- MattFromSeattle, on 07/15/2008, -1/+74Far from creating your own distro.
- Kbiscu1t, on 07/15/2008, -0/+39This is merely customizing what is pre-installed on an install disc, not "creating a distro", instresting nonetheless.
- Rolamoto, on 07/15/2008, -0/+23Why not PornOS?
- Acglaphotis, on 07/15/2008, -0/+17I made an app to customize ubuntu cd's so here it is: http://code.google.com/p/ulc-livecd-editor/
/shameless plug - Stupidumb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+15So, it's like a regular operating system except every time you try to click on something, or run a program, porn happens instead?
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/15/2008, -0/+14porn happens
- DannyTMurphy, on 07/15/2008, -1/+14Hahaha, I should have saw that coming.
- energyblue, on 07/15/2008, -2/+14And a new storm of distros begin....

- YodaNub, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11Wow, I never knew creating your own distro was just installing a few programs and messing with alsamixer! Can you believe I thought I had to call mine "Arch" for the longest time?
- Aurabolt, on 07/15/2008, -2/+13I can already create my own distro...
http://www.gentoo.org/ - Stupidumb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+9I guess the creator actually has to manually, and slowly, burn the distro when you click the burn icon. Then he somehow manages to sneak into your house and place the disk into your drive without you knowing.
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9here you go fella! http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/
:) - deathfix, on 07/15/2008, -1/+10I'd be slightly more impressed if the software wasn't so outdated.
This is based on Slackware, so I'm not sure how easy it'll be to upgrade packages. - ileftfark, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8I thought Gentoo existed for a while now... although this way might be quicker ;)
- DamnMan, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8wget http://websites.com/pub/softwarepackage.bz2 && tar -jxvf softwarepackage.bz2 && cd softwarepackage && ./configure && make && su -c "make install"
In other words, pretty easy. besides that, Slackware isn't "outdated". It simply doesn't have a super sophisticated automagic package manager(by default - you can certainly install one). In terms of absolute bleeding edge. Its actually easier on Slackware building from source than it is Deb, portage, or RPM simply because you don't have to wait for someone to make a package for it, or some committee to approve it for a repository. Nothing wrong with any of that, they are great. But calling this "outdated" because its slack based? - Stupidumb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7How is this easier than installing applications?
- mossblaser, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6Frankley the openSUSE installer offers more flexibility. What a load of crap.
- deltaandroid, on 07/15/2008, -2/+8Well really aren't most distro's just that? Sure you have your "base" kernel (Debian based, Red Hat based) but then the differences between the further denominations are just packages and repositories. Take the beloved Ubuntu for example, all that separates it and the current Debian stable are repositories, packages, and the default user not being in the sudoers folder by default. I get what you mean however, its just not "from scratch"
- Stupidumb, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6I like the Digg-type Linux idea but I think it should affect how the user interacts with the OS. For example, say you want to run Firefox. It first checks the online database of user opinions of what you should run. Then it comes back to you and runs the most popular program as voted by your peers. You wanted to surf the web, but now you're forced to play solitaire.
You wanted to listen to music but now you are forced to edit a text document that says "You are a fag". - cutchyacokov, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6This already exists. It is exactly what you get if you connect an unpatched version of WinXP or 2000 (either without service packs) directly to the internet without a router and wait 60 seconds or so.
- ngmcs8203, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Three words: WTF?
- trogdoor, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5I would say that a distribution must differ significantly enough that it requires it's own repositories, so Ubuntu would be separate from Debian ( though Ubuntu's repos are based on Debian unstable they have additional patches for most packages, you can't just use Debian's repositories in Ubuntu ) but {k,x,}ubuntu would not be a different distribution.
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5It has to have random popups with facepalm and it's a trap! ASCII.
- theaceoffire, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Thanks, I will defiantly keep a hold of this...
Hey, do you have/know of any boot floppies that can let you boot from USB?
Or maybe a modified root.img, boot.img, network-drivers.img debian floppies that let you install ubuntu without a CD drive using repositories?
Best I could find was this:
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ - xBiTReaVeRx, on 07/15/2008, -2/+6exactly what we need.
- boobsbr, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4http://www.fanboys-online.com/index.php?comic=283
this guy made a shameless plug better than you. - Frostek, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4And yet it still all fits on one CD...
- Caerbannog, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Because the world needs more.
- patm1987, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4That is not a how-to guide for creating your own linux distro from scratch. This is a how-to guide for creating your own linux distro from scratch:

- fmorel90, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromUSB
I know that Ubuntu != Linux, but you can probably do something similar with other distros. Personally, I use "Booting the kernel from a bootable CD" cause my dad freaks out whenever I ask to touch the hard drive in any way with anything Linux-related - brainjuice, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Thanks, I'll definitely try this. Ubuntu is getting mighty bloated these days.
- redwallhp, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I wonder how long 'til we get lolcat linux...
- bootup, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I hate to say that this is hardly creating a distribution. I mean- selecting a few options is NOT creating a distribution. You might have a few pretty pictures. You haven't the option to actually tweak things the way you want them. I think a tutorial does actually exist on how to setup a distribution based off the free version of Ubuntu /w a separate repository. Other tutorials for customizing 'from scratch' exist that are probably good enough to call ones own.
- bratterscain, on 07/15/2008, -2/+4Maybe someone should do a Digg-type Linux where users submit comments on what should go in the distro or what gets improved. idk, just throwing ideas but most distro authors don't seem to listen to what the general public likes but what they want for themselves.
- rmccs0x, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2misleading but interesting. LFS is the most educational tool for linux newbs.
- dogsop, on 07/16/2008, -2/+4Does anyone else think that installing Linux from an ISO created by an anonymous group in Romania sounds like a bad idea?
- eldridgea, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Or, if you are slightly more experienced, reconstructor.aperantis.com
- eldridgea, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1definitely
- newwatch51, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Although it looks like a nice too, it seem to limited to me.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Try this: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Boot_ ...
- mihai11, on 07/16/2008, -2/+3Why should it be a bad idea ? Because "all Romanian people steal" like "all black people are inferior" ?
You should make a trip to Romania before judging the country based on what you see in the media. - boobsbr, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1brilliant!
- andrewtheart, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1yep, I'm definitely going to trust instructions of any sort for creating my own linux distro from a site called "hehe2".
- Protoss, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1If it were based around Digg, it would have to say "your a faggg!".
- MattBD, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Remastersys is a great tool for creating your own customised distro based on Ubuntu. Just get an Ubuntu install set up how you want it, install remastersys and enter "sudo remastersys dist" and it'll do everything for you. I love it!
- evanfrey, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1So the defining factor in a distribution is where it gets its packages? What if I compile everything from source? What if you compile everything from source? Is CentOS, Scientific Linux and Redhat all the same? They all come from the same sources, but they have different repositories, does that make them different?
A distribution is a set of applications packaged with a kernel -
