- tama00, on 01/07/2009, -1/+46They should rename this article to 'installing ubuntu on a netbook' cause thats all it really is.
- bennyshoham, on 01/06/2009, -1/+39Buy netbook, Get Linux, Make power, Be User. Linux FTW!
- diggapleasee, on 01/07/2009, -5/+37***** POWER USERS!!
- FlyingCaveman, on 01/06/2009, -8/+38Do, people still say "power user"? Its such a Windows thing. Loosely translated it means, the so called computer expert at your work who doesn't know ***** about computers, but knows a few tricks and is good at making people think he knows what he's doing. Power users have the hardest time adopting to the Linux way.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+31Being in IT, Power Users scare me.....
Power Users are users who know just enough to be dangerous....they can, for the most part, whip up some pretty neat things. BUT, on occasion will do something to completely bork their system and not have a clue what they did. Then after you spend quite some time searching out and saving their documents which are never all in the same place because they never put things in their network folder and then reimaging the machine, THEY DO IT AGAIN!!! - jaymulder, on 01/07/2009, -1/+19Not at all. Geeks run circles around anyone that calls themselves a 'power user'.
- Scira, on 01/07/2009, -0/+15Another use for power user I've heard is describing a group of users with higher rights.
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/07/2009, -0/+15I was under the impression that a Power User was basically a term to describe the target market of user knowledgeable about computers, scripting, etc but was not a professional. Sort of what an Amateur athlete is compared to a Pro. They can be just as skilled if not more than your average IT monkey and even up to Developer, Engineer, or Administrator standards, but they don't work with computers as their primary professional responsibility.
- kentifer, on 01/07/2009, -0/+14With a little bit of aircrack-ng, i get wifi in many places on my aspire one.
- antispin, on 01/07/2009, -1/+14I have Xubuntu installed on an Acer Aspire One. My #1 suggestion: Learn to use command-line apps.
Maybe that sounds crazy, but I find using command line applications on the netbook *much* easier than using GUI equivalents. The keyboard is not bad on mine; the trackpad is just awful though, and carrying a mouse around sort of defeats the point of the netbook for me. And the command line is FAST -- no waiting!!
Good command-line apps I use are: vim (text editor), calcurse (calendar), hnb (to-do list), abook (address book). For web browsing I have to use X of course, but I use the Midori web browser which is much faster than Firefox. - m1zl3d, on 01/07/2009, -5/+16Being a Power User, People in IT scare me....
IT just think they know EVERYTHING about the system. They can, for the most part, fix things when they go wrong. BUT, on occasion they will come in and completely BORK your system and then blame it on you! After they "fix" your computer you realize all of your documents are gone! One day I came into work and IT had completely re-imaged my machine! I had completely lost Bonzi buddy! Who else is going to talk to me on third shift? I eventually get everything back in it's place. Then a few weeks later...THEY DO IT AGAIN!!! - fiddler616, on 01/07/2009, -2/+13The difference between a power user and a true geek/hacker:
A power user doesn't know enough to realize his lack of knowledge, and as such is very arrogant about the knowledge he does have.
A geek knows enough to realize he doesn't know some things, and as such he is a lot more humble and conservative about his computer skills, but uses them a lot better. - fatsobob, on 01/07/2009, -1/+11The only freaking suggestions this gave was Install Ubuntu. 4 pages of Install Ubuntu
- absurdist, on 01/07/2009, -1/+11Or you could just install Ubuntueee, Eeexubuntu, Cruncheee, or Puppeee and not have to dick around with it.
- fredinator, on 01/07/2009, -0/+10shh but...
i don't think m1zl3d is serious
don't tell anyone! - pitchblack16, on 01/06/2009, -3/+12"Ah need morrre powwwa capppin", ok so my scottish Scotty accent sucks but I'm banking on everyone getting the point.
- phyx726, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9What the hell is a power user...they make it sound like Ubuntu is the hard one to use
- distrachi, on 01/07/2009, -1/+10netbooks offer a much smaller and lighter form factor than equivalent priced laptop. This is very important to some people who want to carry a computer with them all day.
just because you have no use for a smaller form factor, does not mean others don't either. - tackle, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9You cannot really "power use" a netbook.
- farfromhere, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8Hence the name, "netbook."
- Mundo, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8May I suggest using Easy Peasy Linux? http://www.geteasypeasy.com/ (formally Ubuntu-EEE).
- CoreyTamas, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7I think you may have just been skimming articles about netbooks and made some assumptions both about what they come equipped with and how they're used. Your comment rings as though you don't really have a good sense of why they're so valuable.
- VirtualCtor, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7I agree with you on Debian and Slackware, but friends do not let friends install Gentoo.
Gentoo is for ricers.
http://funroll-loops.info - bytor4232, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8I've been using Linux since it started, exclusively since 1998. I must be a newb cause I run Ubuntu right?
Some of us have jobs and families and don't want to dick with their machines for hours on end. Ubuntu is as much Linux as anything else.
Besides, I do some pretty advanced ***** with my 'buntu. - MadOgre, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8So to be a Power User, all I have to do is install Ubuntu Linux.
What if I want to be a SUSE Power User?
/Running Ubuntu on my Dell laptop. Just asking. - jaymulder, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9My understanding is that it meant just above average. Like someone who understands a few basic concepts. I guess it depends where you are, but the average user at my work thinks that the entire internet is stored inside 'the blue E'.
- bigtrouble777, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6If you have 2gb of memory (only $25 extra), you really don't need to use the netbook remix packages and you can turn the compiz effects on. They don't slow down the machine noticeably and you gain a lot of usability with the various plugins.
I would also not recommend the netbook remix because it makes programs like gimp impossible to use. If you like games these machines are perfect emulation platforms. I have a nice DOS setup and mednafen working perfectly. - jasmus, on 01/07/2009, -1/+7little hard drive? little ammount of ram? have you looked at netbooks lately?
- pHr34kY, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6Why did he suggest adding the PPA for the netbook remix? It's been in the main repositories for months now!
- skyshock1, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6Harder, better, faster, stronger
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6No it's not.
It's like buying your kids "Spader Man" toys from the dollar store.
They may be cheap, but they are filled with lead and Indonesian spider eggs.
I got an eee 901.
It has two tiny hard drives, has trouble with simple tasks, I can't install a new HDD into it because I got a later revision. I have used Ubuntueee, fedora, Eeexubuntu, OSX 10.5.5 a pile others, as well as windows. The acpi doesn't work on most of them, and the battery only lasts so long because it's 6600mah 6 cell battery.
It's bigger than the batteries in the macbooks. And still I only get 5 hours with wireless use.
Believe it or not, I have found that windows is the best OS for power management.
And I know my way around Linux.
It's not a friggin sweet deal, it's an underpowered appropriately priced machine. - fredinator, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6ubuntu hardly makes you a "power user" anyway...
- fiddler616, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5That last comment seems to have backfired miserably.
- zarque, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5power user my ass!
- jadedoto, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5That's a terrible article. Honestly, telling users who just bought a netbook to make a LiveUSB through the liveCD or making it _manually_?! I am a total linux geek, but it's not something I'd recommend to someone. Why not use something like unetbootin? It's infinitely easier.... Plus you don't have to waste the CD
- MacEnvy, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5If you're disappointed that your netbook isn't a "media machine", you really didn't do your homework before buying it.
- fiddler616, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6I didn't bury you, but just because something is easy to use doesn't mean it's bad.
And considering that Ubuntu is flexible enough to let people create stuff like this:http://kmandla.wordpress.com/ubuntu-gtk12-remix/
from it, I'd call it good enough. - vickers500, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Dugg for use of the word bork.
- PedleZelnip, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Well, I have an Acer Aspire One with Windows XP and have had no problems at all. I do all the same tasks on it that I do on my desktop machine (coding, working on my thesis, designing slides for lectures, etc).
It's surprising what you can do with "limited" horsepower.
The battery life could be better (I get about 2 hours with the 3 cell battery), but it's on par with laptops in the same price range, and I'm more concerned about weight than battery life. - PedleZelnip, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Yes, I'd call them more than adequate. I have an Acer AO and I don't notice any difference than the P4 on the desk in my office.
I'm not saying the P4 isn't more powerful, what I'm saying is that for my work I don't need a dual-core 3+GHZ speed demon. - nonsequitor, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5If you want to call yourself a netbook power user, try something designed for netbooks like LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) http://lxde.org/
Shoe horning your favorite bloated desktop distro onto a netbook with minimal modification does not make you a power user. - fredinator, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5some linux distros have really crap names don't they...
- adt41287, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4sudo that bitch up
- somestranger26, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4"Little harddrive, little amount of ram, small processor"
That's why you can put a 500GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM, and overclock the more-than-adequate Atom processor in many 10" netbooks right? - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4I am a power user and YES, I have borked my own system...BUT, the difference is, I KNOW what I did....and I deal with it and try to avoid DOING IT AGAIN. LOL
Being in IT for almost 20 years, I can tell you that power users are the bane of IT. - cyrix, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3He was saying he's used it since it began, then started using it exclusively since 98.
- svensko, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Tiny Core Linux works great on netbooks as well with the Atheros wireless. Only 10 mb too. ;)
- pitdog, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I have Dell mini 9 with Ubuntu 8.04 and everything runs fine, except it don't want to update. but all the apps run just fine, don't see a need to unburden the comp.
- ralftom, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Nice advice i would like to have one. Thanks for sharing this info.
