- rock4, on 10/23/2007, -0/+22why do you want to follow all the hard process here is simple vmware server installation from .deb packages with nice step by step guide
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-vmware-server-from-canonical-commercial-repository-in-ubuntu-feisty.html - jma06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11People who run Linux and install VMWare on it aren't the kind of people that need to be encouraged or discouraged from installing Windows. They should be perfectly capable of making educated choices of OSes.
- Terminaltor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Don't care if I'm banned.
Digg just deleted the 16,000 +dugg thread to bend over to HD-DVD

- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6VMware Server is free too....
http://www.vmware.com/products/server/
and you can use the exact same VM on their Workstation, Player, Lab Manager, and ESX products. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -2/+7Same directions for Ubuntu, but replace 'msi' with 'deb'. Also, you don't have to click 'Next' eight thousand times or delete all the extra shortcuts on your desktop, quick launch bar, etc.
- feedmecereal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can also set up Virtualbox which is entirely free: http://virtualbox.org
- jma06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think what @feedmecereal is referring to is that VirtualBox is open source (GPL) and free and VMWare is not. Some people have issues with closed source software inserting kernel level hooks into their OS.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4A virtual machine isn't exactly the same as a word processor or media player. Besides, read the first comment -- all you have to do is download the installer and run it.
- NJHewitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Virtualization features are built in to the Linux kernel, if that's what you mean.
You still need utilities like this to use it. - Shootfast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also free is the VMware workstation 6 beta.
Note: If you're running beryl/compiz you can't spin the cube with a VM in fullscreen on VMware server, only in workstation or player. - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unfortunately, if you're running VMware everywhere else, you'll probably want to run VMware on Linux too. VMware has always made the Windows and Linux versions of everything compatible with each other.
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was mildly entertained until you said ninjas > pirates. HERETIC!
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Or Fedora...?
http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_server_fedora_core_6 - mrwonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is probably because Player/Workstation have graphical optimisations to make things work nice for a desktop user. Server is mostly orientated to headless installations and so includes no such niceties. Since you can't have Player and Server installed at the same time (The only free path) your decision boils down to this.
1) Need to create/edit VMs = VMware Server OR Virtualbox
2a) Don't need graphical capabilities = VMware Server OR Virtualbox
2b) Need graphical capabilities = VMware Player OR Virtualbox
If you need 1. and 2b. You'll need to use Virtualbox. Any other combination, take your pick. - ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't do that, but you could have the user's startup script fire up VMServer or VMPlayer with a nifty virtual Windows machines. It would take a minute while the computer boots AGAIN, but you do get Windows. I use a Windows 2000 VM for those few things that only work on Windows that I can't live without.
Dual booting might be a better option for a n00b user. - xspinkickx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait people do realize that vmware server is on the feisty commercial repo, right, you can sudo apt-get install vmware-server....
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thanks rock4, that worked.
I'm going to try VirtualBox too, I'll probably use this:
Howto: VirtualBox without opening the shell, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=340113 -- It just tells you to DL and install a DEB package, quite hard :P - reha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you are interested in virtualbox here is nice guide to install http://www.ubuntugeek.com/create-and-manage-virtual-machines-using-virtualbox.html
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No, you can't nest multiple VMware images.
- wonderworm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So guys. What is the best linux distro for windows users who like to click icons and pictures to manage things and like to be able to install applications similar to windows where you just doubleclick an executable? Also, which distro's have boatloads of drivers so you don't have to go find some special linux drivers for your hardware and you don't have to use the command line to tweak your video card or monitor just to get your monitor to work.
So for all the dumb lazy windows people, which are the top linux distros to pick from? or are they all still not there yet.
Also, tell us the reason again why Ubuntu became so popular so fast? How is it different/better than other distro's other than it's African name? - istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I kinda want to try this as I'm having trouble getting a few apps that don't work out too well in WINE (Dreamweaver 8)
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The link's method isn't that hard....and your repository method is almost as many steps and will take just as long, you just get a nicer looking install process. 6 one way, half dozen the other.
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can probably run the Windows VM in the background and just rdesktop into it.
- rootcomputing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I neglected to mention...I am using Linux
- rootcomputing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw someone mentioned how they had issues with VMware, I myself did as well. When I did the initial install for some reason not everything was configured correctly and it ended up placing those files in a few places on my system. I tried to configure them, but it ended up being more of a headache then I wanted. At that point I said the hell with it and went to remove it and ran into more issues. I just gave up on that whole deal and went with Virtual box. That is so easy to use and had it set up in a few minutes. It seems like some bugs are still being worked out, but I am willing to work with that. The few commands I had to enter in every time (chmod some of the files, and bridging), I just made a little shell script so that took care of that issue. I am very pleased with virtual box and I recommend it to everyone interested in virtualization.
- bluelu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@patik:
Sure :), as written in http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_feisty_fawn_vmware_server_howto ;). Have you even read the article? - eridius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I currently have Ubuntu 7.04 installed in VMware Fusion beta on my iMac. I wonder if it would be possible to install VMware Server on my virtualized Ubuntu.... *cackle*
- NachoDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wonderworm:
You want Ubuntu. It's not exactly the same process, but it's not complicated. It can be learned reasonably quickly. Ubuntu is also very well documented - type your problem into google with the word "ubuntu" added (i.e. "ATI drivers ubuntu") and you should get good results.
Ubuntu got big because It Just Works (tm). I've worked with Slackware, Red Hat/Fedora, Debian, SuSE, Mandrake/Mandriva, MEPIS, and more. Ubuntu is the one that's required the least amount of screwing around looking for drivers, trying to get ethernet up and running, configuring X (the windowing system), and all the other headaches that kept me off Linux. If I weren't such a gamer nerd, I'd abandon Windows entirely. As it stands, I dual-boot, and do most heavyweight non-gaming tasks in Linux.
Download the Feisty Fawn (7.0something) ISO, burn it to a CD, pop it in and reboot. It's called a LiveCD, which means it runs the entire OS from the CD and without installing to the hard drive. You can try it for free (no charge, no changes made to your system unless you ask it to) and if you don't like it, just shut down and take the disc out. No commitment. Obviously, you won't be able to add or remove programs, but I think you can run Synaptic (the "Add/Remove Programs" of Ubuntu) from the disc and see how it works. - pyite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Make sure to try OpenVZ (http://openvz.org). I like it better than VM Ware, and it is much faster if you are running all Linux VM's.
- rolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have found Innotek's Virtualbox easier to install and configure overall on Ubuntu (Automatix2 and Synaptic both install it IIRC). Just a matter of minutes for the program itself and then the normal installation time of the OS (actually less, it seems to only install the OS from the disc without the OEM bloat/junk). The performance is also supposed to be better (hearsay) and it is a matter of clicking a few buttons on a GUI. The only real problem I have had so far was that Microsoft WGA refuses to recognize this installation as genuine even though it is my own disc from the OEM that the computer is from. Perhaps it's some type of Bios issue where it expects a certain chip instead of whatever Virtualbox virtualizes - not sure.
I have tried VMware but have failed to get it up and running unfortunately. There are a lot of text files I had to configure the last time I tried it (last month) without good results. - Farticus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Cool, now how do I get Window$ to fire up full screen in a VM when a given (noob) user logs in?
- Icecream, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Not on ubuntu
- doushanes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Isn't virtualization built in?
- 2shae, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2And they say that Ubuntu is easy...
Yet you need a whole howto to install something - bluelu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How to install VMware Server in Windows:
1) Download *.msi
2) Double click on file and install. - EerFoolWVU, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Lets not encourage people to run Windows!
However, if you just wanna run other distros of Linux, power to you. - Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Pics or it didn't happen, But... Will it blend? Ninjas > Pirates
