- ptFoe, on 02/05/2009, -10/+103Wow that is really great of HP, you can see the polish of a product when it is created by a corporation than some geek in a basement.
The Gnome foundation needs a good kick up the rear end. - motang, on 02/04/2009, -3/+66Awesome, that is a very good interface and I am glad HP released it.
- TaylorHelferty, on 02/05/2009, -3/+51I agree that corporate-made designs and interfaces tend to look better, and Gnome (while I enjoy it) could use a good makeover. But "geek in a basement"? Really? That's quite the generalization. I'm not digging you down, just saying.
- ptFoe, on 02/05/2009, -0/+44The have used Elisa media center, which deserves credit
http://elisa.fluendo.com/ - chamberlanderic, on 02/05/2009, -1/+34looks like a cell phone interface
- JudgeDredd, on 02/05/2009, -0/+30Mark Shuttleworth and Canonical is some geek in a basement?
- ikkefc3, on 02/05/2009, -0/+24HP did not make MediaStyle. They rebranded Elisa Mediacenter (elisa.fluendo.com).
- gobbo, on 02/05/2009, -0/+18I have several novice users who want their computers to be web-email-music appliances. I have them on Ubuntu so that I don't have to fix their computers unless the hardware fails. I think this is just the interface that someone like that needs, so I'd like to know if anyone is able to get a generic desktop version of this running.
- ethamajin, on 02/05/2009, -1/+18Which could be very appealing to mainstream users. Good on HP.
- colonelxc, on 02/05/2009, -1/+18Yeah, for starters, I'm upstairs.
- node3, on 02/05/2009, -1/+17Specifically, the shade is Mojave Orange.
I.e., brown but under a different name. - MCA2142, on 02/05/2009, -3/+18Can't wait for this. If there is one thing I don't like about ubuntu, it's the look of the default theme.
Brown. - DangerCollie, on 02/05/2009, -2/+16Hey, those guys have done a really fantastic job of supplying a super interface to the world for FREE. So, it's okay to offer constructive criticism, but your comment is out of line. Show a little respect.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+138 min video walkthrough of the OS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqkMNReGaJs - Dohko_Xar, on 02/05/2009, -0/+12Now lets install this on my eee pc!
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -3/+15"you can see the polish of a product when it is created by a corporation than some geek in a basement."
Wait, that's not fair. Linux is in the place that it is today thanks to those "nerds in the basement" that you're talking about. AND most of those "nerds" aren't even paid for the AMAZING work they've done all this years so ***** you. If anything this MI interface is a demonstration of how cool is when a company has the ability to customize your OS of choice the way they want to. - gigatwo, on 02/05/2009, -0/+11Well, generally if it is actually a "little" game, then they'd probably just double click on the exe, and WINE would take care of the rest. Obviously, it's not guaranteed to work, but I think the point is that they don't use it for anything that really requires windows.
- michif72, on 02/05/2009, -0/+11I was just going to ask about details of your operation systems. thanks.
- mrsteveman1, on 02/05/2009, -0/+10Agreed, this is how Linux truly succeeds in the netbook or desktop space. Polished user interfaces are what sell users on devices like this, and until recently there weren't any.
It isn't clear from the article if HP plans to freely license this stuff, but i don't think they need to. - Vadi0, on 02/05/2009, -0/+10I'm impressed. This looks better than Dell's remix even.
- Vadi0, on 02/05/2009, -4/+13Brown was in 6.06 which was 2 years ago.
If you try any new versions, they're actually orange. - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -1/+10I am down in the basement with your mum.
- solarwind24, on 02/05/2009, -2/+11QFT, man! And HP didn't spend millions of dollars on this like microsoft does on windows. Look what a little corporate intervention can do! We need more of this!
- MCA2142, on 02/05/2009, -2/+11I know that it's easy to change themes. I am currently running a Mac_Lin theme on my box.
What I was commenting though, was about the default theme itself. No matter if I can change it or not, The default theme is ugly.
The default theme for any OS should be pleasing to look at. - NunoPCruz, on 02/04/2009, -3/+12I'm definitely going to try this out!
- MavRevMatt, on 02/05/2009, -0/+8If you don't like HP's ink prices, don't use an HP printer. Obviously other printers have "reasonably priced ink".
- charlie55, on 02/05/2009, -0/+8anyone running this on an aspire one?
- JudgeDredd, on 02/05/2009, -1/+9Yeah, I know that. The OS in question is based on Ubuntu.
- mynameistux, on 02/05/2009, -0/+8making Linux easier to use, but not taking away the option for advanced users to go all, advanced = win
- Ravatar, on 02/05/2009, -0/+8I'm sure HP (and their legions of attorneys) knows the licensing situation a little more than Joe Digger.
- BenKenobi88, on 02/05/2009, -0/+7This is a job for a spelling nazi, silly. Looks like you need one too, mister grammAr nazi.
- strangeman, on 02/05/2009, -0/+7Man.. you gotta try shiki colors! That's the best dark theme I've ever tried ;) Here's a screen using shiki-colors blue with the standard human icon set:
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/3451/screenna9. ...
You can get that theme at gnome-look - davidrools, on 02/05/2009, -1/+8Thanks, HP for making this available for download (soon). I'd like to try this out and see how it compares to XP/7/regular Unbuntu Netbook remix
- StandardsDT, on 02/05/2009, -0/+7This looks very similar to their HP Touch interface, well at least to me it does.
- mrBitch, on 02/05/2009, -0/+6@ dusanmal RE: "HP construct does not allow you to add software of your choice compatible with its Linux kernel."
You're wrong, it's just the HP front end that does not supply additional options.
HP is NOT blocking you from installing anything else you want to install via the usual apt-get terminal commands.
from the comments section FTA :
"I have had a HP Mini 1000 mi since Monday and I must say I am rather impressed with this UI (I am writing this on it right now). I have been a linux user for many years, but this takes the ease of ubuntu up to a whole new level. I still find myself turning to the terminal fairly often (the apt-get front end that comes with MIE is limited to HP approved applications)." - smacksaw, on 02/05/2009, -0/+6South Africa is the world's basement. Russia is the attic.
- bean48009, on 02/05/2009, -0/+6As a hater of HP, I must say they did a great job on this customization...I hope more people start realizing that Windows in just a black hole conglomerate and the open source market is by far the safest and cheapest...
- DennisIsAwesome, on 02/05/2009, -0/+5bad ass
- raldz, on 02/05/2009, -1/+6i'll buy it if it is color brown..
- mynameistux, on 02/05/2009, -1/+5I like brown
I think most people dislike it, but I reckon its awesome. - MCA2142, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4yeah, it's now better.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4There was a complaint that HP has locked the programs that you can access with add/remove, but personally I think it could be a good thing. They have supposed to have selected the best programs to run on their devices, just so people don't install the wrong application, say a KDE program or something I guess.
- adderx99, on 02/05/2009, -1/+5hmm, i hope they add root access on their mi netbooks soon...HP you know better than that...
- MadHarvey, on 02/05/2009, -1/+5The average consumer doesn't go through six printers in 3 years. And even if they did, every ***** device should come with the necessary cables. I don't care how many cables I accumulate.
The big chains put pressure on companies to not include cables, so that they can sell them at ridiculous markups. - strangeman, on 02/05/2009, -3/+7You are really out of line.. and you have no clue, either. In fast they ARE using Gnome. And that mediacenter as someone else pointed out is another oss project. They ONLY thing they did is hire some designers and make a nice Gnome theme. Well, a little more than just a theme, but still.
Oh.. and matter of fact.. all big OSS programs are developed in corporations or at least supported by them. - Lane, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4if this boots up in a reasonable amount of time I'm sold
- Gibletoid, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4Actually current reviews show Canon has the best print quality in an ink based printer.
Must be due to their inferior ink and lower prices. - talonstriker, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4Learn to find the difference between typos and grammar mistakes.
- mrBitch, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3If you want to try it out NOW, you can :
1. Add the HP repositories :
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1021351
2. Using Synaptic package manager, install a package called glassy-bleu-theme. - Vadi0, on 02/05/2009, -0/+3I think you failed to read the comments where they just rebranded Elisa. Take a look at that program - it's open-source, and is backed my a commercial company (Fluendo).
So, nub ownt. -
