- nograz, on 10/12/2007, -15/+52I understand GIMP is not perfect, but for what GIMP does it simply is amazing. Oh yeah, it is also free, something that Photoshop can't touch.
GIMP is more than adequit for basic and intermediate graphic editing. It has come a long way and like I said, it is a amazing peice of software for what it is. - picturesnstuff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35@salmonmoose - "Going by Linux applications it's also safe to say, that none of them have enough artistic flair to warrant Adobe's time."
Go to any visual effects house in the world and 90% of their machines are running Linux.
Shake
Maya
Renderman
Houdini
Nuke
Softimage
and so on...
Adobe not having Photoshop on Linux is an immense annoyance to us since it means we either have to dual boot or deploy additional computers just so that our artists can modify an image. - siMac, on 10/12/2007, -15/+41"You bought Photoshop but you can't afford Windows?"
Yeah, because the only reason for not using Windows is the cost. - wusch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17if you're a linux fan you won't care about other distributions, instead you'll be happy, that linux is growing in popularity with ubuntu. You really miss the point in Ubuntu. Ubuntu's slogan is "Linux for Human" and that is, what ubuntu needs. If you are that great, that you can compile the kernel yourself you won't need a distribution. But for beginners ubuntu is great: installation is easy and for everything there is just one program and not ten of them like in some other distributions. I know there are big problems with ubuntu (like codec install ...) but you have to consider, that every new user to linux is a guy, who only knows how to move the mouse - if they know how to install windows they're like professionals ;D Most of them come with no knowledge and Ubuntu is easy to install and easy to use. Opensuse is easy to install to, but I think it's not that easy to use.
I like for instance, that there are more ubuntu versions with different DEs and not one, where the installation is asking, which you want to have - is there any windows user, who never did more than klicking in internet explorer some icons that knows, what Gnome and KDE is and which is better (or: fits his needs).
If you're a "pro" you can use whatever you want, you know what you can do with the terminal and you can edit all settings by hands. But if I don't want to edit every little config file in /etc/ I'd better use a distribution like ubuntu or opensuse. Linux is heavily pushed by Ubuntu and that is - as a matter of fact - just a great thing. Linux for Desktop Computers! - biffta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Because Ubunutu is actually attempting to take on Microsoft in the desktop arena and I think a lot of people support this cause.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Pixar uses MACOSX.... Industrial Light & Magic use MACOSX...... Most Visual Effect houses use MACOSX, not Linux. "
Actually, if you walk through, you'll find at least as many Linux boxes as you will Mac OS X boxes. Sometimes you'll even see Final Cut Pro running next to someone editing on CinePaint. And then there are the render servers to take into account...
The one thing you see less and less of these days is Windows boxes, simply because a) Macs can boot Windows for that occasional stubborn application and b) Windows costs a lot of money, on top of what you've already paid for everything else. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"...these instructions are pretty ubuntu centric..."
Yes....and replace the 3 "apt-get" lines with "emerge" and now the instructions are Gentoo centric. - chiklit, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Because Ubuntu's the most popular at the moment?
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I couldn't agree more.
There are many fine Linux distro's out there, some better than Ubuntu for the things people taut Ubuntu for being great for.
Ubuntu is just really good at branding itself
- Happy OpenSUSE user - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13OK, NOW we Linux users are interested in pirated software!
Joke! I KID! I KID the content-creation monopoly....
Seriously, i have a prediction: Adobe will find out about this and rush to disable it. Countdown begins. - ColonelKilkenny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9No, it does not have all features of Photoshop.
It's good but not Photoshop. - rende, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10typical gentoo user comment.
"If you know two ***** about Linux, you'd be able to see through the hype and realize that it's not about being "trendy", but more about what suits YOUR personal needs."
exactly, but ubuntu fits more people.. not everyone wants to compile everything from source. - rende, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yes people should try as many different distros as they can, even some more difficult ones such as gentoo or even lfs/bsd.. if they want. it helps to understand how the system fits together, how to fix it if something breaks. and it makes you appreciate ubuntu more
the widespread usage and marketing of ubuntu is what linux and opensource as a whole sorely lacked for a long time. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Yes....and replace the 3 "apt-get" lines with "emerge" and now the instructions are Gentoo centric."
And they take an hour longer to process! - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@innate
CMYK support is in GIMP... download 2.3.x and shut up. - size13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Uh, I counted seven steps there.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14"Its safe to say that linux holds a larger user base than Mac now."
Going by Linux applications it's also safe to say, that none of them have enough artistic flair to warrant Adobe's time. Mac has traditionally been the platform for artists, because they don't want to faf around with the complexities of Windows or 'only 10 step' installs of Linux. So whilst there are fewer Mac users out there perhaps, there are far more who are going to buy Photoshop. - Skyhook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Except that it's Ubuntu, which has no root shell enabled by default. Unless you've specifically added a password to root, sudo is the "Ubuntu Way" for what it's worth.
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess they left out these:
1) Download a bittorent client
2) Get a torrent...
3) Download away!
Because you know that a vast number of people reading the article will take those steps ;) - depi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone tried it? How well it works? Any crashes?
- plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9It lacks the "sudo" command for apt's.
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install wine
should be read
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install wine
or
# apt-get update
# apt-get install wine
Moreover, if you want to avoid the dark gray look, I suggest you read:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=55286
Note that similar method works for Macromedia's products. But hey, Gimp and Inkscape are good enought for me. - cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've tried a lot of distros, but I like Ubuntu the best. It also has better hardware detection.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6A gentoo user talking about trendiness, my whole world just flipped into a nice pancake shape.
- biffta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You should really post comments like this to the actual article so it will help the non diggers too!
- rende, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"It's just that Ubuntu is NOTHING incredibly special like they advertise. There is NOTHING that makes it *better* from FC5, SuSE, Gentoo, etc."
This is true, it doesnt have any ground breaking functionality you cant find elsewhere, however what does make it special is its huge userbase, and the rapid growth of that userbase. - pyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu RULEZ!!!
- lowridah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to wonder if one of the reasons Adobe doesn't support linux for PS is because it's not really feasable to require activation for linux products. Almost every Adobe product requires activation now.
The only product for linux they even support is Framemaker. - robuk24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ubuntu is on 1 CD and can be ordered for free delivery or downloaded. The Ubuntu forum is very friendly. The Hardware detection is better than other distros I have tried. Those are the reasons I really ENJOY using Ubuntu and choose it above others.
- keeperofkeys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I had the exact opposite thought: use this to point out to Adobe how easy it would be for them to get PS running on Linux
- innate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The GIMP documentation says: “GIMP does not currently support the CMYK model.” [1]
Last month one of the GIMP developers said: “Colormanagement is still unfinished and it's not considered to do anything useful yet. You are loooking at a rough prototype.” [2]
So they are working on it. In the past, some people have confused the CMYK color picker for CMYK support. Hopefully it is more robust in the 2.3.x development version you mentioned. I haven’t looked at it, since I don’t use GIMP on a regular basis.
Whatever. I personally don’t need CMYK support, but it’s one of the frequently-cited shortcomings vis-à-vis Photoshop.

[2] http://www.nabble.com/Color-management----softproof-comments-t2293390.html - plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Didn't want to post the "old news" comment, but this method is out for months and I'm pretty sure Adobe knows about it. But what can they do ? You just copy every file from an installed version, copy the registry entries. Your installed copy is supposed to be legit. If your installed copy is not registered on windows, neither will it be on Linux.
It just doesn't matter to them. What's the big deal ? More users can just buy there expensive software and run it on Linux to beat Gimp ? And they even do not have to port it to Linux, pay developpers for that and ensure support ? Good for them !
Running Photoshop on Linux has nothing to do with piracy. If you want it legit, you got it legit. If you want to pirate it, it's not running it on Linux that will simplify the process. - innate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7“All features” except CMYK support, plugin compatibility, PANTONE support…
- cuzican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i'm surprised that codeweavers has 4g's worth of pledges and ppl have tested it and found it doesn't work.. http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name?app_id=1288
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Ubuntu is for the Mandrake retards that can't even compile their own kernel."
You must be 15 years old and still at the stage when its "cool to tweak the OS". - sauvaget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the recode part doesn't work for me. any ideas how i can import the .reg file by other means?
i'm using crossover office btw - kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Theres really nothing that makes ubuntu better than other distros"
Well , to begin with , its based on debian, which makes it alot better than most distros, then everything from easy to set up, update, and maintain. But to be honest, all the hype should be about Kubuntu, seince Ubuntu is ugly2006 . - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Follow-up...
Unfortunately it doesn't work. :(
Given those instructions, on Dapper Drake, the recoding of the registry entries doesn't work. Many people are having this trouble besides me as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm having the same problem you guys are. Any way to get that recode to work properly? I tried rende's method but came up w/ the same results. I'm thinking the article-writer posted all that before he tried it out himself. Either that or is leaving out a step.
Marked as INACCURATE. - kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4" But I knew someone in ILM and I almost had a job at Pixar. "
Why didn't they hire you? Child labor laws? - sauvaget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2weird. i got photoshop 7 working easily enough though. good enough for me.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4or it lacks "su -". But I guess I'm the only one who ever uses that anymore.
- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This could actually be fixed just by a 'sudo terminal' before doing any of the commands. Then you could work through the article just as written.
- Hemingrubbish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i completly agree. :D
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually the notes are Debian-centric. They'll work on any Debian-based distro (which is what Ubuntu is).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it not feasible? Code weavers do that for Cross Over Office...
- rende, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there are commercial applications that are supported on linux. shake, xsi, maya, houdini. they do however say which distro (usually redhat) to simplify support
- plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2biffta : I did, but the comments on the blog need to be "approved" before showing up. Thank you for make me feel useful. :)
- rende, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1okay got it working.. finally. using wine 0.9.22 (latest).
Installation guide:
http://www.winehq.com/site/download-deb
To convert the .reg to a readable format I did this:
recode ucs-2-internal adobe.reg
and.. it takes ages to load. the welcome screen doesnt display correctly while its loading but give it about 5minutes before you give up. The message "not enough memory to begin activation" means you didnt do the regedit part right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, I agree! I was JUST looking for something like this the other day too. Digg rules.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gentoo is a joke.
