- mleaman, on 10/22/2008, -4/+189Oh noes! Dad! I'm caught in a pornado!
- ruforealz, on 10/22/2008, -2/+118Dad- the kid is looking at porn.
-the internet - Rapax, on 10/22/2008, -21/+119My wife had an old laptop running XP. It was showing it's age, running slow, taking forever for anything, so I installed Linux on it and after a few hours, she was happily doing whatever it is she does on that machine.
Few months later, we finally shelled out for a new machine for her, this time running Vista. About a week after this, she asked me if she could get Linux installed on this one too. - clsslc, on 10/22/2008, -12/+94A Windows computer gets infected with malware.
I don't know if this is particularly newsworthy. - Vadi0, on 10/22/2008, -13/+89I personally switched partly because of this too. Having an OS that can take care of it's own security, without requiring third-party tools, is simply wonderful.
Macs? I'll consider one when their price per value / price per feature ratio improves... - emotecontrol, on 10/22/2008, -3/+76My oldest son, creator of his own problems, finally discovered that you can only download so many obvious malware vectors before even Vista throws up its hands and says "what the hell is your problem, kid? You seriously ran an .exe you found on xxxfreewarez.ru? Fine! If you're going to work that hard at making me fail, I'll fail. I would have run problem-free for years, just like XP SP2, but even the most secure OS cannot stand up to your level of godawful stupidity." I installed Linux on his system because I figure he'll need to learn how to type "sudo" before he'll be able to break that, and since he can barely spell his own name, that seems like a pretty safe bet.
FIFY - Kromel, on 10/22/2008, -3/+76Tell your son to stop watching porn....
// Who am I kidding.. I'm watching porn myself right now! - Shadoblak, on 10/22/2008, -6/+67So....Just to be clear...The kid spent his time downloading midget donkey strap on porn from the far reaches of the internet and he's down on Vista because he basically injected it with crap? How dare an OS not work after downloading tons of malware onto it!
- Hoopskidoodle, on 10/22/2008, -12/+57Your son simply doesn't know how to secure a network connected computer.
I've been a cowboy for 25 years (back to BBS days) and I've never stepped in sh*t.
Pop-ups... ROFLMAO I bet that your kid uses IE too. - Aadain, on 10/22/2008, -2/+46Dugg for pornado.
- NikoKun, on 10/22/2008, -8/+48Yay for linux, have it on my laptop, dual boot it on my PC... but I still have to use vista for high end games.
But if people would simply install something like AVG and spybot... they wouldn't have these problems... - socalftw, on 10/22/2008, -1/+35I place more blame on the moronic users that click on anything and then wonder why they have spyware/viruses.
- Brak710101, on 10/22/2008, -7/+41If you are a graphic designer or illustrator, I'd hope you actually understood what USED to make Macs better, and why PCs have just out-paced them on processing on the GPU and CPU side now.
But having one in the family, I know how hard it is to convince her that my gaming rig could nearly run OSX on VMWare just as good.
OS is debatable, provided you don't just clog it up, Windows is just fine for design and stuff.
Macs are just a fashion statement anymore, and even I owned a few. They would be more respectable if they were cheaper, but it's better just to buy the parts off newegg and build your own PC. - belebih, on 10/22/2008, -7/+35I'm sorry, but the problem isn't Vista. Your son is just an idiot.
- Platypus3333, on 10/22/2008, -1/+28I wonder what sites this kid goes to.
- drifter, on 10/22/2008, -5/+32Seriously? What sites does this kid go to? Porn, Warez, random websites?
I have been using Vista since it came out and no issues at all. My brother has had it for a few months and got one virus since he goes to random warez sites. But that is it, he tries to be fairly smart.
This is just dumb stuff for Linux geeks. Guess what guys, if your properly use your computer whether it has Windows, OSX, or Linux it will run properly. - clsslc, on 10/22/2008, -10/+36If you aren't a graphic designer or illustrator, I wouldn't hold your breath.
- kayfouroh, on 10/22/2008, -1/+23But how do you make your millions off of African lotteries and runaway princes??
- skyshock1, on 10/22/2008, -2/+24Just to clarify a misconception - PORN IS NOT WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPUTER INFECTED WITH MALWARE. It just so happens to be the bait many malware writers use.
There, it's been said. - kd420, on 10/22/2008, -3/+24I'm not sure about Vista (I assume it would be the same) but it's not hard to protect yourself from viruses in XP, it's laziness/apathy that leads to most of them. On the flip side, its pretty hard to infect a Linux machine, especially if you only install stuff from repositories etc. I find the bigger reason for switching to Linux, for those who are capable of avoiding viruses just fine, is software bloat. Even a fresh install of Vista has a lot of stuff that most people don't use, and no matter if your careful or not it will still be there.
- colincornaby, on 10/22/2008, -2/+20Honestly, (and I'm a Mac user), it's pretty hard to get a Windows machine infected if you just aren't an idiot. That said, a lot of people are idiots, but all you have to do is keep the antivirus and firewall on, use Firefox, and not do stupid things. Most people catch viruses because they pirate software, and sometimes the software comes laced with a virus (a software crack might come laced with a virus to).
I would guess if his son has been pirating software, and probably got viruses from that. - bubut, on 10/22/2008, -4/+22Hey, Son...Can you stop using the computer like a ***** retard please?
- fatlip, on 10/22/2008, -6/+24Congratulations, you've impressed no one!
- penguinofspades, on 10/22/2008, -0/+17he has stared to long, and now it is the porn that is looking into him...
- rudedogdhc, on 10/22/2008, -6/+23But with Windows it's trivially easy to inadvertently visit a site that puts malware on your PC. Case in point: I run Windows XP inside VMWare on my Macbook. I did a fresh install from a standard XP install disk, then ran Windows Update and turned on automatic updates. I don't use the virtual machine for anything except compiling projects with Visual Studio. Even when working on it, I still surf with Safari. Yet, it somehow got malware on it and had to install Windows Defender to get rid of it. Obviously, I must have somehow gone to a site at some time that had malware. But I don't remember ever doing it.
So if me, a reasonably smart computer user, can still accidentally get malware even with such an atypical use case, it should not be any surprise at all that the average computer user is going to get it. - ayeroxor, on 10/22/2008, -1/+17Wrong. Ironically, you are the troll.
- Tennouheika, on 10/22/2008, -1/+17Firefox + NoScript + (Not opening .exe's from random e-mails) = No problems.
- jamesassbag, on 10/22/2008, -0/+15You can use margarine as deodorant? Sign me up!
- toastgodsupreme, on 10/22/2008, -2/+16So because someone is too stupid to not install garbage, they need an OS that simply won't run the garbage because it's not built for that platform?
What I'm saying isn't a knock against Linux. I have no problem with people who want to use it. But don't use it just because you're too stupid to not download viruses and spyware.
This solves nothing. And honestly I'm tired of operating systems like Windows being dumbed down and made to hold the consumer's hand for them. A little self education and common sense would do the world some good. - Jareth86, on 10/22/2008, -0/+14Are you from the future?
- roxgod666, on 10/22/2008, -0/+13I like avast and avira as the free ones. Kaspersky and Enod32 will pretty much guarantee a virus free computer.
- V1ncent, on 10/22/2008, -3/+16Dear Son: please fap fap fap fap a little less to midget donkey strap-on porn and change your web surfing habits. I'd love to install Linux on your computer but I'm not touching that keyboard until you learn to clean up your fap residue better. Also, your mother says it's time to learn how to make sure your door is closed all the way because we can see you go at yourself. Side note: you do not take after my side of the family...little one
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/22/2008, -1/+14Media Access Control?
- diggdiggerid, on 10/22/2008, -12/+25Without third party tools? It isn't Windows' fault that you go download malware. You don't just sit around on your desktop while malware installs itself, you have to be WILLFULLY VISITING SITES that install it.
- jamesassbag, on 10/22/2008, -3/+16"HELP MY COMPUTER IS ON FIRE!"
Have you tried linux? - Noit, on 10/23/2008, -0/+13But if she'd carried on using the computer the same way, he'd eventually have to reinstall windows again. And again. This way, it just keeps working.
- tama00, on 10/22/2008, -3/+16Windows is pretty cool, when your the spam developer....
- humbled, on 10/22/2008, -0/+13According to the article, he had Clamwin installed. That's not an active defense. You have to right click and manually scan everything. Besides that issue, if his kid was running IE, those two together signal the death-knell. My parents have Windows XP, Firefox, and Clamwin, and that's enough to keep all that crap off their systems - except for one time my step dad used IE accidentally.
Anyway, agreed. AVG or another active scanning tool would have eliminated this issue completely.
* I use Ubuntu and am a big fan of Linux. But, this guy is just ignorant. - stealth658, on 10/22/2008, -1/+13I believe everyone with a NIC has a MAC address.
- bitbytebit, on 10/22/2008, -0/+12Amazing new tech allows you to view more than one window of information at a time. Its cool, try it now!!!1
Ctrl - T - Ismith988, on 10/22/2008, -3/+15Dear Dad: shut up and install linux okay?? I have something I need to do and it can't wait ...
- the0ther, on 10/22/2008, -1/+13Pornado is right! Seriously I don't know how people are still getting all this awful malware on windows xp, when the OS is regularly updated. Clearly it's because idiots are visiting malicious websites.
I say dad should just pony up $25/year for a subscription to a reputable porn site and be done with the malware. - inactive, on 10/22/2008, -7/+18Hey dad,
I am a moron who downloads crap from sites I visit, holy or not, and have no clue about anti-spyware malware and pop up stoppers that exist, some of which are free.
Face it linux fan boys,
Linux is the answer to nothing that common sense can't fix.
XP and Vista are great if you know how to use them. - omjeremy, on 10/22/2008, -0/+114chan
- valleyman86, on 10/22/2008, -15/+26I hate linux as an everyday operating system... I like Linux but mostly as a free server. I think its dumb when people complain about malware. Its their own fault. Ive used the same OS for years and have 0 malware on it. Ive used Vista and XP and keep them very clean. Yea I don't open random ***** and I don't trust everything I see on the internet. Espeacially if I won something!
- CarStan, on 10/22/2008, -2/+13on digg? where?!
- krahzee, on 10/22/2008, -0/+11Avast rocks, but the vocal notification on the updates can scare the ***** out of you.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/22/2008, -2/+12I'm both and I don't use a Mac for my personal work. There's absolutely no reason why you need to.
- petard, on 10/22/2008, -1/+10Oh yeah? What about when the instructions that came with this malware tell them to give it rights? For instance if it was malware designed for Ubuntu, they will say in the instructions to type sudo and put the admin password in, and the average user will do so, without knowing what could happen. There is no way to secure an OS against idiots other than what Apple is doing with the iPhone, and that just severely limits any OS.
- ethana2, on 10/22/2008, -0/+9When making everyone be not-dumb becomes easier than just switching out their operating systems, let me know.
