Does confirm it. - mazza558, on 04/20/2008, -3/+102"Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform.” - Awesome!
- fireBLiND, on 04/20/2008, -5/+96Even Valve outsources
- naughtyboy, on 04/20/2008, -19/+96Why would a valve developer use an ip address from india?

http://www.ipaddressguide.com/ip2location.aspx - directedition, on 04/20/2008, -1/+67Hey! They heard it on IRC! It MUST be true!
- weizbox, on 04/20/2008, -7/+60I've never had problem running any current (all HL/TF2/DoD:Source,etc) game from Valve with WINE. I've never even had to tweak any settings or do anything other than 'wine program.exe' and it just worked.
I still wouldn't mind having them port some over... it's feels nice to be acknowledged by a major game company :) - temugen, on 04/20/2008, -4/+49Yes, because #ubuntu-offtopic is definitely the first place Valve employees would go to look for programmers.
- shad0walker, on 04/20/2008, -3/+38Ok, just tell me which deity to sell my soul too and it will be done.
- Technophobia, on 04/20/2008, -3/+37I don't think this is the Orange box because its too late for the Source Engine. It seems Valve is just porting Steam because if they get in early they will have a monopoly. I would much rather see LGP make some kind of digital distribution system for their games but hay who knows what happening with them these days.
- Cryoniq, on 04/20/2008, -1/+33Sorry.. but last time I checked.. there already was a server for GNU/Linux working prefectly fine..
- Katana314, on 04/20/2008, -2/+33Erm, hate to rain on everyone's parade, but I believe that this is simply to get the Linux Dedicated Server working. In a way, programming the dedicated server is still programming a game. Besides, this has been around for a while.
- drakia, on 04/20/2008, -0/+27You've been a member almost two years, you should know that by now.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -6/+33Watch it end up only being ports of those PopCap games.
- Nobiting, on 04/20/2008, -2/+29A huge reason responsible for me sticking with windows was lack of source games. Valve FTW!
- XVampireX, on 04/20/2008, -2/+24I think that person was not related to valve at all just saw this offer and must have liked it because he's using linux and wants windows games ported on linux...
- Ouze, on 04/20/2008, -2/+23all those fanboys hear is blah blah blah apple, blah blah blah iphone, blah blah blah mac.
- shad0w0fsin, on 04/20/2008, -2/+23"to the Linux platform."- how could that mean apple?
- RichPowers, on 04/20/2008, -5/+26I've never trumpeted "this will be the year of the Linux desktop!", but if Valve starts porting games to Linux it will be huge! I've always believed that PC gamers -- somewhat more tech savvy than your average user -- would be the first to ditch Windows should enough GOOD games end up there. Like so many others, the ONLY reasons Windows exists in my house is for gaming.
- felderado, on 04/20/2008, -0/+19Those PopCap games are already ported by someone I know. Done for an airline who runs Linux on their in-flight entertainment systems.
- radix2, on 04/20/2008, -1/+20Does anyone really hate Steam these days? I know it was a shocker (buggy and intrusive) when it first came out, but things are pretty smooth these days. And it is not just Steam delivered games that require an internet connection to use now days either...
I'm not saying people adore Stream, but compared to the bitterness about it when first released, I would say people have become blase to it. - Culyt, on 04/20/2008, -0/+16The UT3 port has been MIA for 6 months. They claim to be working on it but I get the feeling thats a bunch of crap. I'm guessing they will hold out for as long as possible until most people have forgottent that there was even talk of a Linux port. Apparently its legal issues according to the person doing the port (icculus)
Also there are rumors of EPIC being brought by Microsoft. (There where previously some claiming that it was the physics engine but AgiaX say thats not it).
EPIC have also been deleting threads about the Linux client from their forums.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px ... - AzureRise, on 04/20/2008, -1/+16PoPCap isn't Valve and that's been there for a loooong time.
- Hayaemsay, on 04/20/2008, -1/+15Apple was not mentioned once, so they'd just hear blah blah blah; ¬_¬…
- weizbox, on 04/20/2008, -1/+15perhaps... but that doesn't change the fact that Valve wants someone to 'Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform.'
source:http://www.valvesoftware.com/job-SenSoftEngineer.h ... - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+15I thought there was a native Linux client already.
- DeadPain, on 04/20/2008, -0/+14yay! You are right! I'm gonna go install photoshop natively on slackware right now... oh wait :(
- icechen1, on 04/20/2008, -5/+19It says "Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform.” in the URL , Awesome!!!
- cquinnd, on 04/20/2008, -2/+16Steam and Source go hand in hand. Steam provides them a great distribution model that fans will either love or hate. And Source provides a framwork that makes it easiser to port all the other games over on.
- twtmc, on 04/20/2008, -7/+21I posted that link about 6 months ago and it reached the front page. Digg likes to repeat itself it seems.
- Protoss, on 04/20/2008, -1/+14Yep, Valve has dedicated server clients for Linux, has for quite a while too.
- TheRealToma, on 04/20/2008, -2/+14I swear I saw this same Job Description about 6 months or more ago.
Here we go. Could it mean the position was never filled?
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/09/14/ ... - hornback, on 04/20/2008, -0/+11I don't know why you guys are digging this guy down. The URL here is the exact same as the one in the slashdot article, and there's no direct link to it on their jobs page. I think the is the same job posting from last september, and some idiot just reposted t hat in the ubuntu irc channel.
- Jalh, on 04/20/2008, -1/+12hiding the real IP ? maybe
- cigawoot, on 04/20/2008, -2/+13Linux is not Unix, fyi.
OS X is built on a Free BSD kernal, not a linux-based kernal. - AzureRise, on 04/20/2008, -2/+13Doubt it's true. That job listing's been there for a while. And as they pointed out, the guy had some random ip address from India and there's no official confirmation. If they port it, I'll buy it. I want a boxed version though. Steam takes up too many resources and you have to be logged in to play single player offline games.
- usingpond, on 04/20/2008, -1/+12Based on the remote possibility of an Orange Box port? Wow man get your priorities straight.
- Yeknom, on 04/20/2008, -4/+15Dude, TF2 pwns unreal tourney anyday
- therightclique, on 04/20/2008, -0/+10RTFA.. Read the f-ing description. there's a link to valve's website.
- mavownsyou, on 04/20/2008, -0/+10Apparently 15mB of ram is too much these days. Steam has made gigantic improvements over the early days. Its one of the best platforms out there. If you're any kind of gamer, you probably have 2gB or more of memory, 15mB isn't that bad considering my firefox is eating around 900mB right now.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 04/20/2008, -1/+11I agree. WINE is awesome but it can be a huge pain in the ass.
- bitterbug, on 04/20/2008, -0/+9Not only that, it would essentially put Valve squarely in the dominant position for a growing market.
I wonder if having the windows version would entitle someone to be able to install the Linux version. - CAPITALLETTERS, on 04/20/2008, -0/+9Not everyone has $25000 to spend on a computer.
- NebCanuck, on 04/20/2008, -2/+11Nice Far Side reference!
http://www.bakbone.com/newsletter/images/ginger_la ... - inactive, on 04/20/2008, -0/+9EPIC fail
- blipblopblip, on 04/20/2008, -0/+8$ ./winetricks gecko
$ regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/
New Key "Direct3D"
new string OffScreenRenderingMode set to "backbuffer"
new string UseGLSL set to "disabled"
new string VideoMemorySize set to "256" or whatever your graphics card RAM is.
Exit regedit
run steam using:
$ WINEDEBUG=-all wine Steam.exe
Right click on the source game you want to play in the steam games list
enter the following startup commands:
-width 1280 -height 1024 -dxlevel 90
now run winecfg (while steam is open) and set the windows version to Windows 98
Now start the game and enjoy. It should work perfectly.
When you exit steam, run winecfg again and set it to Windows 2000. The games prefer win98 and steam prefers 2k.
ENJOY! - Infidelcastr0, on 04/20/2008, -8/+16*Ponders giving linux another try.
- Frostek, on 04/20/2008, -2/+10If this is true, then they've got my money! Orange Box on Linux would be a dream come true.
Valve, the cash is waiting. Please give me a reason to start giving you more. :-) - Sabretou, on 04/20/2008, -1/+9All of the UT games have been available for the PC, Mac and Linux right since release day. :p
- bjornski, on 04/20/2008, -0/+8Neat
- erkokite, on 04/20/2008, -0/+8Epic has a history of porting their games to Linux. UT has always had a linux port, so it wouldn't come as a surprise. For Valve, this will be a first.
