- PhirePhly, on 10/11/2007, -4/+58How to really install LAMP for newbies:
1) Select the "Install LAMP server" option
2) ???
3) Profit! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+35Step 1: Go to the front page of Digg.com to read article about installing LAMP on Ubuntu (this should work on any day)
Step 2: Read article
Step 3: Install LAMP on Ubuntu
Step 4: Come to terms with the fact that you will never do anything with LAMP - steffinb, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24Ya know, if you have "very little knowledge of using Linux" as this guide suggests, then WTF are you doing installing LAMP?
Just wonderin' - bakeyman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Step 1: Download the Ubuntu Server ISO
Step 2: Burn ISO to a CD
Step 3: Boot from CD
Step 4: Select "Install a LAMP Server"
Step 5: See step 4. - bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12*Sigh* https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP
- vonskippy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Great - now Falko's lame ass uber-annoying Blog Spam is making it on Digg.
How ***** sad is that? - stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10stalefries finds it odd that kawahee writes in the third person.
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yeah it is sort of the "if everyone did it" principal. If everyone commented and said things as unsubstantial as thomas when they dugg someone elses comment, digg comments would be unreadable and useless.
- climbjm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Or use XAMPP http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
Does anyone else think that the chick roller blading on XAMPP's website looks like a cross between Ozzy and a woman? - myfanwy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6linux on ubuntu? awesome, can't wait!!!
- fisticuffs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Where's the rest of the tutorial? You know, the part where you actually put some effort into hardening this target you've just created? lol!!!
- tpink, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't recommend changing bind-address to your IP address unless you understand what you're doing. Setting it to 127.0.0.1 means that it only accepts MySQL connections from that physical box. If it's a home dev box running the whole LAMP suite, you probably don't need to connect its MySQL instance from other machines. Changing it to the machine's IP address allows anyone on your LAN to connect to it, and if the box isn't firewalled, anyone on the internet.
- TheRemoteViewer, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Why would a Linux newbie want to install LAMP?
- apachedisco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Step 1. Install Apache.
Gawddammit. - rabidjade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Wow, I love Linux elitist making negative "noobs" comments. Then people wonder why Linux will never succeed as a mainstream Windows replacement. I've been playing with LAMP myself for a week or so to replace my current web server configuration. I've ran into a lot of the "ubber stoopid noob" comments in a few places when asking for help. Makes me wonder why I even considered switching.
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think we all know this.
But honestly, how many of us actually code PHP driven websites that earn a good profit? - binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No, that's just the digg mentality. People who are too insecure with their own level of knowledge - but are darn sure that other people are worthy of the noob label.
I wouldn't consider them linux elitist... more like the jesters in the court of open source. They really aren't worth much, other than comical relief when you feed them to the lions. - psylence, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes, it does.
- clperez390, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3People tend to digg down reactionary comments as they offer little to the discussion. If you like the comment there is a digg up button, use it. No need to tell the world you did it.
- rabidjade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Maybe to learn about LAMP?
- InferiorWang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3WHY ARE WE YELLING!?!
- spltimg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Wow this makes it sound really hard... I always use synaptic... seems easy to me :D
- Seph7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yes I do think she does and why are people digging you down for suggesting xammp, its a very useful all in one tool
- PhirePhly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Because some people actually try and get work done on computers... It's too bad a lot of us Linux users don't get that...
- ZephyrWest, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Open a terminal and do "sudo tasksel"...
- DudleyInnocent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2... You did not just refer to the digg search function as a reliable source for anything...
No.. that did not just happen. - 35263526, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was working with PHP on a Windows development machine long before I went any further with Linux use than interacting with a remote server via FTP.
- Awspire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Because XAMPP is for testing and designing, and not meant for production purposes. I did come across any easy to install WAMP package for Windows users, and they even tout their package for production usage. Looks nice, see for yourself: http://www.devside.net/
- LowRentDiggs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Developing sites on a local server. Time spent learning something takes time away from learning something else. In life you must make compromises, we can't know everything.
- BassJunkie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree with steff's original comment about why would a Linux newbie want to install LAMP? What would have been helpful is if they actually suggested somethings you could do with it? Host your own website, some learning or a web based torrent client such as Torrentflux?
I've recently setup LAMP on a basic laptop to run Torrentflux B4rt and would really like to know some other uses for my new LAMP setup! - izzybomb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Installing LAMP seems to be one of the first thing a new linux user will do. I know once I got ubuntu running solid, a friend talked to me about some PHP he was working on and boom, I was suddenly looking around for how to get my own LAMP up and going.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I cannot see them restarting the MySQL server after editing the /etc/my.cnf file, so the change of bind address won't work until the next reboot.
- raseel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Too basic. It's just like pointing to packages.
- weeeezzll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Roller blading? She has platform style knee high boots on. There are no wheels...
But yes she does look like Ozzie.. - doctapeppa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Even though you lol'd at your own comment. I still dugg it because I was thinking the same thing.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, using a bind address of 127.0.0.1 seem redundant to me, as the client can still use the Unix domain socket to communicate with the server. On my MySQL server (for the MediaWiki at work), I just added 'skip-networking' to the /etc/my.cnf file, so that it won't open any TCP socket, locally or remotely accessiible.
- binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Too right! Tpink, I was just going to reply after I RTFA.
Anyone who does optional step 2 and changes their BIND Address from 127.0.0.1 to their network IP address must do two things!
1. Lock down the root and other mysql user accounts with a STRONG password.
2. Change this setting every single time their machine changes IP addresses. When your IP changes, MySQL will not start until this IP is set correctly.
I would recommend leaving bind address set to localhost and just install phpmyadmin (and lock that down with a STRONG password). Or just SSH into the damn box if you need command line access. - m3mn0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There is such a thing as WAMP (Windows-Apache-MySQL-PHP).
Many PHP newbies and ASP converts try that setup first, and then move to LAMP. - binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No doubt about... that's an Ozzie look-a-like.
- X111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Lovely, another lamp tutorial. I'd like to see one on how to get a proper mail server with spam and anti-virus in as few clicks as the whole lamp thing.
*grumbles and goes back to reading postfix and spamassassin docs* - championchap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Go cry to Kevin if it's bothering you so much.. Maybe he'll write a new blog post just for you saying "Hey guys, .Steven is upset, from now on you've all got to be super nice to him ok?" and it'll make it to the frontpage, so we'll all no doubt see it.
Or you could quit your bitching. - championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hell, as long as his music stays away I don't care how lame his blog posts are.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Kawahee managed to do it without submitting a story to digg:
sudo apt-get install apache2 php5-mysql libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server
That was hard. - climbjm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I had to double check, you're right! LOL
- tempusrob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Because being a 'NIX newbie and be a web developer are mutually exclusive traits?
- pak314, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This article could have been replaced by a small script.
- tkoopa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1here's my 1 line command to install lamp on ubuntu (thanks to apt's managing of dependencies : pma needs mysql and php, php needs apache) :
sudo aptitude install phpmyadmin - .Steven, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3And again...
Again...
Why are people digging you down? If someone wants to digg a comment down, leave a message why. Is it that you have nothing better to do than over moderate a website, so that I have to every thing to show all? Go outside, or do something else, than sit on your computer playing Counter-Strike/Warcraft/etc.
WTF is wrong with diggers? - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Some people mod all my comments down systematically. I think they get the RSS feed and cycle through it a few times a day. It's annoying.
- chrisdpratt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I'll never understand why people feel they have to make their own contribution to topics that have already been covered in exhausting detail. LAMP tutorials are done to death.
