- thelastknowngod, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41apparently they make these things call OTHER DISTROS and ssh works the same way on them as well...
why not just say Linux... there are a lot of options out there. thats the whole point. - stiankarlsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28I've really taking a liking to SSH over the past few weeks, gotta say. It's fast, secure and "just works". I really like the -X option as well (X11 forwarding)
good stuff - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23Human kind discovers ssh -X . What's the big attraction? It's certainly not news as it was possible back in the 90s.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12VNC is just too slow for me compared to RDP. I prefer to SSH in with X forwarding and run apps on my local X server. It's a little more complex to setup but the end result is much more responsive and usable.
- thinkingserious, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13@specialK16
Try this from within Ubuntu: system> preferences > remote desktop - dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yes there is. I know RealVNC and TightVNC both run on Ubuntu, and both have an alternative web-access built in
You access it via http://my.computer.com:5800 (instead of :5900 for regular VNC), in any browser that supports Java. - kafitz22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Nothing can't beat the speed of freenx to remote access. I wish there was freenx for Windows as well.
- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7the fact that you can set up dynamic port forwarding means you can use ssh as a secure proxy also. Get around your work or schools domain blocking or maybe ssh home if you left some files on your pc. SSH FTW.
- guttertrash, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9
has anyone noticed how even on technology websites where the target audience is supposedly knowledgeable,
the content is always really dumb old stuff that everyone already knows. i mean wow vnc wow ssh, oh look x via ssh. wow oh wow. how fascinating. - terminalpariah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7http://xrdp.sourceforge.net/
Access your Unix desktop with Windows' built-in RDP client. - daverave999, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Or possibly VNC?
- SirDiggalot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7(sigh) Yeah, I know... so many new people to Linux. Guess I have to move on to FreeBSD now.
- johnjreiser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I have several Macs that I administer using ssh...
Why not expand it to all modern Unix-ish operating systems? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3http://www.nomachine.com/ FTW
- synthox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Webmin can do everything you need with a nice easy user interface. I have used it for years.
http://www.webmin.com - chrissilvernail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Wow. My experience has been the complete opposite. Remote Desktop has been far superior to any vnc server/client I have used. That is one of the main reason I still have windows boxes, as opposed to just mac and linux. Remote Desktop is built in, and works flawlessly. VNC takes more configuration and sucks.
- xamox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5http://nomachine.com/
Give that a try, it hauls, even try the demo with a super slow connection and overseas, you'll ***** yourself. - BobbyOnions, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You can't do an unsolicited RDP session in XP Home, only XP Pro.
- takeda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I did, and I don't regret, for servers it seems to perform much better, also I love how everything is nicely organized, no directory mess like in linux...
But as for eye candy GUI the linux wins. - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3To RDP in Vista you need Vista Business or Vista Ultimate. It is no longer available in Home Basic or Home Premium.
- oilcan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5you people bring a whole new level of eliteness to the dork-snob echelon. Please try to think beyond the boundaries of your massive throbbing brains and realize there are people that are entities entirely separate from you that are in different stages of learning in their progression away from windows, and stories like this are quite useful to them.
oh, and sirdiggalot, you made me lol :P - Churnd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Use the open source port: http://freenx.berlios.de/
I like this over VNC or RDP, because it's a set it and forget it kinda thing. This has allowed the regular users at our office to log into our remote computing cluster and get some work done. Trying to explain ssh -X or VNC was a pain. FreeNX does it all out of the box, and it's a secure connection to boot. I even think NX is faster than VNC. - Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There are modern operating systems that aren't Unix-ish? Maybe Plan9 or something...
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm sure you'll go back if you ever want to do any customizing of your system, thats def one of the major reasons I still use Gentoo. My Ubuntu experience has been horrible... and in fact its been a ton more frustrating that Gentoo ever was. With Gentoo at least, you know things don't change unless you want them too... Ubuntu on the other hand has warped my system multiple times, such as killing remote desktop, killing tv-out and messed up my xorg.conf like no other.
The learning curve I would say is harder with Gentoo, clearly... but until a distro can manage my system as well as I can and not pop up unwanted surprises on me, I'll be sticking with Gentoo.... not to mention for me at least it's fun to be able to able to control an aspect of the system if I so choose... and be able to do it in a somewhat easy manner instead of running around in gui package mangers that tell you that you can't uninstall half the programs... why bother to list programs in Add/Remove Programs if all its going to do is tell you that you can't? Seems like something M$ would do... - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yea... i tried this on Ubuntu feisty... and one thing is for sure... it hasn't been consistent whatsoever. After using it as a media comp for a few reboots and using remote desktop to control whats playing, remote desktop just died on me completely, as well as tv-out stopped working on the video card. Does Ubuntu have a habit of doing this? I've tried on another box too and have had similar weird things happen that change from reboot to reboot. I personally have given up on Ubuntu as a 'simple' solution for Linux due to its instability... and def going to keep using Gentoo on my box, and now on the media comp too.... at least it doesn't do anything random...
I gave it a shot.... but it probably just needs a bit more time :/ - Pestilence, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2NX is where it's at for remote desktop on linux. There's even a windows client.
- SignorDildo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've been using Xming under XP to access KDE under Debian from a colinux service exporting X desktop and applications for years, and it works a treat. It'd be even better if I could export the XP desktop and applications in the same way. Anyone up for writing an API hook to export an XP application as an X server?
- BobbyOnions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"gradually advancing"?
I was using VNC in 1997, when it was an Olivetti product. The company I worked for had all Olivetti Unix (SVR4) and we used it extensively. - petenutz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2NX ftw!
>I wish there was freenx for Windows as well.
M$ would sue i think. - Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2> Connecting to a PPTP VPN for example
If you ignore Microsoft's protocol-of-the-week, *nix has been fully functional as a desktop, workstation, or server for years. If you treat 100% effort-free interoperability with the current version of Windows as a requirement, you've implicitly eliminated *nix from consideration because that isn't possible. - xmodem2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm not asking for this. I hardly think pptp can be called the Microsoft protocol of the week. It is an open standard supported by Cisco, and many other open source products.
The implementation of the underling protocol is there, it is open source, it is complete, and it is compatible - I am connected to it on my mac right now, which uses the same open source components for PPTP connectivity as linux does.
I don't ask for effort-free interoperability with the current version of windows - but before I can use a linux desktop or laptop I expect to have to put in the same amount of effort to get *nix to operate with the various environments I need to use my computer in as I have to put in for my mac. And I believe this day is still a long way off, hence my previous post. I'll lok into it again in 3 years. - toasterwaffle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2i think that's VLC which is insecure (all keyboard stuff is sent in the clear).
if you were to do this, you'd use putty anyway to create a tunnel for that connection. - mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Vista's remote desktop kicks ass, no matter what you say. Works flawlessly with minimal setup and low bandwidth and Compositing works perfectly over it.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2kssh
- thnksnow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ya freenx has been around for awhile, its great if you need a GUI http://freenx.berlios.de/
- stewdick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would like to add another vote for NX (www.nomachine.com). I would NEVER use anything else. It is, quite simply, as if you weren't "remote" at all!
- thinkingserious, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5@thelastknowngod
Your right, I should have used Linux, I still have Ubuntu on the brain since I made the switch... I do miss my Gentoo from back in the day... - stewacide, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3This is really easy as could be: just turn on remote desktop. It will even advertize itself on your network with zeroconf. My Ubuntu home server runs headless: all administration happens through VNC and it's 100% reliable. Just make sure you have desktop effects turned off because I believe that breaks Vino (at least it did for me).
- ElRayQuieres, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2If you know how to use RDP, Vista Home/Premium wasn't meant for you anyway.
- aseidl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Also, the remote control software in Mac OS X is VNC compatible, there's an advanced screen where you can enter a VNC password. But, it seems kind of slow (at least for me). I now use OSXvnc and LogMeIn.com.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The only reason you are complaining is thinkingserious found this before you so you can't post it.
- aiyla, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Why not use x11vnc for Linux ?
http://techflock.blogspot.com/2006/10/x11vnc-vnc-server-to-your-real-x.html - pedalwrench, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX
How to install freenx in ubuntu, I imagine it would work in most deb based distros.
It is amazing how fast it is! - Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3> Compositing works perfectly over it.
That's amazing. That's the single feature I've need to make my business profitable for years now. With that feature, I should be a millionaire within months. I'm running to the store right now to buy a copy of Vista to replace each Ubuntu box on my network. - bakkouz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Just a side note, Remote desktop exists and is built in within Windows XP also.
- vinbob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Buried as inaccurate, you don't need to screen scrape with VNC or RDP, there is such a thing as a command line interface or X forwarding on any unix/linux/bsd OS.
- digitalarcanum, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Vista's Remote desktop is absolute *****. Have you tried to remote into an XP system? Slow as can possibly be. It's not just Remote desktop either, I tried running a VNC session from a vista laptop to an xp workstation and it's still slow as *****. It's been a little while since I've uninstalled vista, but last time I tried Remote desktop was slow as hell. That's something that needs to be fixed.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Because Ubuntu has to be plastered all over Digg's home page. Damn, people are using it or not. Enough try to shove Ubuntu down people's throats. It's getting as bad as MSFT now.
- terrorpin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0The point is that humankind doesn't need to discover ssh -X. They get a nice GUI app that just works.
