- TheAttacks, on 10/16/2007, -2/+22maybe this explains to install the one not in the repositories? oh, hey, you missed the first sentence.
- hardwarehank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I use fluxbox on straight debian with no problems...
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Gnome and KDE are not window managers, but desktop environments. Gnome's default window manager is metacity, for example. KDE's is KWin.

If you bothered to read the guys post, which you didn't, you would see that he explains why simply installing the package via apt is not a good idea. - AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@lpcutstom.
it says in the post that the fluxbox in the repositories is slow, thats why he built it instead of apt-getting it. Smartass.
If you read the thread you would know that... - 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Don't feel so down. When people hear the word "tutorial" (or a similar one) they become a bit more bold in their efforts. Sure, just about anyone can install Fluxbox with the help of Google, but most people don't. Seeing the code, descriptions, and notes (and sometimes screenshots) makes people a bit more sure of themselves. Folks like us break from the gate at a dead run, but others need a little prodding. There's nothing wrong with that, and it shouldn't make you worry about mainstream linux. (too much :-)
- bennypowers, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6One benefit to compiling the latest version is that you have access to the fluxbox menu configurator
- smalldeus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I thought Ubuntu means "I'm tired of pirating Windows and other software and don't know much about Linux, but I'll try this one because they say it's relatively easier to use than other distros."
- bcnewman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That's the entire point behind Ubuntu. Thats why the first thing you see on the Ubuntu home page is "Linux for Human Beings" with a picture of normal human beings doing normal human being stuff stuff (I guess thats what they are doing). If this was an article on how to install Flux in Slackware then your point would be valid.
- fortezza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Simple, really. If you want a very lightweight, no-frills ( though it does have some neat features ) Window Manager, you install something like Fluxbox. I''ve been running it for over a year now, and I refuse to go back to Gnome/KDE, though I do use their apps. The speed and customizablility of the menus brought me in, the transparent, tabbed Windows locked me into the Fluxbox world. Its a prison I do not want to escape :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9For those who don't know, Fluxbox is a Window Manager (ala KDE/Gnome but much more lightweight)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluxbox - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually Debian not only makes it easy to have a sensible menu, it makes it easy to deploy a system with a standard menu across every WM (so you get the flexibility of letting users choose whatever interface works for them, with the managability admins require) by having a menu system that is a requirement of every packaged WM to use (and a suggestion for every package in the system).
And the magic of Debian is that from an end-users' perspective, you don't even know its there. The admin installs a package, everyone's menus are automatically updated accordingly.
For power users, the menus can be trivially customised using the same standard system so you get custom menus while keeping in sync with the rest of the system. - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some people would like to have a Debian-based distribution, with the added commercial support Canonical can provide, and without all the lame-o politics (eg, "we can't include the documentation for the C library because we would prefer to make a pointless bruhaha over license semantics instead of delivering useful stuff to our end users")
Why should such people not be able to use whatever interface suits them best? Just because GNOME is default doesn't mean people should be forced to use it solely, or fork off yet another distribution to change it to KDE or whatever else. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4if you guys wanna try Fluxbox out with ubuntu first you could try out nUbuntu, that uses it for the main desktop manager. http://nubuntu.org
- bennypowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You would not run GNOME because it's slow, until GSlice comes standard on Ubuntu at the next release, that is.
And you would run not-GNOME on ubuntu because it's a nice distro with a pleasant community and lots of support. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just click this link:
http://digg.com/users/HackJandy/friends/dugq
Kevin is my only friend, so the stuff you see in the queue is the stuff he has ready for submission after digging. You'll see the most asinine things in there before they hit the front page. Sometimes they get burried before they hit the front page but I've only seen it about three times. - super_duper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I installed fluxbox on my Ubuntu system a couple weeks ago to get some speed improvements over Gnome. Defintely less bloat, but didn't seem that much faster.
Perhaps it's the 600 MHz Celeron 96 MB Ram computer I'm running it on. Hehe - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks, I had never drawn the distinction before, but that makes sense.
- danpsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And I suppose you linux elitists would just have us continue pirating Windows. Linux heads make zero sense to me. It's as if you have to suffer through an intolerable configuration period for a distro to be hardcore enough for you to use. Grow up children, some people don't wanna spend 8 days getting everything to work cuz they are ub3r 1337.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How about the latest, which includes numerous bug fixes and perhaps even new features? For that, this guide is great. For outdated stuff or whenever they get to packaging them, then apt-get is great.
- cubikdice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, I prefer Openbox, but generally I tend to like all the *boxes. :-)
- icurnvs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think there must be some code in the background of Digg.com that says if Kevin Rose diggs it, it's goin to the front page of digg.com. After 16 hours it has 20ish diggs and then Kevin diggs it...and BAM...instant front page :p I'm watchin a story that's 45 minutes old and it has 35 diggs...Strangely enough, no front page. Weird :)
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"don't you people gave forum for your disto?"
Erm, the link IS to the Ubuntu forum..
Anyway, half-decent post, dunno about Fluxbox being "pretty", but thats not a big deal..
- Ben - bcrowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm using fluxbox on ubuntu right now. Ubuntu, for me, isn't linux for the masses, it's just a bleeding-edge version of Debian.
- 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4True. The users interested in Fluxbox are almost certainly uninterested in Ubuntu...
Each appeals to an entirely different user base. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Ubuntu and fluxbox.
- TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is true, but it was posted at the Ubuntu Forums, so i labeled it that way. you do have a point, although.
- livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2oh frickin hell
Not a user OF Ubuntu but dugg
Because I love Fluxbox! - colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3agreed. fluxbox is for minimalists and people with old hardware, Ubuntu isn't really tailored towards that market
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1su asks for the root password. Not really useful when you don't HAVE a root password.
use 'sudo -s', it'll ask for _your_ password and then give you a root shell (if you are in the admin group). - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1then say that first instead of dumbass comments
/like mine ;) - benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah, poo
The latest version isn't 0.9.14 - it's 0.9.15. I'm running it on Dapper Drake with no trouble (compiled from svn) - kevinlyfellow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Assuming you don't want a DE...
- kevinlyfellow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You said it danpsmith. I have run a number of distros, but I choose the best one for the job. Ubuntu is best for my laptop. But, I have run and successfully configured Arch 0.8, Red Hat (back in the 02), and debian netinstall without an x environment. I don't see why people desire to have driver issues. Ubuntu is just like any other linux distro, but it is more likely to work out of the box and has a brown theme. If I want to compile everything I install, I can do that with Ubuntu. If I want to load my modules by hand, I can get rid of the HAL daemon and load all my modules by hand. To me, the only distro that proves that you really understand Linux better is LFS.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ubuntu is Linux for the masses, not folks who want fluxbox. I used Ubuntu for awhile, but I'd rather have rolling updates than semi-yearly updates.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1read the article
- kaens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah that's a pretty sweet distro. It's really not that useful if you don't want to do network analysis...but it's a good example of fluxbox running on Ubuntu solidly.
- tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I could never design a good theme to match my background.
- eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6If you want to install fluxbox, don't use a Debian based distro. From experience, I can tell you that Debian and Ubuntu make it a pain to have a sensible menu, and don't package a lot of the good fluxbox programs (like pagers and such).
- livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not a user or Ubuntu but dugg
because i love fluxbox! - tyme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2$ ./configure
$ make
$ su
# make install - RexStJames, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6No, it's Debian. Ubuntu uses a lot of stuff from Debian. That's why the joke is "Ubuntu means "I can't configure Debian""
- smalldeus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We "The average Ubuntu users" used to have pirated Windows installed. Does it bother you that now we are trying to use something OSS and be a part of this movement? And to learn how to use it because it IS harder to use than Windows?
- rino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Another front page blather about Ubuntu?? Geezum crow, someone's got the hots for Linux distros and pretty ho-hum news items.
Next up: how to download and install Firefox!
All I'm saying is why not save the front page for something that's truly tricky, erudite, or extremely informative? Not ./configure ./make test ./make install - almighty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Last I checked, this was some serious old news.
- marty0577, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBBBBS
- lpcustom, on 10/16/2007, -31/+29sudo apt-get install fluxbox
much easier
now for my next trick I'll install xfce4
sudo apt-get install xfce4
how about enlightenment
sudo apt-get install enlightenment - xafan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Really, why would you run anything under Ubuntu other then Gnome? I mean there is Kubuntu for KDE users but these distros are specifically tailored to their window manager. If you like apt-get so much why don't you just install regular Debian? Otherwise go to a distro like Slackware, Arch, Gentoo or whatever (listed in no specific order, I use Arch.).
- mcgirt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2run xfce if you want a lightweight window manager. fluxbox is outdated IMHO
