- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11 Nice guide. OpenVPN can be a little daunting to the un-initiated, but with a little work it is the most secure, fastest, and widely supported VPN system imaginable.
If only PopTop was maintaned, and didn't suffer from those darned CHAP/PAP weakness's. :( - robbyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wrote up a openvpn howto for pfsense recently:
http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Setting_up_OpenVPN_with_pfSense - Futurepower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It may be better to refer to the original:
http://www.itsatechworld.com/2006/01/29/how-to-configure-openvpn/
Also, it should be mentioned that configuring OpenVPN could be much easier than it is. It's unfortunate when thousands of users must spend time configuring, rather than have one or a few people make configuration easier. - hpmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hamachi.cc
with
ultravnc.sourceforge.net
were extremely easy to use
honestly it took more time to install then configure
I spent the past two days messing around with windows but couldn't get anyware until i found these.
I like realvnc too,
If you dont need filetransfers use realvnc, but ultravnc has file transfers so I'll opt for that
even have it running on a 233mhz p2 64mb of ram
uses about 5mb of ram - sublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just love these howto sites that make you hit next, next, next, next and load a new page every few paragraphs. It's annoying as hell. I didn't find the howto any more informative or easy to understand than the official openvpn site. Actually it was too distracting with all the huge ads all over the place.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Where's the linux tutorial?
- hunchback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3actually, security now is more like "this day's intro of tech", cos even when they try to go in-depth, it cannot be understood and they never do a step by step. But I did learn of many topics from there, that grcsucks.com is a bit of an eye opener though, thanks.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I've been waiting patiently for this as well, but is it ever going to come? He's been promising this since a very early episode of the Security Now podcast where they covered VPNs. Given that it's going to be free and Steve Gibson is a good source for this type of info, I'm willing to wait for it. But it's gotten to the point where I half believe it's never going to come out. I hope I'm wrong.
- ronjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4He he, Steve Gibson is a lot of fluff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hamachi w/ termserve owns both of those bloatwares.

Oh yeah, and it works on PC, Mac and Linux. - runningnak3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://anonet.org is a good example of what can be done with OpenVPN. It truely is a very powerful tool.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2knowing devs who created got2mypc, they use windows internals to streamline network performance, whereas VNC just copies over pixels. So logmein might use the VNC method which would require a broadband connection.
- fjc8, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Steve Gibson is not a reliable source for any kind of information.
http://www.grcsucks.com/ - fjc8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IIRC, LogMeIn uses the VNC protocol. I would assume that the Citrix-backed GoToMyPC would be based on the Citrix ICA protocol, which, along with RDP in Remote Desktop/Terminal Services, beats VNC in nearly any situation.
- TechCF, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Ok to only get remote desktop. But to secure all internet traffic on my computer when I am travelling, and to get remote access to my media library gotomypc/logmein is no good.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt that GoToMyPC uses ICA, although it might at some point. Citrix purchased the company behind the "GoTo" products a year or two ago, and renamed the company Citrix Online. While they may eventually get the ICA protocol in there at some point, I doubt it's there yet. The GoToMyPC product worked very well even before Citrix came along.
I've also tried Hamachi (now owned by LogMeIn, Inc. BTW) and RDP and had similar performance issues. I also tried Hamachi using VNC with equal failure. I make the connection, but using the connection is downright painful. Again, as with LogMeIn I haven't had time to do a tremendous amount of research. It might be time to contact my ISP and see if they're mucking anything up.
Anybody else have similar issues with Hamachi or LogMeIn and have suggestions to share? - DrBones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Logmein does not use VNC as far as I can tell... I have been a longtime user of the free, pro, and rescue products and find them to be excellent in terms of performance and features. I also make extensive use of hamachi and some corp vpn products. Everything depends on the situation and requirements, but this guide to OpenVPN seems great.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've been a long time user of GoToMyPC but finally gave LogMeIn a try since their basic product is free. I haven't dug too deeply into it, but I have found that LogMeIn's performance is very poor when compared to GoToMyPC. And I don't mean the difference you'd expect or tolerate between a paid product and a free product. I mean the level of performance of LogMeIn has been unusable for me. I know that many people use it successfully, so I'm still going to dig a little deeper to see if I can figure it out.
- craig35, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Another good troubleshooting OpenVPn article.

- zane9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been running OpenVPN for months on a WIN2000 server, with WINXP clients connecting. But I couldn't find anything about Linux on the client-side in this article. Why is it in this section of digg/unix-linux? Did I miss something?
- NYCortex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is a pdf gibson's OpenVpn step by step guide. But the links don't work at the bottom, and I can't find the html version.

http://www.jaec.info/Firewall/VPN%20Firewall/firewall-vpn-introduction-1.php - Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Quick upload speeds? iDisk speeds are terrible. That's the main reason I would cancel other than the email being full of spamt
Edit: Uhm wtf this belongs in another article....... - marklar69, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Whats so hard about openVPN, I use it with my parents business comps to maintain them from my house. If you need to setup a VPN then you Polly have to know how to do it.
- brizznady, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Nice but I'm still waiting for Steve Gibson from GRC.com to get his guide online.
