advanced Packaging Tool, is not installed by default on non-Debian systems (at least none that I'm aware of), especially not on Fedora, which is one of the more popular distros aside from Debian/Ubuntu.
This "How-to" doesn't even explain that themes come in archives which you don't have to extract, which can be misleading to new users when they download a theme package that by default tries to open with the archive manager.
What happens when someone tries to install AWN and doesn't have Compiz? Is the dependency going to be installed, or can their computer even handle it?
This article should have never even been submitted. And look at the comments. The original author doesn't seem to care at all that the information is poorly delivered. - secrity, on 08/10/2008, -1/+15For some things, such as adding packages or stopping and starting processes, using the terminal is easier than using a GUI.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -3/+15Thank you, we were dying to see your desktop.
- diablozx9, on 08/10/2008, -2/+12why would you ruin a perfectly good system with vista?
- opnickc, on 08/10/2008, -0/+10amarok
- LemonChicken, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9I currently have a Toshiba laptop running XP. How difficult would it be to install Ubuntu and dual-boot it? Does anyone know the pros and cons of this process? Is it worth it?
I appreciate it! - simpleboy, on 08/10/2008, -3/+12Sucks in comparison to this http://bp3.blogger.com/_8b22-pRvxWc/R9y7mOzR9yI/AA ... (from http://goodbutbad.blogspot.com/2008/03/my-beautifu ...
- bieber, on 08/10/2008, -5/+13Dugg for GNU/Linux. Just sayin'...
- brwright, on 08/10/2008, -3/+10Exactly. Same goes for those who don't like Mac, and especially those who don't like Windows.
- picpak, on 08/10/2008, -1/+7Not only do you waste our time with your desktop, it's ugly and tacky anyway. At least you're playing Boston.
- bieber, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5There are a lot of reasons. I gave KDE 4.1 a try lately, but I just feel much more comfortable with the window and widget behavior of GNOME still. That, and most of the apps I use are GTK. QT apps still look okay in GNOME, but it's really hard to get GTK apps looking decent in KDE.
- MadHarvey, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5Yeah. I pretty much stay in Emacs all day, except if I want to edit something. I generally use Vim for that type of thing.
- sedaghatfar, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5I also have a Toshiba laptop running XP, I downloaded Wubi and dual booting is very easy from there
It is easy, you pick the distro and that's it. The cons are you can only pick from ubuntu derivatives but it is worth it - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -3/+7GNU is the software, Linux is the kernel, GNU/Linux is the operating system. Geez.
- ryan83189, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4My current desktop, looking at a picture of your desktop.
http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screensho ... - t0ny, on 08/10/2008, -1/+4sudo apt-get remove windows-vista
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3What if I don't use it, don't know if I like it, and read the article?
- ImperfectFreak, on 08/10/2008, -9/+12GNU is the operating system, Linux is the kernel. You do not know what you are talking about. Gnome would have been a better title because as far as I can see that is all that is referred to.
- Aurabolt, on 08/10/2008, -1/+4Sabayon Linux - http://www.sabayonlinux.org/
If anyone is looking for a Gentoo-based distro, extremely easy-to-use, tons of out-of-the-box functionality (even Bluetooth) and KDE or Gnome... I suggest Sabayon. Very sexy IMO (toying in VMWare under XP SP3 right now). I prefer this over Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Arch only because I run a Pentium-III server with a headless Gentoo and I prefer emerge/Portage over aptitude, as well as a few syntax differences. - thevoiceless, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3Have you seen what's being done with the Murrine engine?
- deadbaby, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3Comic Book Guy runs Linux? Cool.
- Latentsage, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2You still brought it up.

- pHreaksYcle, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2I like XFCE, but it's a niche environment. I use it on my laptop because it's light and beautiful. Something that many people wouldn't know is that the amount of themes it has out of the box is amazing. It perfectly emulates XP with the one theme, and a Mac desktop with another, with a total of probably 10x the themes that Gnome comes with.
All in all, it's a wonderful environment and people should give it a try. If you are on Ubuntu or any variant with apt, you can install it alongside whatever you have now by running
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
Then when you are logging in, click sessions and select XFCE to use it instead of Gnome for a session. Never know, you might like it! - arjie, on 08/10/2008, -5/+7I don't mean to rain on your parade, but don't you find consistency appealing? Some icons are flat black-and-white, some are flat colour, others are 3D. Some items have blue on black and others have black on grey and then some have white on black. Personally I like a nice unified appearance, but hey, the point of allowing that much customisability is to have you shape it to your own tastes, [ however bad they are - just kidding ;) ]
- ThantiK, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2You know - the only thing keeping me from staying with linux is the fact that WoW runs so horribly on it even with the latest wine and a decent computer. I built an Arch Linux for myself thinking by building the distro myself, it would get rid of the problem. - Nope - still took a major performance hit when I played the game.
If WoW had a linux client - I wouldn't have windows on my box right now. Plus side being that I did get introduced to Teeworlds from my little endeavor into linux distros.
I've tried CrossOver, I've tried building all the way to the kernel level for speedups, I've even gotten down to the nitty-gritty and modified code to try and fix things and still got a massive performance hit. (And running in OpenGL is a JOKE since it turns off hardware-mouse)
Linux = AMAZING...unless your a gamer. =( - archlich, on 08/10/2008, -1/+3Baldurs Gate 2.
Afk. - LemonChicken, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2Thanks, for the response guys. I knew Linux users would help me. Appreciate it.
- NexusV2, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1See you've just gone and spoiled something so simple.....
- klitzbtc, on 08/10/2008, -0/+120844 seandalt 39 19 92072 20m 10m S 49 1.0 0:02.83 avant-window-na
See that 49? That's CPU Usage(%) for Avant-Window-Navigator.
Hahahahaha!
Yes. - BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I would think it clear that the poster learned English as a second or third language. Considering your screen name is one of a brand of cars made exclusively "for the people"; I'll assume - grammatiknazi, korrekt?
- rameznabel, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1ok i have toshiba tecra . kinda old but fine and it runs ubuntu as second boot oprating system and it works fine . first i expect that u have to read some install ubuntu articles because since you get the concept of the installing linux every thing will go fine but take care all newbies trying to install linux some times erase and format there HD by the lacking of the concept of the installing .
- diablozx9, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1hmm, I like the wallpaper.
- sn00kie, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1Anyone know what the first theme is? (the black one)
Thanks! - pHreaksYcle, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1I completely understand why no one has responded, no one wants to touch the subject of a new potential Linux user. That includes me :P
Best advice I can give you is to use a Live CD and check it out. Know that the Live CD will be slow as balls because you are running your computer entirely from your RAM.
Negatives will include issues with your wireless card, (most likely solved by searching "Toshiba "model name" wireless Ubuntu hardy" on google) and being harassed by your peers. I urge you to give it a shot. It's worth it!
Need any more help or have any specific questions, hit me up on AIM with the same name as my digg account, or that same user name @gmail.com - qber, on 08/10/2008, -1/+2Because there's more to a desktop environment than eye candy.
- Chris_F, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1Dont let the naysayers distract you. If you want to test a distro out without any hassle, then download the Slax LiveCD. It has an option to load the whole CD into ram, to get rid of the lag most Live distros get. It uses KDE 3.5 and has good Wifi and hardware support.
- 3leggedHorse, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1I got a tosh with ubuntu booting using wubi. It works but it sometimes hangs just pull the battery and restart.
- NexusV2, on 08/10/2008, -1/+2Hahahhahaha!!!
No. - BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 08/10/2008, -1/+2Fedora was my first attempted foray into Linux. I hit my first snag and looked for community support - found no one willing to help me unless I made some wildly wrong statement as fact and awaited the snooty retort. I switched to Ubuntu and got tons of friendly support from the community.
Fedora is powerful, but no more so then Ubuntu just because of its steeper learning curve and elitist community. I'd rather not spend the mojority of my time on a computer tweaking an OS, and if I do want to tweak Ubuntu gives me more then plenty of space to work. - jgtg32a, on 08/10/2008, -2/+3GNU/Linux what's that is it some kind of Ubuntu?
/Sarcasm - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1Don't comment on Digg. ;)
- ThantiK, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1also - since I can't edit after 5 mins - if you really are serious about linux and building a system of your own, after I took the time with arch linux - I was in love =)
pacman was amazing in setting the system up, and the beginners guide they supply you with is short and sweet and leaves you with a very minimal system to build whatever you want upon it. Also - editing as many config files as I did, I have a much better understanding of what boots what, why, where, and how. - deadlikeoscar, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Environment ...
Pretty sure anyway... - vwgtiturbo, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1You have 'saw', eh? Wow... With that level of education, I am just clamoring to actually read the article. It's funny how a Windows guy/girl or a Mac individual can make a mistake like that and everyone just tears them up; but if a Linux submitter makes the mistake, everyone just rolls with it. Digg really is FULL of kids now, isn't it?
- golvin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I noticed many articles like this in Digg recently. =(
These people write poor-quality articles without proper understanding and post them on Digg just for fame.
Someone please educate them properly. =(( -
